8/16/2015 Heavenly Scent's July Newsletter INSPIRATIONS Heavenly Scent Herb Farm's July Newsletter INSPIRATIONS Dear Kathy, https://ui.constantcontact.com/visualeditor/visual_editor_preview.jsp?agent.uid=1121464431985&format=html&printframe=true 1/7
July is the month when summer is in full swing. Days are long and lazy; nights are full of star light, lightning bugs and fireworks. We allow ourselves to be kids again with bike rides and swimming, ice cream cones and push up pops. We relax a bit more, indulging ourselves with outdoor parties and trips to the lake. Summertime can be truly magical and we can help add some magical qualities to your world. Grab your best friend or favorite family member and sign up to attend one of our upcoming Outdoor Garden Tea Parties. Nothing can compare to dining under the gazebo, surrounded by Swan hydrangeas, giant ferns, and happy songs of the birds. Steve's doing the cooking so you know it'll be a taste sensation! New and Exciting in the Shoppe Visit our shoppe and you will find it newly refreshed. The front room now features items that will remind you of a visit to the lake a vintage window from an old boathouse, a fishing themed lamp, Log Cabin fragrance, and metal letters that spell out "lake." Refresh your own space with an antique looking birdbath, statue, or pedestal from our new line of cement products! Created from crushed quartz, washed sand, and Portland cement, these reproductions will stand up to Michigan's harsh weather conditions. The old world look is sure to add a bit of grace and elegance to your garden space or home. It's bug season! Stop in for some of the all natural insect repellant spray we are now carrying. Locally made, there are two formulas available: Gardener's Friend, good for use on all folks, and Jungle Defense, designed to deter ticks (but not suitable for use on very young folks). We like both formulas to keep us bug bite free! https://ui.constantcontact.com/visualeditor/visual_editor_preview.jsp?agent.uid=1121464431985&format=html&printframe=true 2/7
Greenhouse Gossip It's time for Steve's annual "Gone Fishing" plant sale. Most of our plants are buy 5 get 5 free (excluding ivies, ferns, and hydrangeas). Punch up your home's curb appeal with a bunch of new annuals or, why not try something you've never grown before? Speaking of trying something new, did you know there are many different varieties of thyme plants? Some grow upright like Silver Edged thyme, and some are low creepers, perfect for planting in between pavers such as Elfin or Wooly thyme. Many of our thyme plants are better suited for culinary purposes such as Orange Spice, Doone Valley, a lemon thyme that is great for fish, and French thyme, which is supposed to be THE BEST thyme for cooking. Come and check out these interesting varieties. Kitchen Pantry Summertime is perfect for salads; dress yours with something tasty from the Lesley Elizabeth line of oils. Delicious flavors such as Basil and Garlic Oil, Roasted Garlic Oil, and Garlic and Rosemary Oil (Did we mention that we really like garlic?) will leave your taste buds feeling happy without making your tummy feel full. Bonus: Lesley Elizabeth is a Michigan company based in Lapeer! Ice box pickles are a great way to preserve your cucumbers and https://ui.constantcontact.com/visualeditor/visual_editor_preview.jsp?agent.uid=1121464431985&format=html&printframe=true 3/7
they've never been easier to do when you use the pre mixed spices from another Michigan company, Country Home Creations, based in Goodrich. With their easy recipe you can even preserve your peppers, tiny onions, and zucchini just in time for picnic season! Here's a tasty summer salad recipe for you: Top fresh, mixed greens (spinach, water cress, arugula, and kale) with shaved, aged parmesan cheese, fresh blackberries, and toasted almonds that have been drizzled with a touch of olive oil, honey, and a dusting of finely ground black pepper. Gently toss everything with our Earth and Vine Blackberry Balsamic Vinaigrette. If you want a hardy salad add grilled chicken or salmon. Kid's Corner Go into the woods with your young people and scout out interesting additions to the fairy garden (remember to apply bug spray). How about some acorn tops to challenge their creative minds? What can they make with the interestingly shaped twigs they find? Better yet, bring home a small, unique stump to use as the foundation of a whimsical fairy garden. Surround the top of the stump with a wee fence. Plant some tiny succulents in the crevices. Add one of our adorable fairy tents and a hammock and, just like magic, you have an instant fairy campground! https://ui.constantcontact.com/visualeditor/visual_editor_preview.jsp?agent.uid=1121464431985&format=html&printframe=true 4/7
8/16/2015 Heavenly Scent's July Newsletter INSPIRATIONS Did You Know? Before we were Heavenly Scent Herb Farm, this was a dairy farm with over 80 cows. That's a lot of manure! The business is housed in a barn that is over 100 years old. This is the only place owner, Steve Mathews has ever lived. Heavenly Scent is the result of a hobby gone wild! Owner, Kathy Mathews was a physical education teacher who, after the birth of their first son, decided not to teach. More comfortable with lots to do, Kathy was antsy as a stay at home mom so she accepted work with a caterer who grew five of her own herbs. Kathy planted these same five herbs in her yard and used the excess, along with flowers, to create dried floral arrangements. This meant that she needed a place to sell her dried flowers and arrangements and thus began Heavenly Scent Herb Farm named after the heavenly smell of the scented geraniums Kathy was growing. As their business grew, Kathy and Steve converted more and more of the barn. Now, the once humble barn, smells of herbs, candles, and bath products and you will only find hay in a few of the displays. Be careful what you wish for! Amusements and Diversions Don't miss out on the fun!
