July 2015 SAVE THE DATE FOR OUR NEXT EVENING SOCIAL Free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. New Hampshire s One-Room Rural Schools: The Romance and the Reality Wednesday, August 12th Doors open at 5:00pm - Presentation at 6:00pm Presented by the NH Humanities Council Hundreds of one-room schools dotted the landscape of New Hampshire a century ago and were the backbone of primary education for generations of children. Revered in literature and lore, they actually were beset with problems, some of which are little changed today. The greatest issue was financing the local school and the vast differences between taxing districts in ability to support education. Other concerns included teacher preparation and quality, curriculum, discipline, student achievement and community involvement in the educational process. Steve Taylor explores the lasting legacies of the one-room school and how they echo today. A Matter of Balance Have you turned down a chance to go out with family or friends because you were concerned about falling? Have you cut down on a favorite activity because you might fall? If so, A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns About Falls is a program for you. Fear of falling can be just as dangerous as falling itself. People who develop this fear often limit their activities, which can result in severe physical weakness, making the risk of falling even greater. Many older adults also experience increased isolation and depression when they limit interactions with family and friends. Participants will learn to set realistic goals to increase activity, change their environment to reduce fall risk factors, and learn simple exercises to increase strength and balance. The Upper Valley Senior Center is offering A Matter of Balance on Thursdays, July 16th- September 3rd from 1-3 PM. Please call Jill at 603 448-4213 to register.
