Pictures of the week Thousands of seedlings popping up in the greenhouse! These sungold tomatoes are to be planted in our hoophouse, but we have many more tomatoes, pepppers, eggplant, flowers, and basil seedlings germinating for the plant sales. We d hoped to have plants ready to sell at the end of March since many people like to plant on Good Friday. However, flu hit us hard and for a week we were just doing what we could to take care of each other and Tulsi. Thankfully, she only got a touch of it- low fever and fussy for about 24 hours. Antibodies in breastmilk are truly amazing!!
A new variety of basil is popping up on the heat mats. For the past two years, we ve lost our basil crop to a newer disease that is devastating basil across the country: downy mildew. There is no organic spray that controls this nasty fungus. This year, we are growing DM resistant varieties and will be planting them more often in case they also succumb to this terrible disease. The spores float in on the air, so you don t have to grow a lot of basil to be affected. We will also be selling these resistant varieties if you want to ensure your home crop isn t affected.
Some varieties of peppers that I seeded for the plant sale. We grow things you won t find at larger nurseries, like these gorgeous and prolific purple bell peppers; heirloom and super sweet Corno di Toro frying peppers; Variegated African American heirloom hot Fish peppers; and the popular Japanese appetizer pepper Shishito. We ll also have your standard bell peppers, sweet banana peppers, jalapenos, etc.
Shannon has been instrumental in helping keep us caught up while no apprentices were here. In case you don t know Shannon, she runs our On Farm Market on Wednesdays and she s also a chef that caters farm to table exclusively. Our two new apprentices, Keith and Aziza, started this week, but two weeks ago when I didn t have anyone to help harvest for market, Shannon saved the day and harvested all morning. She s also been helping keep Tulsi while I get farm work done. We weren t sure how we d farm with a baby and this woman is one reason we re getting it done! Of course, my parents keep Tulsi much of the time, but it s so nice to have another person to count on for baby duty. Last week, when Chris and I were both sick, I was also sick with the feeling that everyday I was getting more and more behind with seeding for the plant sales. Shannon came and seeded almost 1000 flower seedlings for me. Zinnias, sunflowers, celosia, amaranth, nasturtium, and many more varieties are now popping up and will be ready to sell in April thanks to her good work.
Take good care, Jenny, Chris and Tulsi :)
