KUWAIT A. MARKET FOR FRESH FRUITS AND FRESH VEGETABLES 1. Market Trend and Opportunities: Fresh Fruits The market for fresh fruits in Kuwait has a downward trend. Bananas import volume decreased by 34% and value by 74% during the period 2001 to 2006. Kuwait imported about 15.6 thousand tons of bananas amounting to US$ 2.66 million in 2006. This shows a substantial decrease as compared to import figures of US$10.4 million of 23.6 thousand tons in 2001. In 2006 major imports were made from Philippines with 85.3% of total imports. Among the various fruits import and consumption of pineapples are increasing dramatically. Total quantity of pineapples imported during the period had increased by115% but the value has decreased by 20%. This shows that the price per unit of pineapples decreased slightly. In 2006 quantity imported recorded at 2,054 tons with value of 0.60 million. The major imports were made from Thailand with 49.4%, Philippines 35.4% and Malaysia 6.4%. Likewise imported quantity of mangoes increased by70% whereas the value imported for mango has decreased by 21%. Likewise the import of mango was 8,900 tons and the value imported was 6.07 million. India was the major exporter of mangoes to Kuwait with 92.7% share in the total imports. Similarly there is a decreasing trend for other fresh fruits products like grapes and lychee. India shared 37.6% of import market in Kuwait. Market Trend and Opportunities: Fresh Vegetables The quantity imported for tomato in the year 2001 was 54,484 tons which had increased to 82,468 tons in the year 2006, a hike of 51% in quantity and the corresponding hike in the value was 27%. This indicated that although there is an increment of quantity imported but however
the price per unit has decreased. The import of tomato amounted to 21.36 million in 2006. The major imports were made from Jordan (59.1%). Imports of onions and green chillies had decreased. India accounted for majority of the imports for onions.
