2 Foods The Native Americans ate beans,indian corn, squash, maize, sweet potatoes, fish, fry bread, papayas, many meats and marine mammals.many Native American tribes did not like to waste food.they liked their meals fresh without any spices.they roasted their meat over a fire or grilled on hot stones,and the fish was often baked or smoked.native Americans drank water with their meals.

3 Foods continued -3. cups of flour -enough cooking. oil for pan -1/2 ts of salt -1 1/4 ts of baking. powder -1 1/3 cup warm water How to make indian fry bread: mix flour,baking powder,and salt. Add warm water and knead until dough is soft not sticky. Stretch and pat dough until thin.tear off one piece at a time; and poke a hole in the center.drop into a pan of hot cooking oil. Make sure bread is brown on both sides and serve hot.

4 Toys and Games Lacrosse is a game devised by Native Americans. The Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) call Tewaarathon or lacrosse their national game. The game continues to be played by Haudenosaunee,but it has been transformed into a competitive sport. The Powhatans played stickball (which was adopted by french canadian settlers and became the modern day lacross.) Pebble Patterns ~Get 30 pebbles/buttons/cut outs/coins ~One person make a pattern ~That person mess it up ~Have the other person try to recreate it ~Keep doing this until you want to stop THE OBJECTIVE: Is to have the game get more complex as it goes along.

6 American Indian Historical Figures Powhatans: Pocahontas- She married John Rolfe an English Pilgrim from Jamestown, they thought it would give good relationships with the settlers and the Native Americans. She married Kocoum, a native, before John Rolfe though. Wampanoags: Massasoit- Massasoit was the leader of the Wampanoags and signed the earliest recorded in New England.

7 American Indian Historical Figures continued... Cherokee: Moytoy of Tellico was crowned emperor of the Cherokees. Sir Alexander Cumming crowned Moytoy of Tellico as "Emperor" of the Cherokee. He agreed to recognize King George II of Great Britain. Cumming arranged to take seven prominent Cherokee, including Attakullakulla,to London, England. The Cherokee signed the Treaty of Whitehall with the British. The Treaty of Whitehall declared that "though the two Countries might be at war in Europe their Colonies in America should continue in peace and Neutrality." Moytoy's son Amo-sgasite(Dreadful Water) attempted to succeed him as "Emperor" in 1741,but the Cherokees elected their own leader,cunne Shote (Standing Turkey) of Chota.

8 Native American Education Learning about their culture was the most important thing in their education. Things they learned about their culture: Religious Beliefs: The Powhatan Indians worshiped a hierarchy of gods and spirits.they believed in two major gods; Ahone,the creator and giver of good things,and Oke,the evil spirit. How they were taught: The education of the Powhatan children was done

9 Native American Education continued informally by relatives. The storytellers of the tribe would enhance their education with the myths and legends of the tribe. The expectations for them were very high.it was the mother's job to teach her son how to hunt. The boy would not be able to eat until he hit the target his mother through for him. As they improved the would earn new names to denote their achievements. Girls learned women's responsibilities at an early age by watching and helping other women in the tribe.they were

10 Native American Education continued allowed to learn at their own pace. There were so many jobs that everyday was different. As a girl became older she would be expected to gather fire wood,scrape/tan deer hides,and become more active with planting,weeding,and harvesting fields.

11 How Natives made a Living Food: traded,hunted,fished,grew corn,squash and other crops. Womans Jobs: prepared,preserved,grew,and cooked food,made baskets and pots,gathered wood,tanned,cleaned,and prepared animal skins,cared for kids Men Jobs: hunted,fished,farmed,cared for animals,built shelters,weapons,canoes,and tools,traded

12 Native American Clothing Native American Men: In most tribes, they wore breechcloths or breech clothes (a long rectangular piece of hide or cloth tucked over a belt, so that the flaps fell down in front and behind), sometimes with leather leggings attached in colder climates. Native American Women: Wore skirts, leggings and moccasins(a sturdy leather shoe.) For tops women wore tunics and mantles(a women dress).

13 Powhatan Clothing Powhatan children: Young children wore little or no clothing. When they were 7 or 8 years old, boys and girls began to wear a breech cloth. At about the age of 10 they began to dress in buckskin clothes like their parents. Powhatan Children

14 Identified Systems The tribe system depends on the food system for hunting and growing crops.the villagers depend on the chief of the government which is Massasoit.The government system is made up of different high ranked systems. The inputs change when wild animals come and try to eat the men's farm animals. The boundaries change when the tribe fights for new land. The outputs could change when some tribesmen go out for a long journey.

15 Extra Information A Powhatan girl could marry at age 13. A Powhatan boy could marry after they took "the test of "manhood". Which is about 14 to 17 years old. The Puritan minister John Eliot spent his entire career in Massachusetts seeking conversions among the Indians. The Puritans' published more than 20 religious books in the Massachusett language between 1654 and 1690, including a complete translation.
