3 Seed Provenance We are placing emphasis on our seed source selection, to ensure hardiness for our trading area. For example, our American Elm seed is collected locally from the center of Calgary, and our Trembling Aspen seed source is gathered at high elevation, in Fernie, B.C. One of its unique traits, is that it leafs out later than the other seed sources. This makes it unaffected by late spring frosts, as has occurred the last few years. We have a great crop of White Spruce maturing, with the seed collected in Cochrane, Alberta. Also, our Limber Pine, Scotts Pine, Mountain Pine, Ponderosa Pine, and Douglas Fir are all locally collected seed sources. We are always working on expanding our seed provenance to ensure you get the hardiest plants possible. 63 Care Instructions For Newly Installed Trees In order to keep your new trees alive and healthy, there is some maintenance involved. For the first 2 years, your tree will require water and nutrients, that you must supply. Every tree is different, and have their own specific needs that should be researched before purchasing. Below are basic tips to encourage health and growth of your new tree: During the warm months, you should be watering 2 or 3 times a week. If you have a water well around your tree, fill it with water, and allow to drain into the roots. If no water well is present, place your garden house a few feet from the trunk, and turn the water to a trickle for minutes. Most issues incurred with new trees are water related - either too much, or not enough. When in doubt, wait a few days after watering, and dig down about a foot deep, beside the rootball. The soil should feel moist to the touch - it should not feel hard and dry, nor sloppy and muddy. Hard, dry soil indicates you need to increase the water the plant is receiving. Sloppy, muddy soil indicates you need to decrease the water the plant is receiving. If you have a newly installed irrigation system, or new sod that is seeing frequent water, keep an eye on your trees, as this is a circumstance that can cause your trees to drown. Fertilizing is highly recommended in the spring. Do not fertilize trees in the fall, as this may promote more growth, and the tree may not shut down for winter. We advise you to use a general fertilizer, or a root starter, for any newly installed plant material. Please note that all fertilizers are different. Be sure to read and follow instructions regarding application. In the fall, newly installed deciduous plant material will turn to their fall colors early, and newly installed coniferous plant material will experience some needle shed. When the ground starts to freeze, typically in late October or early November, you should water your tree one last time. Leave your garden hose a foot or so away from the trunk, on a slow trickle for around half an hour. This will ensure the roots of the tree receive water for the winter. When the first few winter frosts occur, it is wise to stop watering. This is when the trees stop growing, and starts shutting down for winter. 62

Drip Irrigation Program - The best way to setup an irrigation system. If you have decided to install trees and shrubs on your property, you should be aware that newly planted trees & shrubs need to be watered three times a week for the first few years until they are well established. This is the most important aspect of ensuring your tree s survival. Every year we receive a large number of inquiries about the most efficient way to water 50 or more trees. We use drip irrigation in our nurseries and highly recommend it if you are watering trees that are spread over a large area. It is easy to install, basically maintenance free, no need to drain it for the winter, and does not require large volumes of water, allowing wells to easily supply it. It waters only the tree, hooks up to a garden hose, and is relatively inexpensive. Emitters - 8 litre per hour $0.99 ea. Garden Hose Adaptor $4.95 ea. Drip Tube Roll-1000 ft of 1/2 $ ea. 66
