2 Pompions By Barbara Bunsey What s a pompion? It s an antique word for many sorts of similar-looking pumpkins and squash. The Greek word pepon means large melon. Pompions were a very important food source and critical for survival during winter months. European explorers found a profusion of pompions in the New World. Supplies: DecoArt DuraClear Soft Touch Varnish #72013 Brushes: Papillon by the Artist s Club Glaze Wash, size ¾ #20102 Shader, size 8 #20129; size 10 #20130; size 16 #20133 Script Liner, size 0 #20140 Filbert, size 6 #20118; size 12 #20121 Highlighter Set #20173 Preparation: There is no preparation necessary, the resin surface comes ready to paint. Any slight imperfections can be lightly sanded. Wipe with a damp cloth. Wash entire background with Dark Chocolate. Since the resin is non-porous, you will need less water in your brush. Painting Instructions: Background Pompion: Base with a brush-mix of Spiced Pumpkin + Spicy Mustard (approx. 1:1) with #12 filbert. Using dry 1/4 highlighter, pick up Saffron Yellow and Spicy Mustard in brush, take out excess on palette, and apply to each section in the lightest areas, beginning at front right, where it is brightest, and moving toward darker areas so you have less paint in your brush. Pick up Antique White in dirty brush, take out excess, and again, beginning in brightest area, add more highlights; add more Antique White in dirty brush as above and apply, beginning in brightest area first, then moving toward back, but do not apply to back areas; repeat, adding more Antique White to dirty brush and adding extra highlights to front brightest areas only. Take excess paint out of brush, pick up Spiced Pumpkin to temper brush, then pick up Antique Green, take out excess, and apply to bottom areas and here-and-there on pumpkin surface for added color; repeat, picking up 1

3 Avocado to darkest areas. Float a mix of Spiced Pumpkin + Dark Chocolate (approx. 1:1) to separate sections, to right of stem, and at bottom left and right, walking color up; repeat, using just Dark Chocolate. Wash over entire pumpkin with Spiced Pumpkin. Add a little extra shading at bottom left and right and next to stem with Antique Green, then add touches of Purple Rain to darkest shadow areas. Stem: Base with a brush-mix of Antique Green + Spicy Mustard (approx. 2:1). Using dry 1/4 highlighter, pick up Avocado Dip, take out excess, then apply to brightest areas of stem, including cut end; repeat, picking up Spicy Mustard in dirty brush; repeat, picking up Antique White in dirty brush and only applying to cut end and top three sections of stem; repeat, picking up more Antique White and applying only to very top section of stem. Shade at top of each section, except top one, with Antique Green. Also shade at bottom right of stem where it attaches to pumpkin, top of cut edge, under cut edge, and entire right side of stem, walking color toward center with Antique Green. Repeat, using Avocado; repeat, using Evergreen in very darkest areas only. Add touches of Purple Wave here-and-there. I wanted to push this pumpkin into the background, so I washed over the entire area with Dark Chocolate. Large Pompion: Base Spiced Pumpkin with #12 filbert. Using dry 1/2 highlighter pick up Spiced Pumpkin, take out excess, pick up Saffron Yellow, take out excess and dry-brush highlights on each section. Pick up more Saffron Yellow and repeat, keeping it brightest in the lightest areas; repeat, picking up more Saffron Yellow and only applying this to the front sections; pick up Antique White in dirty brush and add more highlight, only to front sections; repeat, picking up more Antique White and applying only to center three sections. Wipe brush on dry paper towel, pick up Spiced Pumpkin to temper brush, pick up Antique Green and dry-brush, beginning at bottom of each section and pulling up; repeat, picking up Avocado in dirty brush; repeat, picking up Evergreen in darkest areas only. Float Burnt Orange to separate sections and at back next to stem. Beginning at bottom of sections, float a brush-mix of Spiced Pumpkin + Dark 2

4 Chocolate (approx. 1:1) lightly over the Burnt Orange, but not moving up as far. Also shade with this mix at bottom left and bottom; repeat, using Dark Chocolate, fading as you move up. Repeat, using Purple Rain. Reflected light is a light float of Avocado Dip. Stem: Base Antique Green. Using dry 1/4 highlighter pick up Avocado Dip, take out excess, and apply to lightest areas on stem (very left, then the right sides of each section) and at bottom of cut end; repeat, picking up Spicy Mustard in dirty brush; repeat, adding more Spicy Mustard; repeat, adding Antique White and only using on two left section and at bottom of cut end. Shade to separate sections, under cut end, at bottom next to pumpkin except very left, and at top of cut end with Avocado; repeat, using a brush-mix of Avocado + Dark Chocolate (approx. 1:1); repeat, using Purple Rain. Just tip the very tips of the top of cut end with a side-load of Avocado Dip. Gourd: Undercoat with True Ochre; base top section with a brush-mix of Saffron Yellow + Spicy Mustard (approx. 1:1) and bottom section Avocado. Add thin lines with Antique White. Using dry 1/4 highlighter pick up Avocado, take out excess, pick up Avocado Dip and apply highlight, in a circular area, beginning at center of area (this is only on the lower green portion) and using less pressure to blend into background at edges; repeat, picking up more Avocado Dip; add more Avocado Dip; repeat, picking up Spicy Mustard; repeat, picking up Antique White and add just to very center of area also add this highlight to yellow area. Add more Antique White as necessary to be seen. Shade all around yellow area with a brush-mix of Spiced Pumpkin + Dark Chocolate (approx. 1:1), making the float wider at the bottom; you may want to do this step twice. Add Dark Chocolate shading at bottom only. Shade around green area with Evergreen. Add Dark Chocolate shading at bottom only. Add Purple Rain float to bottom of each area. Reflected light is a light float of Avocado Dip. 3 Bittersweet: Branches: Add a liner of Dark Chocolate. Add highlights with a hit-and-miss brush-mix of Dark Chocolate + Antique White

5 (approx. 2:1, but add more-or-less of each color to be seen). Add shadow in the same manner with Soft Black. Leaves: Using #6 filbert, pick up Antique Green, then side-load one side in Saffron Yellow and the other in Evergreen, blend slightly and add to branches, beginning at base at branch and pulling out one-stroke leaves. I only did this step once as I just wanted a hint of leaves. Berries: Base Spiced Pumpkin with #2 round. Shade around berry with Burnt Orange, making it wider at bottom. Pick up Dark Chocolate on dirty brush and add more shading at bottoms only. Float Purple Rain at the bottom of each berry and the base of just some of the leaves. Using liner and a brush-mix of Spiced Pumpkin + Antique White (approx. 1:1, but adjust color as necessary), add a highlight dot to each berry. Reflected light on some berries is Avocado Dip. Finishing: Using 3/4 wash brush, float Soft Black around entire design, over the bittersweet branches and berries this will push them into the background. You may need to do this step more than once. Bands: Using dry 1/2 highlighter, apply Antique Green to two narrow bands; pick up Avocado Dip and brush on center areas only; pick up Evergreen and add to sides. Apply Avocado to wide band at bottom; pick up Avocado Dip and brush on center area only; pick up Evergreen and add to sides; pick up Dark Chocolate and add more shading to all bands. When dry, finish with DecoArt DuraClear Soft Touch Varnish. 4
