Buck, Pheasants Forever Farm Bill Biologist What it is: Callery Pear (Pyrus calleryana) is a small tree native to China. Since the 1950s, the first and most popular cultivar, Bradford, has been heavily utilized in landscaping. Many other cultivars and hybrids, such as Cleveland Select, were later created. All the cultivars were marketed as self-sterile, or unable to produce fruit and reproduce. To some extent, that was true. A Bradford can t reproduce with A Callery Pear another Bradford. However, once Bradford and Cleveland Select trees were planted near each other, they cross-pollinated and created fruit with fertile seeds. The trees that grew from those seeds are the original wild type Callery Pear and are most definitely not sterile! Why it is so bad: The seeds from the cross-pollinated Callery Pear cultivars were spread by wildlife and birds that ate the fruit. Seedlings grew in areas they had not been intentionally planted. Because Callery Pears leaf out earlier in the spring, and flower and produce fruit at a young age, they are able to out-compete the native vegetation. This impacts not only the native Callery Pear seedlings take over an un-mowed area. plants, but also all the native wildlife, including insects and pollinators, that rely on the native plants. Annual Native Perennial Flower Sale Tuesday, June 18th, 2019 from 9:00am - 4:00pm Montgomery SWCD office With your help, many native perennial flowers, along with some native shrubs and prairie grasses, have found new homes in the community. Thank you! This donation-based event has been a wonderful benefit to the homeowners who take home plants, as well as to the resident pollinators, birds, butterflies and other small wildlife! In addition to the plants themselves being volunteer seedlings, this event is truly all about volunteers! It has been volunteers who have come and helped transplant the seedlings, care for the plants as they wait for their new homes, and help make sure the sale runs smoothly. If you would be interested in joining the volunteer force that makes this event a success, please call Kristen Lauer for details and to set up a time. Then, tell your friends, come out to the sale, and take some of the plants home! THE CONSERVATION Plants for the 2018 sale ADVOCATE

3 The Invasive Callery Pear Continued from Page 1 The Callery Pear was officially listed by the Ohio Department of Agriculture as an Invasive Species on Dec. 28, 2017, followed by a Callery Pear flowers, fruit and bark. 5-year grace period until it will no longer be legal to sell it in Ohio. However, some natural areas are already so over-run with it that it will take serious effort to get it in check. The first issue that needs dealt with is all of the trees planted along city streets and on private property. Those mature trees are now producing many, many seeds. Leaving those trees so birds and wildlife can spread their seeds far and wide may very well lead to an ecological disaster in all the neighboring city parks, Metroparks, private lands, Nature Preserves, State Parks, etc. The second issue will be controlling the young wild populations. What good land stewards can do about it: Not everyone can go out and cut down all the cultivar and wild Callery Pears today, tomorrow, or even next week. This will be a long process. I understand that this problem impacts a lot of people, cities, parks, and prairies. We do however need to understand that Callary Pears are an issue and make a plan for the future! The Montgomery SWCD has done just that regarding the six Bradford Pears planted over 20 years ago along their drive. Last fall native Tulip Poplars and Sugar Maples were planted as replacements. The Bradford Pear adults will be removed soon. If you have Callery Pear cultivars that you would like to replace, there are some great native alternatives! They include: American plum (Prunus americana), Flowering dogwood (Cornus florida), Serviceberry (Amelanchier spp.), Eastern redbud (Cercis canadensis), and Hawthorn (Crataegus spp.). If you have a wild feral population running amok on your property, we are happy to help with advice and technical assistance! We re a Local Sponsor for LAEPP Farmland is a necessary part of agriculture. The Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) has worked through an easement program to preserve farmland since More than 450 farms totaling over 73,000 acres in 59 counties have been preserved. The Montgomery SWCD is proud to be a Local Sponsor for this program, the Local Agricultural Easement Purchase Program (LAEPP). Through it, farmland owners are provided funding to place an agricultural easement on their property. The easement is a voluntary and legally binding restriction placed on a farm that will forever protect the farmland from development. The Montgomery SWCD would love to work with you to protect your farm. For more information, please contact Office Secretary Holly Buchanan or visit the ODA website at Look for the Farmland Preservation tab under Programs. A Montgomery County farm in the LAEPP program.
