1 Season s Greetings Mass on Christ s Day Kacie Brode The history of Christmas started on December 25, 336 AD. The Pope Julius said that the birth of Jesus would be celebrated that day and that s the day the festival of Jesus birth would be held. The whole holiday started with a festival, then became a yearly tradition for Christians to celebrate the birth of Jesus. Christmas began in Rome (founded in Palestine and first celebrated in Italy) in 350 AD and the gift-giving tradition started with the story of the 3 Magi giving gifts to baby Jesus. Also, the tradition of a Christmas tree started because they decided it would symbolize Christ. This tradition started in Germany. (Fun Fact: Christmas means mass on Christ s day ). Viviana Ramirez On Thanksgiving Day, families come together to spend quality time with each other. Families from different backgrounds create either their own cultural foods or American traditional Thanksgiving meals. For example, a lot of Hispanic families eat delicious foods like tamales, menudo, pozole, and eat delicious desserts like bunuelos. These specific dishes are very traditional to Hispanics, especially during the holidays. Cultures from all over America likes to share their own dishes on Thanksgiving. There re also traditional Thanksgiving dishes such as mashed potatoes, turkey, ham, macaroni, and even green bean casserole. Then we end the meal with traditional desserts such as pumpkin pie, sweet potatoes with marshmallows, apple pie, and more pies! Students shared with me what they eat on Thanksgiving and what's their favorite dish. Some of them even shared how to make some of their delicious dishes! Darius Jackson, student- Darius shared with me what he likes to eat on Thanksgiving. A traditional plate you eat? - homemade fried chicken Who makes it? - my Mother Why is it your favorite? 2 Thanksgiving First President George Washington Travis Jones Thanksgiving is the American holiday that s most associated with food, hands down. Turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, sweet potato casserole, mashed potatoes, pumpkin pie you name it, and it s probably on the table. There was no pumpkin pie on the table on that first day of thanks. In fact, very little of what those first Americans ate resembles anything that we now associate with this foodie holiday. How do we know what the Pilgrims served during their celebration? Well, we have a couple of first-hand accounts that fill in some of the blanks, and food historians have been able to make very educated guesses about the rest. One of our original sources for this information is the Pilgrim chronicler Edward Winslow. In his journal, Winslow and that their Wampanoag friends arrived to the party with five deer. Governor Bradford also wrote of the celebration, indicating that he invited several of their local allies, including the Wampanoag chief Massasoit. His manuscript also mentions the hunting trip and the Wampanoag arrival with the deer. From these sources we know that meat was a huge part of that first gathering. Historians know that the fowl that would have been hunted was wild turkey, goose, or duck. Passenger pigeons or swans may have also been available. Due to the fact that the Pilgrims only would have had access to open fires for cooking, historians can also surmise the method of cooking for the meat. Smaller birds would have been roasted on spits, as would the venison after it was cut into pieces. Larger birds, like the wild turkey, would have been boiled first. After the initial cooking they may have also been stuffed with onions and herbs, or shelled chestnuts. They may have then been roasted a little over the open flame, to enhance the flavor. That year, the first President of the brand-new United States of America, George Washington, issued a national proclamation calling for Americans to spend a day in gratitude, celebrating the end of the Revolutionary War and the successful ratification of the US Constitution. Ms. Hale was a prolific writer and the editor of a very popular ladies magazine, Godey s Lady s Book. After reading Mr. Young s work, she embarked on a seventeen-year-long campaign to establish an official national day of thanks. She wrote numerous editorial pieces as well as letters making her case to local politicians, governors, and five different presidents. Throughout this time, she also used her magazine as a platform to promote her idea to the women of the United States. Along with the magazine editorials, Hale included recipes and full menus for the special day. Some of the recipes she came up with or recommended included roast turkey and dressing, creamed onions, mashed turnips, mashed potatoes, and of course pumpkin pie Today, the average cost of a Thanksgiving dinner is less than you think. Thanksgiving dinner is cheaper this year a five-year low, but you might not be feeling it. Godey s Lady s Book was a popular 19 th Century women s magazine edited by Sarah J. Hale, an advocate for women s education. First Thanksgiving proclamation in the United States was issues by George Washington. Kacey Brode For the average American family, the price tag of this year's Thanksgiving dinner will be at its lowest since According to a new report from the American Farm Bureau Federation, a table of turkey and all the fixings will cost approximately $49.12 for a group of 10 (including leftovers) Thanksgiving is a holiday where you gather around with loved ones and eat great food and enjoy one another s company. On the fourth Thursday of November we celebrate this holiday, but how did it all start? Well, it all begins with the Pilgrims and them arriving to the United States in Plymouth (Massachusetts) in They had run into a Patuxent Indian, Squanto, who taught them how to fish and grow corn which had helped the Pilgrims a lot. They had a peace treaty among them and the Wampanoag Nation which resulted in them being friends and not enemies. In 1621, they had a feast that lasted 3 whole days with 90 Native Americans and 53 Pilgrims. This was the start of Thanksgiving. Later, Thanksgiving was celebrated to teach children about American freedom. Food that they had eaten included venison (deer), ham, clams, lobster, fruit, pumpkin and squash. Turkey didn t become the traditional meat to eat until 1863 when Abraham Lincoln had made Thanksgiving an official holiday. Turkey was chosen because it was known as such a uniquely American bird and so they chose the turkey to be a traditional meal for this day. (Fun Fact: 46 million turkeys are eaten on Thanksgiving a year!) PAGE 2

4 Understanding LGBT PRIDE Aiden Ochoa We here at Ombudsman accept everyone, despite gender identity or sexuality, and show respect towards our LGBTQ+ students. This month, we will discuss LGBT students, the problems they face and how one can show tolerance and acceptance. Ombudsman is for everyone in every type of situation; this is a place where students can feel safe while getting an education at their own pace. While they try to teach us everything, there are some things advancing so fast, there are areas going unnoticed. It is reported around 8% of students identify as LGBT and half report being verbally harassed. We can start the education process by understanding LGBTQ+, opening one's perspective, and figuring where hatred is rooted. We can start that process by understanding this world is full of different people, not just people of different cultures and body types but of different experiences, personalities, people with different mental states, with mental disorders or gender dysphoria*. Next, we must find out where the hate comes from. It may be from a negative experience or like most cases, the hatred is taught by older generations, and these views are typically dated, and stereotypes are invalid. To understand, you must view things from the other side, you must have empathy and understand one does not choose the lifestyle, and no one would choose to become a target for harassment. Anyone can understand love, we all love things like our possessions, food, people, some people just love differently than you. Trans people are a bit more complicated, but to simplify how they feel-- imagine when you were young, and your mother forced you to wear a dumb costume you didn t want. You do one of two things, tell her and potentially upset her or don t say anything. So, you don t want to start controversy and suffer in silence. People seem to have trouble understanding these things, but don t make the effort to ask people who are open to talking about it. If you d like to learn more, research gender identities, find LGBT centers near you and find people of the community who want to talk about it. Finally, if you can t fully accept LGBT people, then show tolerance. To show tolerance, one would act civil, like any other human, respect their pronouns, like he or she, and respect their choices, like transitioning or choosing not to talk about it. You may also show tolerance/acceptance by defending those being bullied, by stepping in, defusing the situation and removing them from it. You can show your support by treating them like a friend, listening to them, helping them, and you can go as far as to help them find resources if needed. Gender Dysphoria: the condition of feeling one's emotional and psychological identity as male or female to be opposite to one's biological sex. My name is Aidan and thank you for reading my special article. I m a proud transgender man and open to educate anyone who truly wants to learn more. I am also here to support my fellow community members. PAGE 4
