Doomsday theorists believe that a solar flare or CME will knock out the power grid toppling civilization; or, a galactic alignment will cause catastrophic earthquakes and volcanic eruptions on the magnitude of an extinction event. But, hopefully, all that s going to happen, is there will probably be a minor panic on Wall Street on Friday; and a run on my emergency power packs. 21 by Tony C Now that the turkey leftovers are finally gone (and before you cook another one), you need to feed the army of invading relatives and friends that trample in and out of the house this time of year. Sure you can set up a buffet of dip and chips, veggies, meats and cheeses, and various home-made salads, cookies and family favorites. Or, if money is no object, you can put out a spread of Sushi from Martins, Giant Eagle or Sinobi Express. Personally, I like the idea of just going to a restaurant/bar with a crew of people and having an impromptu Christmas party there and let them deal with everything. But when you don t want to go out of the house, or dice and slice and chop and prep, there s no better (inexpensive) crowdpleaser than pizza (yeah, really). It s also an easy way to keep the kids busy for awhile True, there s a pizza joint on practically every block in town; however, there are two establishments that stand out in the pizza party arena: Bob s atsa my Pizza on North Fourth Street (an Indiana institution); and Fox s Pizza Den on the corner of 6th and Philadelphia Streets. Both have pepperoni pizza squares in large quantities (see photos top right). Their slices are thick and cheesy. Fox s delivers; Bob s is pickup but I recommend you definitely try both. For under 20 you can get a couple of dozen yes, I said a couple of dozen slices and feast out with the whole gang. On the other hand, if you decide to take a bunch of family, friends and/or coworkers out, consider going to one of our Holiday Happy Hours (see page 7). We ll be playing Christmas Music, giving out prizes, and of course there will be drink specials. All you have to do is show up after work or shopping and have a grand time. 26 26 Cheers! Calling All Beer Lovers to Reporting & Drinking Beer in Indiana & Beyond! Beer for the Holidays Legend has it that the word bock of bockbier may be derived the town of Einbeck where these strong, typically seasonal beers were first brewed during the Middle Ages. Other theories associate bock with the German word for billy goat or even the Zodiac s Capricorn (a symbol of the winter months) thus explaining the traditional popularity of the animal on signs and labels. Bocks come in different varieties and at different times of year, making them a drink for celebration or a means to get through a rough time such as Lenten and Advent fasts, as a sort of liquid meal. Believe it or not, bocks boast a higher nutritional content! You may be familiar with a double or, dopplebock which is malty and, at minimum, 7% ABV. When the temperature drops in a dopplebock s lagering tank, what ultimately results is the sweet and even stronger Eisbock. But of course, this being December, we have to mention the Weihnachtsbock or Christmas bock. And the king of Christmas bocks regionally is Penn Brewery s St. Nikolaus. Lush and chocolaty with a 6.5% ABV, it was the highest rated bock of 2004 by National Beverage institute. Penn will also be offering its companion, St. Nik Brewer s Special Reserve, a 2011 silver medal winner as a German- A fine beer may be judged with only one sip, but it s better to be thoroughly sure. by Samuel A. If you don t like a strong hops flavor, you may enjoy bocks, particularly the ones mentioned here. The taste is minimal to non-existant. But the bock drinker is advised to handle even the lightest variety with care due to their high alcohol content. If you want to dip a toe in the water (so to speak) with Penn s seasonal beers and think the bock may be a bit much, consider their new Nut Roll Ale. Weighing in at 5.5%, Nut Roll Ale is described as redolent with cinnamon, vanilla and nutty character. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus. And how dreary the world has become. Generosity has been replaced with greed; and love has been reduced to a temporary means to an end. I know, in this day and age, it sounds a bit hokey; but it really shouldn t. Personally, I like the way Bill and Ted put it, be excellent to each other. The real joy is in giving that s the spirit of this holiday season. Whatever your background, religion or station in life; we are all human well, at least it would be nice if we could act that way to each other.
