The leaf unfurls as the flower blooms. Each flower stalk produces only one flower with numerous stamens. The common name comes from the fact that the plant exudes a bright redorange sap when cut. Trillium grandiflorum wood lily This simple, graceful perennial is one of the most beloved of the spring woodland flowers. Leaves, petals and sepals all come in groups of three. The flowers have flaring, ovate, wavy edges white petals subtended by three smaller green sepals. With age, flowers acquire pink tones with age and give way to berry-like capsules. 8
