We ve always got you in mind. 2 Are YOU Ready For Winter? Winter isn t here just yet but we are already being slammed with the cold air and artic drafts! We have compiled a few suggestions and ideas to prepare yourself, and your apartment, for these frigid temperatures. Make or buy draft dodgers. You can limit the impact a cold breeze has on your space by blocking it with a simple draft dodger. They are easy to make but if you do not have the time or the inclination, they are not expensive to buy either. Use them to stop cold air flows around windows and doors. Test your heating system. Before cold weather hits, make sure your heating system is working like it should. Simply turn on your heat and make sure warm air is coming out of the vent! We would prefer to fix the situation before it gets too cold for all of us. Also, make sure you take a look at your filter! If it needs changed please call in and we will have it replaced. A clean filter will do your apartment wonders! Reverse your ceiling fan. In the summer, ceiling fan blades cool a room by pushing cold air down. In the winter, you want the opposite to happen. Most ceiling fans come complete with a switch that allows you to reverse the direction the blades spin. Flip it to get a little help with keeping warm air near the part of the room you re living in. Inspect windows. Look over your windows and determine if they have leaks or are drafty. You can shrink wrap your windows, block off drafty portions, or invest in heavy draperies that will stop the bulk of the drafts. Learn to use your thermostat. If you have a programmable thermostat, you can save big by programming it to warm the house when you re there and cool it when you re not. (These are not customary in our units, however if you do buy one we can install it for you!) If you don t have one, consider adding one to you place or simply putting the heat up or down when you leave and come home. Also, check your batteries in your thermostat! We suggest replacing them right before the winter months hit so you have new batteries and a proper reading. Page 2
3 .. (are you ready for winter?).. Continued.. Check your smoke detectors. Between holiday lights, candles, space heaters, and other devices, there are plenty of fire hazards in the winter. Make sure your smoke alarms are in good working order so you ll be alerted of any hazards with enough time to get out of the house. Invest in warm bedding. You ll keep yourself from shivering at night when you re sleeping by getting flannel sheets, a down comforter, or other types of super warm bedding. Stock up on essentials. A crazy snowstorm could make it hard to get out of your place to get food or other essentials. Keep water, pet food, and canned items on hand to carry you through times when you can t get out. We hope this helps in your preparation s for winter! Please let us know in the office if you have any questions. We want to remind those of you who have been here for a while, and let those of you who are sharing your first winter with us, of our snow and ice removal protocol! We have one Maintenance Technician who plows the property, so please be patient with him as he removes the snow! Ice will be prevented with the laying of salt, but keep in mind that sometimes even salt can be a disaster. Mind your step and make sure this winter is safe! We will work as quickly as possible to get and keep the sidewalks clear. Page 3

We d love to see your results! (And taste them if you re generous enough ) Ingredients Melting Snowman 3/4 cup sweetened condensed milk 1-1/2 teaspoons peppermint extract 2-1/4 to 2-1/2 cups confectioners' sugar 1/2 cup baking cocoa 1 pound white candy coating, chopped, divided 7 to 8 Starburst candies (orange for noses and colors of your choice for earmuffs) 1/3 cup dark chocolate chips Add to Shopping List Directions 1. In a small bowl, combine milk and extract. Stir in 2 cups confectioners' sugar and cocoa to form a dough. Turn onto a surface lightly sprinkled with confectioners' sugar. Knead in enough remaining confectioners' sugar to form a soft dough (dough should not be sticky). twenty-four 1/2-in. balls. Shape remaining portions of dough into twenty-four 1-in. balls. On waxed paper-lined baking sheets, flatten each 1-in. ball into an irregular 1-1/2- in. circle. 3. In a microwave-safe bowl, melt 2 oz. white candy coating. Using melted coating, attach a 1/2-in. ball near an edge of each circle. Let dry 1 hour. 4. Using Starburst candies, cut out noses and earmuffs as desired. Melt remaining white candy coating; cool slightly. Working in batches of six, spoon candy coating over snowmen, allowing coating to drape over each until completely covered. Immediately attach noses and earmuffs. Let stand at room temperature until dry to the touch, about 1 hour. 5. In a microwave, melt chocolate chips; stir until smooth. Using a toothpick and melted chocolate, form eyes, mouths, buttons and tops of earmuffs. 2. Divide into thirds. Shape one portion into Page 7
