Windbreaks Common three row windbreak layout Design Slowing the wind, controlling the snow drift and creating a visual barrier can all be done with the correctly designed plantings. In agriculture, trees around livestock facilities can have a great impact on the operation and can even help in reducing odor. For an effective windbreak we like to plant the inside row no closer than 75 feet away from the area you wish to protect to ensure snow has room to drift on the ground (not on your roof or driveway). 50-100 ft 50-100 ft House Shade trees = Techny Arborvitaes at 9 ft. spacing within the row = Black Hills Spruce at 22 ft. spacing within the row = Norway Spruce at 22 ft. spacing within the row N We have helped many home owners and farmers through the process of designing and planting windbreaks.
