1 It had been with arduous contemplation and preparation of epic proportions that I had come to plan my journey across the Old Continents. I had endured the laborious task of pouring over maps and literature, many of which were located in various far-off libraries to which often I had been required to travel in order to locate particular sought-after and necessary resources. Similarly, I had spent many nights wandering from tavern to tavern in search of the counsel of those better-travelled; those who had endured the bitter cold of the most northern of points, or the blistering depths of the desert. It was then that a thought occurred to me: what if there existed a place where one could seek the advice of an expert while his finger simultaneously trailed the creases of the world s most rare and detailed maps? A place where intrepid explorers and travellers - old and new - could plan journeys, tame or perilous? A place explorers would make merry over tipples collected from all corners of the globe, exhibiting flavours and spices they thought that they would never come to encounter? Should such a place exist, it surely could be a society based fundamentally on one s yearning for the unknown - The Society of Exploration. Phileas J. Fogg, Esq. 2 The Mechanical Mixologist It was during my time visiting the Americas, frequenting the establishments of Jerry P. Thomas, that I first tasted the perfect Negroni. The secrets of this fine cocktail had been imparted to the Professor during his famous silver-tool-toting tour of Europe, during which his services had been employed by the great General Pascal-Olivier de Negroni, Comte de Negroni, creator of this delightful libation, at the said gentleman s liberation party (recently having been freed from the grasp of the Prussian forces). Upon my return, I sought a person capable of recreating Jerry s Negroni, but, alas, neither man nor monkey was successful. It was then that it occurred to me that I was in need of something absent from the capabilities of man: replicable, unwavering consistency. I required a machine able to work to a precise specification every time, without fail; a contraption of an industrial nature; a cocktail compounder. Thus was she born: The Mechanical Mixologist.
