Pruning Your New Apple Tree Pruning Basics You can prune your tree anytime from February up until blooming time. However, it is better to prune earlier, when the tree is still dormant. Pruning should consist of keeping the center of the tree free of growth, removing all diseased or weak branches and removing all branches that rub together. Remove sucker shoots from tree branches and trunk base every year. Remember that your tree will bear fruit on its previous years growth. ONE YEAR OLD TREE Plant your new tree in an area with good drainage. Of you can, pick a spot that is a little sheltered, possibly close to your house. Water periodically if the season is dry. TWO YEAR OLD TREE The highlighted portion should not be pruned. The black colored lines should be pruned by one-third. Cut just above an outward facing bud. THREE YEAR OLD TREE Pruning is very similar to a two year tree. The black colored side shoots (last years growth) should be pruned by a third. Prune to just above an outward facing bud. FOUR YEAR OLD TREE Last years growth (black lines) should be pruned back by a third. After the fourth year the basic shape of the tree will have been established. 21
