2 The Oscar Wilde Bar, formerly the iconic Grill Room (established in 1865), has been exquisitely restored to its authentic Louis XVI detailing with an elaborate gold leaf ceiling and enriched panelled mouldings. The wonderful interplay of light reflecting from the mirrored walls gives a heightened sense of space and drama, providing the perfect surrounding for a schedule of live entertainment including the signature Salon des Artistes presented by The Black Cat Cabaret. Nestled between the elegance of Mayfair and the creativity of Soho, the Oscar Wilde Bar is the space where great minds came together to change the world. It is in this very room that Oscar Wilde fell in love with Lord Alfred Douglas, Aubrey Beardsley debated with Whistler, David Bowie retired Ziggy Stardust and Mick Jagger, The Beatles and Elizabeth Taylor danced the night away. From smashing a bottle against the bow of ship before its maiden voyage to throwing Champagne glasses on the floor at special cultural events or simply raising a glass to toast to a significant occasion. The tradition of drinking Champagne to mark a celebration originated in the royal courts of Europe prior to 1789, where the expensive drink was viewed as a status symbol and said to have positive effects on women's beauty and man's wit. There is no more joyous sound than the popping of a Champagne cork, the fizz as it s poured and the clink of glass flutes coming together; a sound that would undoubtedly have rung around Café Royal over the centuries and continues to be heard in its reincarnation.
