In five years imports of grapes, mangoes and onions increased. Data on tomatoes and chilies are not available. 2. Imports Analysis Grapes As per the available data from ITC trade map, Philippines imported 14748 tons and US$ 8,799 thousands worth of grapes in 2006 that represent a tremendous increase (107%) in import value over the year 2005. In 2006 top five exporters of grapes to Philippines are United States of America (64% of total import), Australia (20%), Chile (14%), China (2%) and Myanmar. The total quantity of imports in the year 2006 was 14748 tons. The average unit price of Grapes per ton is US $ 597. (Tables I, II and III) The average annual the value and quantity in the last five year are 42 % and 20% respectively. This shows that the price of the grapes has gone up double than the increase in the quantity of imports of grapes in Philippines. Mangoes According to a recent available data the Philippines imported US$ 119 thousands worth of mangoes in 2006 that represent a decrease in import value over the year 2005. The Philippines imported 16 ton of mangoes in 2006 that represent a decline in ton by 7 ton over the year 2005. Record shows that the top exporter of mangoes to Philippines is Japan (61%) followed by Taiwan with 34% share. The unit price of mangoes per ton is US $ 7438 per ton. The the value in the past five is negative -14%. This data shows that Philippines is not a promising market for mango export. (Tables IV, V and VI) Onions The Philippines imported from world 76,000 tons onions of US$ 10 million. About 91% of import market shares were taken by India (43%), China (38%) and the Netherlands (10%). 77
Other small suppliers of onions to the Philippines are Hong Kong, New Zealand, the USA, and Singapore. Though India is the second largest onions exporters in the world market, India s onion exports to Philippines is quite a recent phenomenon. India s export to Philippines from the year 2006 increased drastically. Total quantity of export by India in the year 2006 was 25,983 tons. The average unit price of imported onions was $ 133 per ton in 2006. Price received by Indian onions was also very high ($165/ton) as compared to other traditional onion suppliers such as the Netherlands ($112/ton) and China ($117/ton). The the value and quantity in the past five year is 179% and 78% respectively.
