Monthly Report for April 2011 Japan arthquake Disaster On March 11, 2011 a 9.0 magnitude earthquake hit northern Japan, followed quickly thereafter by a deadly tsunami. It s believed that over 20,000 people perished in the disaster. As a result, industrial production fell by approximately 15% in April. The damaged nuclear plant problem continues to be a challenge, though almost all radioactive emissions appear to be contained. Life in major urban areas such as Tokyo has returned to normal though in Northern Japan many thousands of people are still in evacuation shelters. Imported food products do not appear to have any problems entering Japan though some ports in Northern Japan were damaged. I. Activities for April 2011 1.
