6 A Brief History of Sedlmayers on Spirit Lake. Top: Chautauqa Bridge and Boat house era 1915 Left: Chautauqa Grounds, era (photos courtesy of the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture/Eastern Washington Sedlmayers roots begin just a few years after the end of world war II with the son of a Spirit Lake pioneer Homer Conklin. Conklin purchased the long forgotten southern part of the Chautauqua grounds just south of the old Chautauqua Bridge. The Chautaugua grounds was a favorite meeting place for summer visitors in the early 1900 s. On the northern section of the grounds Conklin first opened the Anchor-Inn Marina, which after Conklin retired was sold to Bud Anderson and became the Christmas Tree Resort and then later became the private Lake Haven Resort. Later the old Hooker Place on the eastern portion of the grounds re-opened as the Miller Resort and later became today s Chautauqua Resort. In the late fifties the southern portion of the grounds was purchased by Fred Lundemo who opened a dance hall and resort. Soon after Ed Sedlmayers purchased the Lundemo property and began work to develop Sedlmayers Resort. For 21 Years Ed Sedlmayers operated this unique summertime destination. Sedlmayers was know for suppling almost any legal enjoyment one might want from boat rentals, fuel, good food and libations to rental cabins and RV spaces. Ed personally tended bar and his fine dance hall and live music was a favororite of summertime visitors. In the late 80 s Sedlmayers closed and remained empty for over 20 years. In 2010 the resort was purchased by Randy Hurst who had grown up around Spirit Lake and had many found memories of the original Sedlmayers. Restoration began, bringing back the Sedlmayer name and resort to reflect the great memories of the past and make new memories for it s visitors far into the future.
