Terrace Restaurant A Little History Skotel lies in the heart of the Tongariro National Park, in Whakapapa Village at the base of Mt Ruapehu. 1142m above sea level. Here the air is clear, the water clean, the views spectacular, and the hospitality warm. The first buildings of the Skotel were erected in 1964 by a group of mountain enthusiasts who saw an opportunity to provide, for themselves and others, a more comfortable style of budget accommodation than was available in the mountain huts of the time. Over the following years demand from the travelling public for quality increased and it was apparent that a restaurant, bar and ensuite room were needed. After several years negotiation with the park board money was raised and the extensions constructed and opened in June 1986. Four years later it was bought by the present owners who have gradually built up the business. The two years of eruptions in 1995 and 1996 and the no-snow year of 1998, were a severe set-back to the finances of the operation, but over the following five years there was a steady expansion of summer trading. Various improvements to the facilities resulted in the achieving of a three star hotel grading with Qualmark in 2004. The Skotel Alpine Resort now holds its own on the International market hosting guests from all corners of the world as a year round destination. Kitchen Brigade Our Team of Chefs combine their International talents using fresh New Zealand produce with flair to bring out the best of flavour and taste sensations.
