SUPPORTERS ACTION PACK Grown up gatherings, helping children with a lot on their plate
Welcome Thank you for choosing to support Place2Be by taking part in our Food4Thought campaign. With your help we can continue to be there for thousands of children in schools burdened by their troubles so they can view life with a sense of hope, rather than hopelessness, whilst also supporting families and teachers. This Food4Thought pack will provide you with everything you need to get started including event ideas, information about Place2Be, event materials and some delicious recipes. Thank you again and enjoy it! Benita Refson OBE Chief Executive
Event Ideas Event ideas There are lots of ways you can take part in Food4Thoughts to raise vital funds for children with a lot on their plate. Don t forget to encourage people to dig-deep before they dig-in! A Place At The Table It s simple have dinner, raise money and make a difference! Invite your friends and family over for a dinner party as paying guests. A great way of fundraising whilst socialising and treating yourself to some delicious food. Afternoon Tea Add a touch of class to your fundraising with a sophisticated afternoon tea. Finger sandwiches, scones and a selection of teas are a mouth-watering must. Bake-Off Compete with friends, family and colleagues to see who will be crowned the baking king / queen with a cake that would make Mary Berry jealous! Charge per entry and then sell the cakes on to double your fundraising opportunities. Birthday Party If you ve got a birthday party coming up why not have friends and family round for food at home? Ask people to donate the money they would have spent on a meal out to Place2Be instead. BBQ Hold a BBQ at your local school, pub or community centre with all profits from food sales going to Place2Be. To cut down on costs why not try to get your food donated from a local butcher? Cake Sale Get your apron on and your rolling pin out and start baking some cakes for Place2Be. Sell these at your office, social groups or among family and friends and give them a treat they won t have to feel guilty about. Children s Party Host a special party for your child and ask them to invite all their school friends. Ask parents for a donation towards Place2Be and let the fun begin! Big kids may also want to re-live their youth with a childhood themed party in aid of Place2Be.
Event Ideas Coffee Morning Whether it s at home, in the office or out with friends you can re-charge your batteries, have a natter and raise money for Place2Be. Pastries, biscuits, muffins and a pot of fresh coffee are sure to inspire plenty of donations. Come Dine With Me Challenge yourself and four other friends to a week of Come Dine With Me style dinner parties. Each take it in turns to cook for and entertain the group and at the end of each meal score your host. By the end of the week make sure to have your golden spoon ready for the winning chef! Easter Egg Hunt Get friends, families and classmates together for a traditional Easter Egg Hunt. Make everyone who takes part pay an entrance fee and let the hunt begin! Fruit Stall A healthy option! Save colleagues trudging to the shops by setting up your own fruit stall at work. Buy cheaply in bulk and then sell at a profit for Place2Be. Halloween Whether it s a pumpkin carving competition, apple bobbing or some special spooky baking Halloween is a great time to get people together and raise some money. Picnic Brave the British summer and head to the park with family and friends for a traditional picnic. Ask everyone to bring a dish, make a donation and join in with some outdoor games. Why should teddies have all the fun? Recipe Share Everyone s got a treasured recipe that friends, colleague and family would do anything to get hold of. Arrange a recipe share where people bring along a favourite recipe and pay to uncover the secret ingredients behind each other s coveted culinary creations. Winter Warmer Host an evening of mince pies, Yule logs and mulled wine to brighten up the cold winter nights. Throw in some Christmas carols and party games and ask guests to get into the seasonal giving spirit.
Raising Money Raising Money There are lots of ways to raise money through your event you can mix and match the ideas below or come up with your own. If your event raises over 50 you will be entered in to a prize draw to win one of our wonderful raffle prizes. Entrance Fee Ask guests to pay a donation on entry or in advance. If you don t want to deal with cash then set up a Virgin Money Giving page and friends can donate online before the event. Pay The Bill Put your cooking skills to the test and ask guests to donate whatever they would have paid for the meal at a restaurant. Place Setting Envelopes Leave an envelope for donations at each place setting so people can make discreet donations, big or small! Become a Friend of Place2Be We rely on regular donations to fund our work all year round. If friends and family would prefer to support us in a more long term way then they can fill out a Place2Be Become a Friend form and set up a regular donation that suits them. Auction Ask friends to bring food, prizes or simply their talents to offer in an auction at your event. Raffle Ask local companies and shops to donate prizes and friends to donated unwanted gifts. Sell raffle tickets to your guests and draw the winners at the end of the night.
Crisp Skinned Sea Bass On Bacon Greens By Antony Worrall Thompson Recipe suggestions Serves 4 For the Sea Bass 4 x 175g (6oz) sea bass fillets, skin on, scaled and pin-boned Seasoned flour 1 tbs olive oil 25g (1 oz) unsalted butter Salt and ground white pepper For the Greens 6 rashers of smoked streaky bacon, cut in lardons 1 tbs olive oil 25g (1 oz) unsalted butter 2 leeks, cut in thin slices ¼ savoy cabbage, cored and very finely shredded 150ml/5 fl oz double cream 25g (1 oz) freshly grated parmesan cheese Season the sea bass fillets with salt and ground black pepper, dip the skin side only in the seasoned flour. Heat the oil in a large non-stick frying pan and place the sea bass fillets, skin side down, and cook over a medium heat for 6 minutes. The fish will try to curl up as soon as it hits the heat, so push it down with a fish slice so that the whole surface of the skin remains in contact with the heat. Add the butter to the pan, turn off the heat and turn the fish over and its flesh sides, basting with the butter, allow the fish to gently finish cooking from the residual heat of the pan. Meanwhile for the greens, cook the bacon in hot oil in a frying pan until golden, add the butter, then the leeks and cabbage and cook for 3-4 minutes until wilted, increase the heat and add the cream, cook until thickened about 2 minutes, fold in the parmesan and season to taste. Spoon the greens on the centre of four warmed plates and top with the sea bass. Garnish with roast cherry tomatoes.
Recipe suggestions Party Crème Brulee By Mary Berry Serves 12 or more 1200mls (2 pints) double cream 300mls (1/2 pint) single cream 84g (3oz) caster sugar 12 egg yolks 3 teaspoons vanilla extract 225g (8oz) Demerara sugar A classic dessert, brilliant for numbers. Freeze the leftover egg whites in a plastic container. 30mls of whites = 1 egg white. If liked serve with soft summer fruits or a fruit coulis. If you wish to make individual ramekins this quantity will make 12. The cooking time will be shorter - about 20 minutes but keep an eye on them when in the oven. Pre heat the oven to 160C/140/Fan/Gas 3. You will need a wide based shallow 4 pint ovenproof dish, buttered (the wider the base the more crunchy the topping!). Measure the double and single cream into a saucepan. Heat until just below boiling point (just hot enough to put your finger in). Measure the caster sugar, yolks and vanilla extract into a large mixing bowl and mix together with a hand whisk just to combine. Pour the hot cream onto the egg yolk mixture, whisking quickly until combined. Pour the custard through a sieve into the buttered dish. Put the dish into a large roasting tin and pour boiling water around the edge of the dish until half full. Carefully slide into the oven and cook for minutes checking after 30 minutes until set but with a slight wobble in the middle. Remove from the oven and leave to cool in the roasting tin. Place in the fridge and chill until stone cold. Sprinkle over the Demerara sugar, then grill under a hot grill watching it very carefully for minutes until melted and golden brown. You could use a blowtorch if you prefer. Chill in the fridge for about 5-10 hours (this gives time for the brulee to soften slightly before serving.) To serve divide and lift out the portions using a fish slice you will get portions. AGA Slide the dish on the lowest set of runners in the roasting oven with the cold sheet on the second set of runners and bake for 15 minutes until just set around the edges. Transfer to the simmering oven for about 45 minutes until slight wobble in the middle but set around. Cool in the dish. Make the caramel in a pan on the simmering plate. PREPARE AHEAD The baked custard can be made up to two days ahead. The brulee topping can be made up to 5-10 hours ahead. Do not leave too long otherwise the brulee with turn to liquid.
