6 Prohibition was a measure passed in 1920 meant to fight moral evil in America. Ironically, it was this very measure that ushered in an era ruled by organized crime. After the 18th Amendment took effect, production and trade of alcohol went underground. Stills were built in rural areas, back rooms and basements. Rumrunners smuggled brand-name booze from Canada, Europe and the Caribbean. Underground saloons sprouted by the thousands. These speakeasies were the beating heart of the Roaring 20s, a time of dramatic change. Speakeasies cultivated jazz music, dance crazes and the rise of the flappers young women who embraced bold fashions and liberated behavior. The Mob ran many speakeasies, as well as the operations that supplied the booze. Weak public support for Prohibition and rampant political corruption created an environment in which illicit alcohol trade flourished. Prohibition turned small-time hoodlums into millionaire bosses. The Underground at The Mob Museum is a living exhibition, encompassing the culture of Prohibition and evoking the grit and glamour of the 1920s.
