We keep you updated with EHG news initiatives and features on our people who work hard behind the scenes. 9 HIGHLIGHTS Against a backdrop of Hanoi s vibrant, pulsating and energetic Old Quarter EHG s latest property in the La Siesta Classic range is set to open in early La Siesta Classic Hang Be, with its elegantly dignified white façade, embodies classic charm with Indochina touches, traditional features and period furnishings. On the mezzanine level La Spa, with its six treatment rooms, provides luxury pampering for the body, mind and soul, while EHG s flagship restaurant brand Red Bean, on the 9th floor accommodating 60 covers, leads to the rooftop Lighthouse Sky Bar. The essence of what makes La Siesta Classic Hang Be rather special is twofold. Firstly, the incorporation of as much external landscaping as possible within the architectural design. The overall effect is a tranquil environment with plants, shrubs and miniature trees overhanging the maze of old streets. It conjures up a feeling of being close to nature within the city. The second feature is the cutting-edge Lighthouse Sky Bar with views over Hoan Kiem Lake and the Red River. Designed in the style of a boat, complete with its own lighthouse, makes this one of Hanoi s most original rooftop bars. 10 MEET THE PEOPLE EHG CHAIRMAN MR DO VAN DAN LOOKS BACK ON 2018 & WHAT EHG S IMMEDIATE PLANS ARE FOR 2019 WHAT HAS BEEN THE MAIN FOCUS DURING 2018? 2018 has been a year of major initiatives relating to rebranding and consolidation. Firstly, the structure is now in place as we launch our new upscale La Siesta brand across three clear categories - Premium, Classic and Trendy. This clarifies the brand positioning, hotels in each category embody the atmosphere and design of that category. Secondly our award winning La Siesta Spa has been rebranded and relaunched as La Spa giving it a more independent identity while still clearly aligned with EHG. Our third rebrand sees The Gourmet Corner restaurant join the Red Bean ranks as it becomes known as Red Bean Lo Su. This brings us to the Red Bean name; now each branch is named after its location ie. Red Bean Ma May, Red Bean Cau Go and so on. 10 LA SIESTA MAGAZINE

11 MEET THE PEOPLE Last year our second sky bar opened the Diamond Sky Bar at La Siesta Lo Su. Through a clever design concept, the hotel s rooftop was transformed into three overlapping terraces giving 360 degree views of Hanoi. TEAMWORK MAKES LA SIESTA RESORT A GREAT PLACE TO WORK EHG NEVER STANDS STILL. WHAT IS IN THE PIPELINE FOR 2019? 2019 is an important year of expansion for EHG. Early this year our latest hotel in the classic range opens - La Siesta Classic Hang Be. It has 50 guestrooms and suites, Red Bean Hang Be, La Spa and an ingeniously designed rooftop bar, which undoubtedly will be a modern iconic symbol in the Old Quarter. The Lighthouse Sky Bar is modeled on a boat and comes with its own lighthouse. The other important factor is we have incorporated plentiful greenery, plants and flowers in the hotel s external architecture bringing nature to our guests. Mid-year sees the opening of a third wing as our Hoi An resort expands to meet guest demand. There will be 30 new guest suites and a third pool as well as extended tropical gardens. DANG THI ANH NU GENERAL CASHIER - LA SIESTA PREMIUM HOI AN 6 YEARS OF SERVICE As a student at the University of Economics - University of Da Nang, Nu supported her studies by working as a cashier at Tran Restaurant in Da Nang. Although her original plan was to work in a government agency, fate took her down the hospitality route. Her first job was as an accountant at the Marina Resort & Spa in Hoi An. She was born in Thanh Ha pottery village in 1986, where she lives with her husband and 3-year old son. In early 2013 on her way to work she would pass a building under construction in Hung Vuong Street a few km from Thanh Ha. Curious, she discovered through a friend this was EHG s soon to open La Siesta Resort & Spa. She successfully applied for a job as General Cashier and has worked at the resort ever since June Her 6 years continues to be a happy positive time. She values her friendly open-minded colleagues and acknowledges the management s caring attitude contributing to her optimistic outlook and personal development. The resort feels like her second home. She has many special memories including one in particular. It was a few years ago during heavy floods in Hoi An. She comments on how hard all the staff worked to support one another during this difficult period. As to the future she wants to further her studies, to work harder and master her skills thereby helping her to contribute even further to EHG s success. LA SIESTA MAGAZINE 11

13 03 LA SIESTA CLASSIC LO SU MOST FRIENDLY STAFF - EVER! We were five ladies, all well-traveled and felt lucky to have chosen La Siesta classic Lo Su. The hotel is in an excellent location, close to everything but it was the staff that made our visit so special. Nothing was too much trouble for them and they made our holiday outstanding. Added to that the accommodation and food were superb and the spa treatment wonderful plus the rooftop bar with a panoramic view of the city to enjoy a drink. We will definitely be back! Everything was perfect from the moment we landed at the airport and were met by hotel transfer. The staff could not do enough for us, were so friendly and helpful, especially Scarlet. The accommodation was large and comfortable the food great and the hotel is in an excellent location, superb in every way. 20 CUISINE BÁNH KHÚC Regarded as the unofficial symbol of Vietnam and considered a gift from God, rice is the nation s sacred commodity and main staple food. Even the country s outline pays homage to white gold, one of the country s nicknames for rice. The Vietnamese say their country resembles two rice baskets at each end of a pole. One of many types of rice is glutinous/sticky rice which is the basis of a traditional Hanoi specialty called bánh khúc. This is a savory soft mung bean dumpling infused with the distinctive aroma and flavor of khúc (cudweed). It is made by steaming and mixing the leaves with rice flour to form a dough, wrapped around a ball of green bean paste mixed with pork and a little pepper. The resulting dumpling is rolled in a sticky rice coating and steamed. Bánh khúc sellers peddle their wares, which are kept warm and served hot, day and night. Cudweed grows along the edges of rice fields and is in season during the January and February lunar months making bánh khúc a popular early lunar new year snack. 21 CUISINE Bánh bèo originates from Hue and is one of the city s most traditional dishes. It is popular throughout central Vietnam, especially in Quang Nam and Quang Ngai although the dish is widely enjoyed throughout the country. The name of the dish refers to its shape. Bánh loosely means cake and bèo means duckweed. Hence, the dish is likened to rounded duckweed and therefore in English is referred to as bloated water fernshaped cake. Bánh bèo is made from a combination of a rice flour and tapioca starch cake topped with a variety of ingredients. A topping of pork and shrimp is typical of the Da Nang/Quang Nam region. During the French colonial period the street was known by its French name, Rue des Radeaux (radeaux means rafts). 34 DESTINATION HANOI HANOI THE LITTLE PARIS OF ASIA UNIQUE FRENCH ARCHITECTURE ADAPTED FOR THE LOCAL ORIENTAL STYLE OF LIVING HAS BECOME A CHARACTERISTIC OF THOUSAND-YEAR- OLD HANOI Hanoi s architecture is a mix of domestic and foreign influences, most notably French, which blend harmoniously with traditional Vietnamese architecture. During the French colonial period from 1873 up to France s defeat in 1954 Hanoi was transformed in almost every way from urban planning, politics and written script to entertainment, health, fashion, cuisine and so on. The French authorities redesigned the city as they laid out a Haussmann-style imitation of Paris. Broad, straight, tree-lined streets in a grid-like pattern were put in place, public parks and squares, colonial-style villas, European style cafes and institutions gave Hanoi a new identity. Where there had been urban disorder the French set out to give the city a new dynamic identity and improved the environment. The new face of Hanoi included some of most iconic buildings inspired by the French: 34 LA SIESTA MAGAZINE

35 DESTINATION HANOI Hanoi Opera House. A smaller-scale version of the Opera Garnier in Paris. Constructed between 1901 and 1911, it is designed in theater style, based on classical buildings in Renaissance Europe. It remains today one of Hanoi s most highly regarded treasures. The Metropole Hotel was Hanoi s first 5-star hotel opening in It is built in the style of the French colonial period with white walls, green window frames, delicate ironwork tracery and a green lawn. The Presidential Palace (formerly the Governor General s Palace) designed by Auguste-Henri Vildieu between covers an area of 20 hectares taking pride of place to the side of Ba Dinh Square. Dong Xuan Market, one of Hanoi s most iconic and largest Old Quarter markets dating back to 1889 was designed by the French company Poinsard Veyret. It is a simple design of five blocks each with domes, the stunning front entrance is entirely due to the French influence with its five sculpted triangular arches arranged as a honeycomb with metal roofing. Saint Joseph s Cathedral built in 1886 closely resembles Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. It is in the Gothic European style popular in the Renaissance. 36 DESTINATION HANOI TET TIPS Governed by tradition, taboos and legends, Tet Nguyen Dan welcomes the Lunar New Year and spring s arrival. People honor their ancestors and make offerings at family altars. Custom dictates that actions and thoughts at the start of the lunar New Year influence one s fate and prosperity for the coming 12 months. A number of factors, which could impact on a trip to Vietnam during Tet, should be taken into account as this is the nation s most important festival and major six/seven-day public holiday. Significant religious sites such as the Perfume Pagoda and Bai Dinh Pagoda become inundated with Vietnamese visitors. While this is an interesting local experience it also signals travel nightmares, congested roads and jam packed sites. 36 LA SIESTA MAGAZINE

37 DESTINATION HANOI At Tet people visit families and pay their respects to the ancestors. As such, many businesses close over the three official days of Tet. These include museums, family run restaurants, banks, state enterprises etc., while opening hours of numerous tourist sites will vary during this period. Public services are limited and/or extremely crowded with a high volume of domestic travelers. Tickets for trains, planes, intercity buses sell out well in advance while prices rise steeply, sometimes by as much as 30%. While Tet is a good time for shopping, with reasonable prices, as sellers want to start the new year off well, one should avoid aggressive bargaining which is considered to bring bad luck for the year. An important tradition to take note of is Vietnamese people believe that the first person to visit one s home on New Year s Day dictates the coming year s fortunes. Therefore, this individual should be successful with a good character and moral values. One should not visit Vietnamese families on this day unless invited to. On the plus side, on the first day of Tet one has the luxury of enjoying normally noisy and crowded places, such as Hanoi s Old Quarter, in complete peace. 38 DESTINATION HANOI BLOOMING HANOI AT TET Cho Hoa Quang An (Quang An flower market in Tay Ho district) is Hanoi s largest and best known flower market. It takes on a special significance during the Tet Lunar New Year period when it transforms into a giant garden full of energy and vibrant colors. People visit not only to buy flowers but also to enjoy the whole experience and happy atmosphere. One needs to be an early riser to catch the flower market at its best. It opens between 03:00 and 04:00 when florists select the best blooms to sell in their shops during the day. Individual customers also buy flowers for their homes and work places. In particular, over Tet flowers play a very important role in ancestor worship when families place them as offerings in pagodas, temples and communal houses. Flowers sold at the market (loose or in readymade arrangements and bouquets) come from Hanoi s outer suburbs and as far away as Da Lat 1,400km away. Almost every type of flower is found here - including cherry blossom, lilies, 38 LA SIESTA MAGAZINE

39 DESTINATION HANOI roses, carnations, orchids, chrysanthemums, tulips, hydrangeas, sunflowers, Gerber daisies and so on. Often sellers specialize in one type of flower, making it easier to make a choice. However, two species sold have a deep and poignant significance at Tet. Peach blossom heralds the arrival of spring while the Kumquat tree signifies reunion both these elements underpin the meaning of Tet. The weather is significantly cooler at this time of year so people wrap up warmly as they wander among the colorful flower displays. Everyone, young and old, loves the atmosphere that pervades this flower market. Motorbike riders dodge in and out of the displays as they drive away with bunches of flowers strapped to the back of their bikes.

The morning of the first day of Tet families exchange greetings while traditionally the elders and young children receive red envelopes containing lucky money. The family drink tea together and eat candid fruits and various seeds. Four different cakes, particular to Hoi An and the region, are eaten - Banh Tet and Banh To commemorate the ancestors while Banh In and Banh No signify good luck in the New Year. Also of great significance is the First Footer the person who brings either good or bad luck to the host family, so the choice of person who visits one s home first is extremely important. Over the Tet holiday smartly dressed families visit places of worship and ancestor s graves, making offerings and praying for peace and prosperity in the New Year. After that they will visit relatives and friends, in order of seniority - grandparents first down to friends and neighbors.
