Davilla papyracea Aymard, a new species with vaginate and winged petioles, from the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil is described and illustrated, and a key to this group of species is provided. While examining specimens of Dilleniaceae for a Flora Neotropica monograph, a new species from Brazil was recognized. This new species is known only from the Atlantic forest of the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais, and is the fifth species of this genus so far discovered which has vaginate and winged petioles. Davilla papyracea Aymard sp. nov. Davillae alatae (Vent.) Briq. et D. steyermarkii Kubitzki, congeneribus sectionis Homalochlenae Kubitzki valde affinis, sed petiolis vaginatis necnon pubescentia aurea ferrugineaque omnino plantam vestiente D. alatae ex Guianis atque Amapai in Brasilia magis pr6xima. A D. steyermarkii et D. alata foliis, petioli alis bracteolisque papyraceis, alis 7-14 mm longis, sepalis interioribus extus sparse adpresso-pubescentibus, staminibus praesentibus differt. Typus: Brazil. Minas Gerais, P M. Andrade & M. A. Lopes 168 (holotypus BHCH!, isotypus PORT!). Lianas; branches and branchlets robust, covered by yellow adpressed trichomes when young, sparsely adpressed-pubescent when mature; bark yellow, flaking off when mature. Leaves chartaceous-papyraceous, ovate, ovate-elliptic, x 5-11 cm, apex obtuse, mucronulate, base obtuse, smooth, lamina glabrous and papillose on upper surface, except along midrib, the midrib canaliculate and adpressed yellow-pubescent, sparsely adpressed-pubescent on lower surface except along midrib and secondary nerves, which are more adpressed-pubescent, margins not revolute, ciliolate, entire to subsinuate; secondary nerves 26-34, running straight towards margin, impressed on upper surface, raised on lower surface; petiole cm long, canaliculate, vaginate, wings papyraceous, 7-14 mm wide, densely yellow adpressed-pubescent externally, glabrescent internally. Inflorescence paniculate, 3-4 cm long; rachis and pedicels adpressed yellow pubescent, pedicel 3-5 cm long, bracteole ovate, 4-7 mm long, papyraceous, sparsely adpressed-pubescent externally, glabrous internally. Sepals 5, unequal, suborbicular, glabrous internally, sparsely adpressed yellow-pubescent externally, the exterior sepals 3, 6-10 mm long, the interior sepals 2, coriaceous, compressed at margin, cm long. Stamens 40-60, filaments 5-6 mm long, glabrous, anthers oblong, coma 1 mm long, glabrous; Carpels 2, glabrous, not lenticellate, styles 2, 8-10 mm long, glabrous, stigma capitate. Fruits not seen. LOCAL NAME. "Cip6 Carij6" (Portuguese). HABITAT. Atlantic forest region. NOTES. Because the margins of the inner sepals are adpressed against each other to form alate margins, Davilla papyracea belongs to section Homalochlaena (Kubitzki 1971). The vaginate petioles and golden and ferrugineous pubescence on all parts of the plant suggest that this new species is most closely related to D. alata (Vent.) Briq. from the Guianas and Amapai, Brazil and D. steyermarkii Kubitzki from the Venezuelan-Brazilian border (Kubitzki 1980; Aymard 1998). Davilla papyracea can be distinguished from other species with vaginate and winged petioles by several characters, as summarised in the following key.
