Notes Matured in: Refill ex-sherry hogsheads and first fill ex-sherry butts. Colour: Pale gold GLENBURGIE 10YR OLD 40% Alc/Vol; Speyside Nose: Very subtle aromas. Starts with floral notes but quite quickly the sherry influence shows up, giving sherried sultanas and dried fruits. Tannic oak notes are strong. Taste: First, the palate is very floral and lightly earthy. Sherry starts to take over, bringing red fruits and berries. Drops of water add wee spices and sulphury notes. Finish: Nicely herbal and spicy with touch of sherry and fruits. Bit grassy. Delicate, fruity and earthy, medium length. Balance: Quite sophisticated, some earthy notes step up from time to time. And of course the smooth sherry influence is evident, especially if you let it rest in the glass. Gets better the more you give some time and thought to this Glenburgie.
BENROMACH 10YR OLD 43% Alc/Vol; Speyside WESTLAND AMERICAN OAK 46% Alc/Vol; Washington State Matured in: 80% ex-bourbon and 20% ex-sherry casks with one year finish in ex-sherry oloroso casks Colour: Golden amber Nose: Oranges and hints of sherry. A few drops of water gives orange marmalade, red grapefruit and hints of marzipan. Drops of water also make the sherry notes stronger. Like sherry punch with lots of ripe red fruits. Taste: Orange peel and bitter fruits and berries. Malty cereal starts to show when you let it rest in the glass. Drops of water make it mellow and juicy, yet with a crispy bitter aftertaste. Very sweet and tasty water melon mixed with stingy grapefruit and sherry. Finish: Quite warming with bitter berries, oak and hints of spices. Good malty aftertaste, yet some prefer it to be longer. Balance: Exciting and fresh, not in best balance though. But very vibrant. And did I say exciting? A flagship malt is the core expression of a distillery s house style. Westland s American Oak is a reflection of where it is made and the collective intent of those who made it. When Westland Distillery was founded, they had a vision for an entirely new category of whiskey. Distilled from the rich, flavorful barley of Washington State and matured predominantly in new American oak casks in the steady, cool humidity of their seaside home, this whiskey is a testament to that vision. All of these choices and ingredients conspire to create an approachable, mature and uniquely American single malt that can stand with the best whiskies in the world. Flavor Profile Notes The initial nose provides lemon and orange custard backed by freshly produced waffle cone. Shortly after, a rich creaminess emerges with creme brulee and chocolate custard while a hint of jasmine hides just beneath the surface. The first sip confirms the creamy and rich fruit custard notes of the nose, adding an element of rainier cherries. After five minutes, melting swiss chocolate is revealed with a hint of almond. Extended tastings brings out bananas and cream with Turkish coffee.
