Acer campestre BAIlee First Editions Jade Patina Hedge Maple F Upright oval FALL 12 Yellow 5-7 Discovered in western Ohio by Mike Lee, this sport of hedge maple has leaves that are more deeply lobed than the species, similar to an Acer griseum. It was selected for its cold tolerance, after an exceptionally cold winter, and was not affected by frost cracking, which can adversely affect the species. An adaptable tree which will tolerate dry soils and severe pruning. Acer ginnala Amur Maple - Tree Form FALL Rounded Medium green Scarlet 3-7 This tree has a graceful, irregular shape formed by slender spreading branches. Extremely hardy, it is an excellent xeriscape plant, and offers outstanding fall color. Amur Maple does not store well over winter. In order to insure viability of plants, these trees are dug in spring, resulting in a later shipping date than our fall dug trees. Acer ginnala Embers Embers Amur Maple - Tree Form FALL Rounded Medium green Scarlet 3-7 A great xeriscape plant, this outstanding Amur Maple was selected by BaileFy Nurseries for its bright red fruit and exceptional scarlet fall color. Like our other ginnalas, Embers is dug in spring, resulting in a later shipping date for these bareroot trees than our fall dug stock. Acer griseum Paperbark Maple FALL Upright oval Green Green/red/brown 5-7 This small tree has rich red-brown exfoliating bark that is beautiful all year long, especially in winter when accentuated by snow. Fall color of the small, trifoliate leaves will vary from year to year. A slow growing tree, it is well worth the wait. Have patience. Acer miyabei Morton State Street Maple FALL Pyramidal Medium green Yellow 4-9 From the Morton Arboretum in Illinois. Ascending branches and a very uniform, broad-pyramidal habit. Attractive medium green foliage, good resistance to leaf tatter. Fall color is soft, buttery to golden yellow depending on temperature and site. Excellent adaptability and stress tolerance in regards to heat, drought, salt and pollution. The branching structure is also much improved. Foliage is a pleasant medium green in summer, and changes to a lovely bright red color in autumn. Zone 5-6, also shown to do well in zone 4b. Acer palmatum var. atropurpureum Redleaf Japanese Maple FALL Broad, rounded Red-purple Bright red 5-8 A seedling form of Japanese red maple. Highly valued for its fl exibility in the landscape. The color and form make Japanese maples magnifi cent specimens and accent plants. Also attractive in the shrub border and widely used as bonsai. Prefers a moist yet well-drained soil, high in organic matter. Protect from wind and late spring frost as young foliage is cold sensitive. Dappled shade is best. Acer palmatum Bloodgood Bloodgood Japanese Maple FALL Rounded Burgundy-red Red 5-8 Red Emperor sets a new standard for red-leaf Japanese maples. The new growth is deep purple-red and it holds that color exceptionally well throughout the summer. Fall foliage turns a rich crimson. It leafs out about two weeks later than other Japanese maples giving it the benefi t of less spring frost damage. Graceful form and brilliant color, works well as a focal point in the urban landscape. 5 Trees Acer palmatum var. dissectum Tamukeyama Tamukeyama Japanese Cut Leaf Maple FALL Cascading Purple red Bright red 5-8 Acer platanoides Deborah Deborah Maple FALL Broadly oval Red turning to dk bronze-green Bronze-yellow A small weeping/cascading tree with multi-dissected, deep-crimson leaves. Leaves are not as deeply cut as other dissectum varieties giving it a bolder, more robust appearance. Autumn brings fi ery scarlet tones. Plant as a focal point in the garden. May also be planted in patio containers. Cascading effect is especially lovely on the ponds edge. NORWAY MAPLES Norway Maples and the cultivars of Norway Maple need proper soil conditions for normal growth. Pay special attention to ensure good drainage and aeration. Acer platanoides Norway Maple FALL Rounded Yellow This favorite street and park tree is well adapted to the extremes of urban conditions, including drought and pollution. The rounded crown is quite dense, with lustrous dark green foliage. It is best to wrap the trunk in winter, especially when the tree is young. Acer platanoides Columnare Columnar Norway Maple FALL Narrow, columnar Deep green Yellow Generally free of pests and disease, and resistant to wind damage, this is the most practical columnar tree for northern regions. The attractive dark green foliage changes to a nice yellow in fall. The columnar form is perfect for street use, accents or formal plantings. Acer platanoides Crimson King Crimson King Maple FALL Oval Rich purple The dense foliage of this slow growing shade tree remains an excellent maroon-red all season long. Spring flowers of attractive maroon and yellow are a bonus. This cultivar, known for its straight trunk and well-shaped head, originated as a seedling of Schwedleri. Discovered as a Schwedleri seedling in Canada in 1967, this COPF introduction is similar to Schwedler but has a superior branching habit. A vigorous grower with a strong, straight central leader, it has brilliant red spring foliage that turns to dark green through summer. Acer platanoides Crimson Sentry Crimson Sentry Maple FALL Narrow, columnar Deep purple This bud sport of Crimson King has an upright branching habit, with leaves closely spaced along the branches for a very dense appearance. Its slow growth makes it ideal for narrow streets and small yards. The spring foliage is a brighter red than Crimson King. Acer platanoides Pond Emerald Lustre Maple FALL Round oval Glossy green Yellow Introduced by Bailey Nurseries in 1979, this shade tree was selected by Don Pond for its outstanding branching habit, hardiness, and vigor. The immature foliage displays an attractive red tinge before maturing to glossy deep green leaves with a slightly wavy margin. Acer platanoides Princeton Gold Princeton Gold Maple FALL Oval Bright golden-yellow Yellow This attractive Norway selection makes a stunning accent plant in the landscape. The foliage is bright golden yellow, especially when young, and the color holds well through the summer. 6 Trees Acer platanoides Royal Red Royal Red Maple FALL Broadly oval Maroon red, glossy This Norway maple selection is similar to Crimson King, but with a somewhat slower growth rate and what some consider slightly better color. A dense shade tree, it has a straight trunk with a well-shaped canopy. The glossy foliage is an excellent maroon red all season. Acer platanoides Variegatum Variegated Norway Maple FALL Upright, rounded Green with white edge Yellow This Norway selection is an unusual specimen tree that is certain to draw attention. A dense shade tree, it is known for its straight trunk and well-shaped crown, but most notably for its beautiful variegated foliage. Leaves are green with an attractive creamy white margin. Acer pseudosieboldianum Korean Maple FALL Rounded Yellow, orange, red For those of us in northern climates, there is fi nally an alternative to Japanese maples (Acer palmatum). Korean maples are similar enough that we can happily fool ourselves with this hardier substitute. A showy accent plant with palmate leaves, brilliant autumn colors and attractive bark. Prefers cool conditions and won t mind partial shade. RED MAPLES Red Maples prefer a lower ph, acid substrate. While they will grow in somewhat alkaline soils, they will not develop the characteristic beautiful autumn color. 7 Trees Acer rubrum Brandywine Brandywine Maple FALL Oval Medium green Purple red 4-8 Acer rubrum Northwood Northwood Maple FALL Round, oval Bright orange-red 3-8 Brandywine is cross between A. rubrum October Glory and A. rubrum Autumn Flame, and was developed by the U.S. National Arboretum. Only sterile fl owers are produced in spring, thus no fruit or undesirable messy seedlings. The long lasting fall color gradually turns from red to brilliant reddish purple. A medium-sized shade tree with an oval crown and signifi cant leafhopper resistance. Although adaptable to a wide range of conditions, prefers a slightly acidic, moist, well-drained soil. Excellent for lawn, street, highway and park plantings. Own root. Acer rubrum Magnificent Magenta Burgundy Belle Maple FALL Oval to round Medium-dark green Red to burgundy 4-8 A cultivar from Earl Cully, selected in Kansas. The fall color is especially nice, with the leaves initially turning a brilliant red and then changing to an intense burgundy. With an excellent symmetrical branching habit, this is a great choice for street plantings and small landscapes. It also exhibits excellent heat and drought tolerance. Own root. Acer rubrum Olson Northfire Maple FALL Oval Green Brilliant red 3-8 This red maple was selected by Roger Landsburg of Landsburg Landscape and Nursery of Brainerd, Minnesota. It displays good branching habit with brilliant, early fall color we feel is superior to that of Firedance Maple. It also calipers up very nicely. Own root.. The 1994 Leon Snyder Plant of the Year, this selection from northern Minnesota, and released by the University of Minnesota in 1980, has a rounded to oval crown with branches that ascend at approximately a 45 degree angle. Optimum growth, as with all red maples, will occur in moist, slightly acidic soil. Acer rubrum October Glory October Glory Maple FALL Broad, oval Green Crimson red 5-8 This terrifi c red maple is most impressive for its intense crimson red fall color, even under less than perfect circumstances. The color lasts much longer than many other red maples. The wings of the samara display an attractive reddish tinge as well. Own root. Acer rubrum Red Rocket Red Rocket Maple FALL Upright Green Intense red This strongly columnar red maple is a perfect fi t to brighten up smaller landscapes. Relatively short and upright in stature, it makes an excellent street tree for urban areas. Fiery red foliage glows in fall. Introduced by the US National Arboretum from a northern Minnesota selection. Acer rubrum Franksred Red Sunset Maple FALL Upright, dense Bright green, heavy textured Brilliant red This outstanding red maple offers brilliant red autumn color that is retained longer than most other rubrums. Named Iowa Tree of the Year for 2000, it has thick foliage and a dense, upright branching habit that makes it a great choice for street and lawn use. 8 Trees Acer rubrum Bailcraig First Editions Scarlet Jewell Maple 70 F 30 Upright FALL 06 Crimson 3-7 From Bailey Nurseries and First Editions, selected in northern Minnesota by Terry Schwartz of Bailey Nurseries. A full, upright maple that turns a consistent deep crimson each fall, a full two weeks earlier than other rubrum maples. A brilliant show of red fl owers each spring adds to the allure. Excellent symmetrical branching and resistance to frost cracking. Prefers moist, slightly acidic soil. Own root. Acer rubrum Sun Valley Sun Valley Maple FALL Ovate Green Brilliant red Sun Valley was selected by the National Arboretum because of its exceptional fall color and leafhopper resistance. A medium sized tree with an oval crown and symmetrical branching. The fall color is brilliant red and quite long lasting. Only red male fl owers appear in early spring thus producing no seed. Has performed well from Alabama and Georgia to Michigan and Oregon. Own root. Acer saccharum Barrett Cole PP10,590 Apollo Sugar Maple FALL Narrow, columnar Yellow-orange to red The fastest growing species of American maple, this very hardy native combines graceful form, vigorous growth, and tolerance for a variety of extreme conditions. Foliage provides medium shade, and a nice ornamental effect from the silvery undersides of the leaves. Acer saccharinum Silver Queen Silver Queen Maple FALL Upright, oval Light green above, silvery beneath Golden yellow 3-7 Compact columnar selection of sugar maple with symmetrical growth and dense branching, ideal for limited spaces. Deep green foliage of summer turns an intense array of brilliant orange, red and golden yellow hues. An excellent selection for use as a street tree or in a small urban garden. This vigorous selection of silver maple has a more upright, oval-rounded form than the species and bright foliage with attractive silvery underside. The fall color is golden yellow. The branching is full and symmetrical. Leathery, glossy, deep green leaves are resistant to leaf tatter and leafhopper damage. A rapid grower, easy to transplant and also resistant to sun scald and frost cracks. Outstanding fall color, shows far more oranges and reds than other sugar maples. Prefers a moist yet well-drained soil with a slight acidity for optimum growth. Acer saccharum Green Mountain Green Mountain Maple FALL Upright oval Orange-scarlet This cultivar has excellent heat tolerance, and performs well in dry, restricted sites. The thick, leathery dark green leaves are covered with a waxy coating, and show good scorch resistance. Green Mountain retains its color in dry windy summer weather. Acer saccharum Jefcan Unity Maple Upright Medium green FALL Yellow, orange-red 3-7 This large shrub/small tree is similar in many respects to Amur maple, Acer ginnala. However, it exhibits much better tolerance of alkalinity and dry conditions. The form is spreading and graceful, and fall color can be quite nice. Samaras are often red and quite showy. Acer tataricum Gar Ann PP15,023 Hot Wings Maple FALL Upright, spreading Yellow to red 3-6 The perfect maple when you don t have room for a tree. The habit is graceful, upright and spreading. The little yellow fl owers are followed by bright red samaras, hence the name Hot Wings. The dark green foliage turns yellow to red giving the fall color expected from a maple. Tolerant of alkalinity and dry conditions. A Colorado Plant Select introduction. Acer x freemanii Jeffersred Autumn Blaze Maple FALL Dense oval head Rich green, deeply lobed Orange-red The fi rst Canadian cultivar of sugar maple selected for the harsh prairie climate, this slow-growing collector tree, with an upright, oval habit is perfect for the residential landscape. Unity has been shown to have excellent resistance to frost cracking. The fall colors range from yellow to orange-red. Prefers full sun to partial shade and well-drained medium textured soils. Developed by Jeffries Nurseries, Ltd., Manitoba. 10 Trees Acer x freemanii AF#1 PP15,593 Firefall Maple FALL Upright, oval Medium green Bright orange to scarlet Firefall has an upright-oval form with good branch angles. This selection is male and therefore does not produce nuisance seeds. The foliage is an attractive medium green throughout the summer. Fall color is bright orange to scarlet and develops fairly early. This is a distinct advantage over some existing Freeman maple cultivars that color later and often do not develop much color in northern regions before freezing temperatures cause the foliage to drop. University of Minnesota introduction. Own root. Acer x freemanii Bailston First Editions Matador Maple FALL Upright oval Green Deep red to orange-red F Discovered in 1997 at our container tree farm by one of our employees, Kevin Johnston. This freemanii cultivar was selected because of its superior habit and fall color. Matador has a deeper red fall color than Autumn Blaze and colors more consistently than Sienna Glen. An adaptable tree with an upright, symmetrical form. Gains its fall color a bit later than other cultivars and holds its leaves longer. Excellent choice for lawn, street or park. Own root. Acer x freemanii Sienna PP11,322 Sienna Glen Maple FALL Pyramidal Green Yellow, orange and red 3-7 A fast growing, hardy maple with uniform branching and a pyramidal form. Tolerant of alkaline, acidic and wet soil conditions. Superior to Autumn Blaze maple in withstanding strong winds. Is considered a very good substitute for ash varieties. Own root. AESCULUS HORSECHESTNUT, BUCKEYE Aesculus glabra Ohio Buckeye FALL Rounded Bright green Yellow orange-red to reddish brown3-7 The palmately compound leaves of this tree are unusual and attractive, especially in the autumn when the fall color is a range of yellows, oranges and reds. Greenish-yellow fl owers are produced on large panicles in spring followed by large light brown fruit capsules GreatPlants for the Great Plains winner. ALNUS ALDER Alnus hirsuta Harbin Prairie Horizon Alder FALL Upright Yellow 3-7 A beautiful alder for diffi cult, dry situations. Selected by the NDSU breeding program, Prairie Horizon has proven to be the most drought tolerant alder in their trials. While it tolerates wet, poorly drained soils, it does well in upland soils, and is resistant to bronze birch borer. Clumps have three or more stems. Voted 2002 Urban Tree of the Year by the Society of Municipal Arborists. Resistant to bronze birch borer, it has nice yellow fall color, and attractive cinnamonbrown exfoliating bark for an interesting winter effect. Before planting, bareroot river birch trees should be sweated. See page 293 for procedure. Clumps have three or more stems. Distinctive variegated foliage, small stature, and slow growth make this river birch an exciting addition for small residential landscapes. The tree may be left untrained to form a mounded shrub or staked to promote a central leader with pendulous branches. Betula papyrifera Paper Birch FALL Loosely pyramidal, rounded at maturity Deep green Excellent yellow 2-7 Parkland Pillar is a selection of Dakota Pinnacle discovered at Parkland Nursery in Alberta and introduced by Jeffries Nurseries. Parkland Pillar is much more narrow, upright, and dense in habit. Known to be a fast growing variety that is perfectly suited as a garden specimen or for screening or boulevards. Tolerant of heat, drought, and alkaline soils, Parkland Pillar s adaptability and conical shape makes it an excellent choice for the urban landscape. Betula populifolia Whitespire Whitespire Birch Seed Source FALL Narrow, pyramidal Glossy dark green Yellow This very hardy birch is the most permanent and desirable of all the white-barked birches. Stems are a beautiful red-brown when immature, a perfect chalk-white when older. Fall color is an outstanding landscape feature. Clumps have three or more stems.
