FOREWORD The monthly survey, on which this report is based, is undertaken cooperatively by the Department of Fisheries, the Quebec Bureau of Statistics and the Dominion Bureau of Statistics n Newfoundland, the data are collected by mail where possible; otherwise by telegraph and telephone n other provinces the mails are used except for firms failing to report on time n such cases, officers of the Regional Offices of the Dominion Bureau of Statistics and officers of the Quebec Bureau of Statistics make personal visits or telephone For those firms that fail to reply on time, an estimate based on the production and inventory of the plant for the previous month is included in the tabulation This estimate is revised on receipt of the questionnaire and included in the subsequent month's revised data Of the 295 plants in operation, 32 failed to report for the month of September Estimated freezings and stocks for these plants totalled 1,225,165 pounds and 1,708,560 pounds respectively ie data for Newfoundland are collected and compiled by the Department of 1HJerLes and for Quebec by the Quebec Bureau of Statistics Reports from all other provinces are collected and compiled by the Dominion Bureau of Statistics Every effort is made to include in the mailing list all firms producing quickfrozen fish products Also included are public and private cold storage plants holding significant quantities of frozen fish, ie, 30,000 pounds or more at any period in the year
