Last year, I found an importer and this year, I was able to establish good connections by targeting the hotels and restaurant buyers, thereby further expanding my business. Mr Anthony Budd Managing Director of Diverse Flavours, South Africa I have visited many food shows in Japan and my company chose Wine & Gourmet JAPAN as the first show we exhibit with in Japan. Our re-packaged, re-sized products created for the Japanese markets have been very well received. Ms Maria Santovito Marketing Representative of Dolceamaro SRL, Italy We met representatives from whisky bars, hotels, buyers from Yokohama, and even an owner of a restaurant chain in Thailand. Mr Rafael Ray Cardenas CEO of Hand Crafted Spirits, USA We participated in Wine & Gourmet JAPAN 2013. There was an excellent service provided, a very good planning of the exhibition, and the visitors were all professionals who were interested in our wines. Given that during the expo we found our first importer in Japan, it is for sure that we will take part again next year, this time to support his network of clients! Mr Thomas Glinavos Managing Director of Domain Glinavos, Greece We participated in Wine & Gourmet JAPAN 2012 and returned again this year. As a producer of organic wines, vinegar, grape seed oil, and grape seed flour from the region of La Mancha in Spain, we would like to reach out to Japanese buyers to establish a presence in Asia. Many of our Asian customers came to Wine & Gourmet JAPAN 2013 on the first event day and we also managed to establish several new contacts. Mr Eric Alcolea Sales Manager of EHD Delgado Organics, Spain We have had a presence in Japan for more than 20 years and last year we started to promote the pairing of our cheese with wines. Why Japan Market Trends & Outlook Strong Growth in Japan s Wine and Spirits Market to Continue Japan s wine and spirits market registered strong growth for two consecutive years, and will continue to grow. Wine consumption increased by at least 15-16% in 2012. With a relatively low per capita consumption, Japan has enormous potential for expansion in 2013 and beyond. Increased off-premise consumption and consumption in inexpensive restaurants, such as izakayas, has contributed to the growth of imported volume. Total bottled import volumes from Spain increased by 15%; Italy by 13.6%; Chile by 13.3%; France by 7%; and United States by 6.4%. Sparkling wine remains popular among men and women. The total consumption volume in 2012 grew by 15.8%. Liqueurs and spirits continue to be a favourite among women for their sweet taste, lower alcohol content, and visual appearance. Opportunities in Japan s Food Service and Private Label Sectors The Japanese enjoy dining out and demand high-quality food and service, indicating a strong and positive willingness to spend. The consumer food industry is estimated to be worth $292 billion, with the restaurant industry accounting for $214 billion. This sector offers unique opportunities, with major chain restaurants playing an important role. Bespoke and private brands able to tailor portion size, packaging, labels and even flavours to the needs of top retailers are increasingly popular now, allowing for exponential growth in the sector.
