3 Scarlet Storm is a flowering quince that is noted for producing an early spring bloom of double scarlet red flowers that resemble camellias. This is a dense, broad-rounded, thornless, deciduous shrub that typically grows to 3-4' tall and as wide. Bold scarlet red double flowers (to 2 diameter) bloom, often in profusion, before the leaves fully unfold in an early spring bloom. Plants do not produce fruit. Oval to oblong, glossy dark green leaves. No fall color. Easily grown in average, medium moisture, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. Best flowering occurs in full sun. Adapts to a wide range of soil conditions, but prefers well-drained loams. Established plants will tolerate dryish soils. Plants bloom on old growth. Avoid heavy pruning. 5 1.Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Prepare two 8-inch round cake pans. 2.Grate a large zucchini (or two small zucchini) and place in a clean dish towel. Squeeze until most of the liquid comes out. You will want to have 2 total cups of shredded zucchini after it has been drained. Set aside. 3.In a large bowl and using a hand mixer, beat together the eggs, oil, vanilla, and sugar. Fold in the zucchini. 4.Slowly add in the flour, salt, baking powder, and baking soda. Gently fold in the blueberries. Divide batter evenly between prepared cake pans. 5.Bake minutes in the preheated oven, or until a knife inserted in the center of a cake comes out clean. Cool 20 minutes in pans, then turn out onto wire racks to cool completely. 6.Combine butter, sugar and salt and beat till well combined. 7.Add lemon juice and vanilla and continue to beat for another 3 to 5 minute or until creamy. 8.Fold in zest*. 9.*If you are piping this buttercream, I recommend leaving out the zest This cake is moist! Like amazingly so. But I do recommend eating when it is still warm and the zucchini bits are lounging around the bursting blueberries in a delightful way. 7 If you've got a spot in the yard for something really eye-catching and a little different, consider smoke bush (Cotinus). The colorful foliage of this unusual ornamental is attractive throughout the season, but really heats up in fall, deepening to brilliant shades of purple, red, or orange-yellow, depending on the variety. As the large, loose clusters of tiny greenish flower blossoms fade, the flower stalks get longer and by midsummer are covered with fuzzy purple or pink hairs. These feathery trusses look like puffs of smoke -- hence the common name smoke bush or smoke tree. Even with these showy blossoms and vibrantly colored leaves, smoke bush is an easy plant to work into the landscape because it combines so readily with other perennials. Smoke bush is hardy in virtually all regions of the United States from USDA Hardiness Zone 4a through 11. However, it's most prized in the colder areas where few other plants can compete with its dramatic foliage color. This cross of the European smoke bush ( C. coggygria ) and the American smoke tree ( C. obovatus ) is a gem in the garden thanks to its multiseason interest. Its iridescent spring foliage is green overlaid with red; then its large pink clouds of blooms in summer are followed by brilliant autumn foliage that ranges from red to orange. 8 Physocarpus opulifolius, commonly called ninebark, is an upright, spreading, somewhat coarse, deciduous, Missourinative shrub which is closely related to genus Spiraea. In Missouri, it typically occurs along streams, rocky banks, gravel bars and in moist thickets, especially in counties south of the Missouri River (Steyermark). Grows 5-9 tall (less frequently to 10 ). Noted for its exfoliating bark (on mature branches) which peels in strips to reveal several layers of reddish to light brown inner bark (hence the common name of ninebark). Bark provides winter interest, but is usually hidden by the foliage during the growing season. Features small pink or white, five-petaled flowers appearing in dense, flat, rounded, 1-2 diameter, spirea-like clusters (corymbs) in late spring. Flowers give way to drooping clusters of reddish fruit (inflated seed capsules). Ovate to rounded, usually 3-5 lobed leaves (to 4 long) are dull green in summer changing to an undistinguished yellow in fall. Genus name comes from the Greek physa meaning a bladder and karpos meaning fruit, referring to the inflated dry fruits of the plant. Specific epithet refers to the leaves that resemble those of Viburnum opulus. is noted for its deeply cut, wine-red foliage and its dense, free-branching, mounded growth habit. It is the result of a cross between P. Opulifolius Nanus (seed parent) and P. opulifolius Diabolo (pollen parent). It typically grows 4-6 tall and as wide, but, unlike the species, is noted for retaining compact form. Small pinkish-white, five-petaled flowers in dense, flat, rounded, 1-2 diameter, spiraea-like clusters (corymbs) appear in late spring. Ovate to rounded, usually 3-5 lobed leaves (to 4 long) are wine red. Foliage color tends to green up in hot summer climates as the summer progresses.

9 This summersweet is a sport of C. alnifolia 'Pink Spires'. Its fragrant, bottlebrush flowers are a darker pink; they attract butterflies, bees, and other insects in late summer and early fall. 'Ruby Spice' grows to about 4 to 6 feet tall and almost as wide, making this shrub suitable for a bed or border, a woodland or shade garden, or a waterside planting. Its yellow fall color extends the season of interest. Easily grown in average, medium to wet soils in full sun to part shade. Prefers part shade and consistently moist, acidic, sandy soils. 10 Virginia has been touted as the birthplace of the nation as well as the gateway to the South. It is home to the Blue Ridge Mountains, and Virginia is also for lovers moth lovers especially. Among the state s dogwood trees and foliage, some of the most interesting and beautiful moths are found. Since they only fly at night, luna moths are named for the moon. They are among the larger moths, with a wingspan of around 5 inches. Their wings are light green with distinctive eyespots. During spring and summer months, females lay eggs on the backs of black walnut leaves. These hatch in about 10 days. Their caterpillars will continue to eat and grow for three to four weeks, until it is time for them to cocoon. Since adults do not have mouths, they do not eat. They live just long enough to mate. out a week. Adult rosy maple moths also do not have mouths, and live to mate. They are an average-size moth with a wingspan of around 1 to 2 inches, and the pink on their wings makes them easy to recognize, although the amount of pink will vary, as will their base color of white or cream. They mate in the evening, and the next day females lay eggs that will hatch in approximately two weeks. As caterpillars they are hearty eaters, and in large populations can make themselves unwelcome by defoliating trees.

11 At first glance one might mistake hummingbird moths for their namesakes. They feed on nectar, and their rapid wingbeats make their wings almost invisible. They are among the few moths that fly in full daylight, and they can be found from gardens to meadows, wherever flowers are producing nectar. As caterpillars they cocoon and hibernate under leaves on the ground during winter months, and begin emerging in late spring. They are also known as clearwing moths, though when they first emerge their wings have brownish scales. These scales fall off during their first flight, leaving clear centers. "Bella" means "beautiful" and these moths are aptly named. They have distinctive rows of black spots on their wings, yet underneath, their colors can vary from yellow and pink to white. Their colors are even bright and beautiful during those awkward larvae and pupae stages, with various markings in shades of orange and black. However, do not let their beauty fool you. Their host plants harbor repellant alkaloids that the larvae sequester, making them poisonous to predators from egg stage to adult.

12 First, use distilled water. Often regular tap water will begin to bubble on your flowers, just about the time your guests sit down to dinner. Second you ll need to create a bit of weight on the flowers. You can attach the stems to the bottom of the vase with waterproof glue or you can put a handful of colorful stones into the bottom of your vase and wedge the stems to the bottom. Keep this arrangement simple. A few blooms or sprigs of flowers is all you will need, along with a floating candle at the top. Place one every two or three feet on a long table or three in the center of a round or square table and you re table will be the hit of the party. For a fun centerpiece that s a little less formal, take wedges of oranges, lemons and limes and layer them with cubes of matching color foam found at most craft stores. Put a few flowers on top and you have a ready made centerpiece that every one of your guests will want to duplicate! You can make this fun centerpiece with any summer fruits including melons or even cherries. The important thing here is that you use the fruit that s in season to make it cost effective. This centerpiece will last you at least four or 5 days if you put it in the refrigerator during the day and bring it out in the evenings. If you d like each of your guests to have their own mini centerpiece, round up all of your vintage or mismatched wine glasses, pick flowers in a variety of colors and set them underneath an upturned wine glass with a small votive candle on the bottom.
