Tuna Trade Fatima Ferdouse
HIGHLIGHTS East Asia is the world s largest processing and exporting region for canned tuna. Producing countries in the region also depend on imported raw materials The fluctuating raw material prices in 2017 affected exports from Thailand. But canned tuna sales increased from the Philippine, Indonesia and China. The regional markets in Asia/Pacific also import more than 150 000 tonnes of canned tuna annually. Among the developed marketsimports increased in Japan but Australia and New Zealand seemed to have reached the saturation points. In southeast Asia, demand for conventional canned tuna remained price sensitive. even through overall consumer demand for high value seafood has been growing in the regional markets. The question would be : how to make processed tuna a part of this high value seafood sales in Asia!

--------------------ASIA/PACIFIC CANNED TUNA MARKETS In southeast Asian markets, demand for conventional canned tuna remains price sensitive However, the general demand and import trends for seafood such as salmon, cod, shrimp, lobster etc. maintained positive trends So how to make canned or processed tuna a part of this high value seafood? How make it attractive to consumers!
The facts. The seafood markets in Asia is not price sensitive Canned tuna does not seem to be a popular choice to most of the Asian consumers!
Compared with other popular seafood such as shrimp, lobster, imported salmon etc., canned tuna is not an expensive seafood. Now a days, Australia and Canada sell more lobsters to Asian markets. Norwegian exports of salmon also continue to rise to Asian markets. Then why the demand for canned tuna has been relatively flat!
To sell more. -the canned tuna products need to be high quality with attractive packaging -good taste which should highlight the health benefit factors - carry sustainability assurance (MSC/WWF/ Pole and Line ) - High price? Why not!! After all many Asian consumer are willing to spend more on healthy
Canned tuna is added in Thai Air Asia s on board meals.
Newly introduced Value added Products for in the Philippines for Asian Markets
Possibly its time to launch more high value products for Asian consumers.. Something similar to what Chicken of the Sea has launched this year in the US market!
