Graduated 1984 from WMU in OT, work at Ingham ISD in Early On Program. Mom of 3 teenagers. Naturopath in 2007 do not prescribe, treat, cure, or diagnosis, only educate & empower. Naturopaths look at cause rather than symptoms. Use natural ways ( Food, herbs, homeopathy, essential oils) to bring body back in balance.
Understand the difference between food allergies and food intolerances. Understand how the digestive system works and how it sets the stage for illness. Learn how food effects behavior. Learn how to become a food detective. Gain strategies to help families navigate their child s diet. Provide resources on food choices and supplements.
Industrial Revolution - began processing foods for economics and mass production. Processed foods 70% of what Americans eat. 5,000 different chemicals allowed into foods. 400 different chemicals found in umbilical cord blood. Smaller the body mass - the more the liver/kidneys need to detoxify.
Any food that has been taken from the original source. Anything in a box, can, or package has preservatives, coloring, additives, hydrogenated oils, high fructose corn syrup, and GMO s. Read label if can t pronounce it, or long list of ingredients then AVOID it. Foods are best when close to original source or one ingredient apple versus applesauce.

Billions of bacteria live in gut balance between healthy/unhealthy bacteria influence behavior. Neurotransmitter 85% serotonin made in gut. Immunity 70% immune cells in gut. Gut permeability leaky gut syndrome impact food sensitivities.
Food Allergies histamine reaction. Tends to be an immediate response such as hives or respiratory reaction. Can be life threatening, causing anaphylaxis reaction and requires epi pen. Top allergic foods peanuts, soy, shellfish, fish, wheat, milk, eggs, treenuts. Food allergies 50% rise from Food Intolerances delayed response that can accumulate over time. Seen in behaviors, skin, sleep, etc. Will often not show up in blood tests. Often crave food sensitive to.
Poor diet nutritional deficiency or irritant, lacking vitamins/minerals from processed foods. Yeast overgrowth and gut permeability overuse of antibiotics leading to Leaky Gut Syndrome. Food Sensitivities food becomes foreign causing inflammation and irritant to nervous system. Gluten/Casein proteins opiate affect in brain causing addictive quality to food. Inflammation cause mucous causing ear infections, congestion, and respiratory issues. Inflammation and yeast overgrowth skin rash
Hyperactivity/restless/poor attention Impulsiveness/aggressive/irritability Crave food/narrow food choices Poor regulation of sleep/eating Skin rashes eczema Sick often ear infections/congestion Pale, dark circles under eyes Digestive issues-bloating,constipation, gas, diarrhea, fowl smelling bowel movement. Spitting up GERD

Food journal one week (look for food patterns). What foods do they crave? Do they have digestive problems around eating certain food? Does behavior change 20 minutes after? Ask about bowel movements smell, consistency, constipation or diarrhea. Are they always congested or frequent ear infections? When did problems start? Has there been a history of antibiotics?
Hyperactivity sensitivity to artificial colors/sugars. Undeveloped blood brain barrier makes more sensitive to chemicals. Plan: buy organic, avoid high fructose corn syrup, fructose. Moodiness gluten intolerance linked to poor digestion. Will often crave problem food. Plan: eliminate gluten for one month. Eczema/itchy skin rash reaction to combination of gluten, casein, eggs, & citrus fruits. Plan: blood test may detect histamine response. Take out gluten/casein for one month. Small stature/picky eater gluten sensitivity/zinc deficiency. Gluten interferes with nutrient absorption, zinc normalizes appetite. Plan: eliminate gluten for 1 month, blood test for zinc.
Spitting up Intolerance to casein (dairy protein), can turn into chronic ear infections or constipation. Plan: Take out milk first, then all other dairy. Add probiotics. Ear infections dairy/soy intolerance. Fluid in ears related to foods, causing inflammation. Leads to PE tubes. Plan: Take out dairy and soy. Digestive issues intolerance to gluten (wheat protein)and lactose(milk sugar). Yogurt/cheese ok. Plan: Take out milk first, then wheat - takes 1-3 months to clear.
Remove suspected food and replace with healthier option switch cow milk gradually to almond/coconut milk/rice milk. Avoid soy (GMO). Slowly switch processed foods to higher quality processed food with no high fructose corn syrup/hydrogenated oils. Gradually move toward whole foods. If can t take out foods add supplement and hide in smoothie/applesauce/yogurt. Food you eat most change to higher quality. Organic foods whenever can Dirty dozen/clean fifteen.
Dirty dozen most pesticides, buy organic. (apples, celery, cherry, tomatoes, cucumbers, grapes, sweet peppers, nectarines, peaches, potatoes, spinach, strawberries). Clean 15 least amount of pesticides, no need to buy organic. (asparagus, avocado, cabbage, cantaloupe, corn, eggplant, grapefruit, kiwi, mangos, mushrooms, onions, papayas, peas, sweet potatoes.
Multi-vitamin food based. Liquid absorbs the best. Fish oil/cod Liver oil/flax seed feeds brain/high omega 3 fats and vitamin D. Probiotics good bacteria for gut. Look for 3-10 billion and 5-8 strands. Plant Enzymes helps to break down food/gas and bloating. Take at beginning of meal. Glutamine amino acid that helps repair damaged gut. Needed only if have leaky gut.
Only do one thing at a time. Go SLOW!!!!!! If can t take food out add supplement in small amounts and gradually build it in. See an OT sensory diet after diet changes. EVERYONE is on continuum. Celebrate progress and keep building.
