PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS Woody Ornamentals (1997), International Society of Arboriculture Planting Steps 1. Make sure the site that you have prepared is appropriate for the type of tree you are planning to plant. Consider soils to support growth, sunlight, prevailing winds, mature size of the tree and water requirements. 118

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS 2. Dig hole (after checking for utilities) at least 3 times wider than the diameter of the basket. 3. Set the base of the basket in undisturbed soil. The flare at the base of the tree truck should be visible above ground once the tree is planted. Adjust if needed. 4. Back fill with original soil, or a mix of topsoil and compost 1/3 of the hole, then tamp gently but firmly. Continue filling the hole in layers, gently tamping each layer until the hole is 2/3 full. PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS 5. Remove twine from around the base of the tree. 6. Peel burlap away from the top of the ball. 7. Cut away the top of the basket. Optionally, wire basket hoops can be bent back and buried, or clipped about 10cm below the soil surface. 8. Moisten the soil to allow the root ball to settle, then backfill completely and tamp lightly. Apply mulch 2-3 inches after planting around the base of the tree. DECIDUOUS - Sheds leaves annually. CONFIEROUS - Retains leaves year round. 119

WATERING Watering Your Tree WATERING Water your new tree (5 minutes with a garden hose on ½ household pressure), 2-3 times a week (more often in hot weather). This amount of water will penetrate deep into the root system. Signs that a tree needs water: wilting, followed by browning off or crispy leaves and fall colouring or, in severe cases, leaf drop. Yellowing leaves is a sign that a tree has been watered too much. To conserve water keep weeds down and apply 2-3 inches of mulch (do not mulch up the truck) Create a 16 inch water basin to hold water. Since roots grow where oxygen and water are most available, short and frequent watering will result in the development of a shallow root system. Watering deeply, thoroughly and only as needed will encourage a deep and healthy root system that will be able to withstand environmental stresses. Adjustments should be made to dripper/sprinkler coverage and timing to ensure that all areas receive adequate water to supplement natural rainfall, without over watering or creating excess runoff. The British Columbia Landscape Standard (2008) Drought stress limits the growth of newly planted trees more than any other factor. Best Management Practices Tree Planting (2005) International Society of Arboriculture. 120

Importance of Soils TREE CARE Soil conditions play a huge role in planting success. Poorly drained, clay soils, typical of modern urban developments, require procedures much different from the well drained, crumbly soils found in older neighbourhoods. TREE CARE Soil texture is the ratio of particle sizes in the soil. Soil wetness and related drainage conditions are controlled by a number of factors, including precipitation, soil texture and structure, and landscape position. Soil reaction, or ph, is a general indication of nutrient availability. Season to Plant The best time of the year to plant is Spring and Fall because temperatures are moderate and rainfall is usually plentiful. Summer planting is also possible if a watering program is followed, particularly if the trees were dug from the nursery in the Spring. 121

TREE CARE Fertilization TREE CARE Fertilization at the time of planting is not recommended. Research has shown that fertilization is ineffective until the tree has partially established its own root system. A good rule of thumb is to wait six months after planting before adding any fertilization to soil. 122 Spring is generally the time of year when plants have their greatest flush of growth and therefore their greatest need for nutrients. Fertilizer comes in many forms and can be applied through root feedings or surface applications. Consult your local Garden Centre or Garden professional for the best fertilization for your area and soil type. Until the root system can grow and absorb more water, adding fertilizer to the soil is likely to be ineffective. Best Management Practices Tree Planting (2005) International Society of Arboriculture Mulching Studies have shown that wood-chip mulch can double the growth of the tree in the first couple years after planting.

TREE CARE A circle of mulch placed around newly planted tree will help retain soil moisture and help to prevent wide fluctuations in soil temperatures throughout the year. The mulch should cover at least four times the diameter of the root ball at the time of transplanting, and should be 3-4 inches deep. TREE CARE Taper mulch away from the trunk. DO NOT pile mulch against the trunk. Pruning Pruning is occasionally desirable or necessary to remove dead or diseased branches, improve tree structure, enhance vigour, and/or maintain safety. New trees shouldn t require much pruning. Prune only to remove damaged or broken branches. Work to help your tree develop strong branching by pruning away any limbs that appear to be damaged or are crossing or rubbing with others. Never make a cut that is flush with the surface and never leave a stub when pruning the tree. Cuts should be made so that the branch collar is left intact. 123

TREE CARE Pruning Con t TREE CARE Maintenance pruning is needed to help maintain the health of growing trees. Generally it should be done in late winter or very early spring when the tree is dormant. Structural pruning is used on young and medium-aged trees to help engineer a sustainable trunk and branch arrangement. Waiting until the tree grows larger makes structural pruning difficult and is more damaging to the tree. Best Management Practices Tree Pruning (2008) International Society of Arboriculture. 124 Staking If staking is required, place stakes in the ground on either side of the root ball, deep enough so they will not move with the wind. DO NOT place stakes directly through the root ball. Tie with flexible materials in a way that allows for some movement of the tree by the wind. Check ties frequently throughout the growing season, making sure the ties do not become too tight and girdle the tree. Stakes can normally be removed after two full growing seasons, but make sure the tree is well-rooted before pulling them out.

TREE CARE Winter Care Do not water heavily or fertilize with nitrogen in the early fall or the plant s dormancy will be delayed. Increase watering in late fall to provide trees with the water they need to withstand winter winds. TREE CARE To help protect against sunscald on young trees, use a commercial tree wrap in the fall to wrap from the base of the tree up to the first major branch. Browning or winter burn of evergreens is another common winter problem. Water evergreens very thoroughly throughout the growing season, lightly in early fall and then thoroughly before the soil freezes. Anti-desiccant sprays may help somewhat in preventing water loss from evergreens, but it is more effective to use burlap or a similar material to protect the tree. Animals can also do a great deal of damage to plants as winter snows force them to turn to the landscape for new food sources. Installing fencing around the trees, anchored firmly in the soil and extending well above snow level, may be the most successful. 125
