Friday 15th June 2018 The Newsletter of King Henry VIII Preparatory School Academic Year 2017-2018 Issue 30 HEADS MESSAGE Whilst the Nursery and Year 6 children are actively polishing their performances for next week s productions, this week we were treated to a stunning musical extravaganza on the theme of bees from Year 2 pupils. It would be easy to focus on the clarity of the children s speech in a packed hall of adults (including brief bursts of Shakespeare); the complexity of the songs; the confidence shown in dance or indeed the strong environmental theme delivered with Attenborough-style conviction; but what struck me the most was their message that however small and unimportant we might personally feel, we all matter as individuals and we are all capable of making a positive difference to the world. In School this year we have been introducing The Thrive Approach when offering support to individuals or small groups of children who might be struggling socially and emotionally. We have already developed a Thrive Hive at Swallows and have drawn up plans for a similar provision at Hales. Our Swallows Hive is used daily and provides a safe, stimulating space for reflection. Some parents will already have met Mrs Gayton, who is our Thrive practitioner, and to ensure we can reach even more children if needs arise, Miss Soan, Mrs Parkes and Mrs Brindley are currently also being trained as practitioners. This is a commitment of ten full days so you can imagine the complexity of study required! We will be sharing more information about the Thrive Approach early next year but if you are interested there is plenty of information on their website. www.thriveapproach.com Alongside this exciting initiative, Miss Wozencroft is studying with the Carnegie Institute of Education at Leeds Beckett University. Her work centres on supporting our whole school community to be mentally healthy. We are proud that the University is recognising KHPS as the first Independent Preparatory School to be embarking on achieving a Kitemark award for our work in this crucial area. Happy children learn well they thrive! At King Henry s Prep we commit to supporting our children to become citizens of the world resilient, confident and compassionate. Any children will be encouraged to take part in some parts of the demonstration, so please feel free to join us!" AUDITION SUCCESS! We were recently contacted by the Children's Casting Director of none other that the RSC looking for boys to audition for a role starting this Summer. As is the way of these things, she was very specific about the look and persona of the boy they were looking for, and two of our Year 5 boys were able to attend an audition in Stratford last Saturday. We are absolutely delighted that Haresh in Year 5 has been offered the dual part of Olympia's Son and Young Callapine in the Christopher Marlowe play Tamburlaine the Great directed by Michael Boyd. Rehearsals start very soon and the play opens in Stratford in August and runs until early December. As part of the role, Haresh will need to throw a bucketful of stage blood over the heads of the adult actors playing his parents and also be stabbed on stage by his mother - a little different to the shows Haresh has so far been part of at KHPS! Hopefully some of us will be able to go to see him perform. Well done Haresh! YEAR 6 DRAMA WEEK 2018 This week has been Year 6 Drama week! In readiness for our production of Aladdin next week, our budding thespians have had the opportunity of working with a professional set designer; designing and constructing their own sets to give our performances that professional edge. To supplement our homemade sets, we have also been loaned some amazing props and costumes from the Imagine Theatre Company - for which we are very grateful! We have been lucky enough to have benefitted from the talents of a West End choreographer who has set many of the dances within the show! During any spare moments, pupils have been designing programmes - with the winning ones being used during show week. Our thanks go to all of our visitors and staff for their hard work this week and since rehearsals began in January and also to our parents for their support and help with costumes. Performances of this entertaining extravaganza will take place on Tuesday 19th June at 4:30pm, Wednesday 20th and Thursday 21st June at 6.30pm. Tickets already booked will be sent out by the office today. Any remaining tickets can be obtained next week from the Hales office. We hope to see you there! Break a leg, Year 6!
