1 COLD STORAGE HOLDINGS OF FISH SEPTEMBER, 1957 Memorandum OF OCT \ popt c I L1 Published by Authority of The Honourable Gordon Churchill, Minister of Trade and Commerce DOMINION BUREAU OF STATISTICS Industry and Merchandising Division Fiaheries Section Price $2.00 a year Vol. 40, No.9 EDMOND CLOUTIZE, C.M.G., O,A., DSP.. Queen's Printer and Controller of Stationery, Ottawa, 1957.
2 Beginning with the February issue of this publication, our coverage of establishments freezing fish and storing frozen fishery products was revised. This was a result of a survey made in 1955 on the Cold Storage Facilities for fish and of a subsequent analysis of special reports obtained in A number of establishments storing small amounts of fish were eliminated from our reporting list, whenever the amounts involved from month to month did not significantly alter the provincial or regional picture. On the other hand some establishments not previously reporting were added, resulting in a net increase in the number incorporated into this report. Figures of stocks in this publication (Table 1) refer to the same establishments in both years and are therefore comparable. Reference to figures previously published for 1956 will indicate that our volume coverage was increased. We attempt to cover approximately ninetyeight per cent of the Canadian totals and about ninetyfive per cent or more within each province or area. Cumulative freezings (Table 2) are not strictly comparable, because the January figures incorporated into the totals could not be revised for EXPLANATION OF SYMBOLS Nil (X) Less than three firms reporting this item. The figures, therefore, cannot be shown separately, but are included under Unclassified.tt
3 COLD STORAGE HOLDINGS OF FISH SEPTEMBER 30, 1957 The total reported stocks of frozen fish were 73.9 million pounds at the end of September, a decline of 16 per cent compared with Bait, Pacific salmon and halibut were the main items contributing to the decline. Smaller amounts of groundfish fillets were also held at the end of the month than in The freezings of fishery products dropped by 18 per cent compared with September of the preceding year and the cumulative freezings for the period JanuarySeptember were somewhat smaller this year than in However, larger quantities of frozen groundfish fillets were frozen this year than last. FreshFrozen Sea Fish The stocks of freshfrozen sea fish fell by 14 per cent to 47.8 million pounds from 55.6 million in Those of groundfish fillets (including blocks) declined by 7 per cent to 22.5 million pounds from 24.3 million a year ago. The stocks of Pacific salmon and of halibut dressed were also 28 per cent less than those of a year ago. The holdings of freshfrozen sea fish declined substantially in the provinces of Newfoundland, Quebec and British Columbia and this was only partially offset by an increase in the Maritime Provinces. Freshwater Species, Smoked Fish and Bait The stocks of the freshwater species were virtually unchanged compared with those of the previous month or of the same month in Those of smoked products increased by 22 per cent to 3.1 million pounds from 2.6 million in the preceding year, the smoked cod fillets and finnan haddies being the two products held in larger amounts. Most significant was the drop in bait holdings by 39 per cent to 8.5 million pounds from 14.1 million in Freezings of Fish The freezings of fish in September were reported at 22.7 million pounds, a decline of 18 per cent compared with the same month of The most significant change applied to bait which fell to 3.7 million pounds from 8.7 million a year ago. The freezings of Pacific salmon and halibut also declined substantially. This was only partially offset by increased freezings of groundfish fillets by 1.3 million pounds, from 11.4 million a year ago. Cumulative freezings for the first nine months of the year, at million pounds, were slightly less than for the previous year. However, the groundfish fillets (including blocks) were reported at million pounds for the first nine months, against million in This report is compiled from schedules submitted by 274 firinshowevet, 7 of the establishments on our list have failed to report on time for September 1957.
