Future of PLU Jane Proctor V.P. Policy & Issue Management Canadian Produce Marketing Association Presentation to EU Fresh Info Forum Rotterdam 2014 IFPS
Background What is the IFPS PLU? The International Federation for Produce Standards (IFPS) assigns and manages the fresh fruit & vegetable Price Look Up (PLU) numbers The numbers were aligned internationally over 10 years ago and are used around the globe by any country shipping to one of the following countries where the numbers are used domestically at POS: United States United Kingdom Canada Norway Australia New Zealand Mexico (starting in 2015)
What Business Need do the IFPS PLUs Address? The primary objective of a PLU code is to facilitate effective and efficient price integrity outcomes at the retail point of sale via a harmonized international system. Additional value added opportunities include: The capacity to offer for sale various varieties of an item, simultaneously and at different price points (e.g. apple varieties). Also to offer conventionally grown and organically grown produce loose/variable measure. Enhanced understanding of shopper behaviour to assist in category management and promotions, etc. The means to identify unique cultivars and varieties with high demand and /or low availability which capture a premium price from consumers and are sold through the supply chain at a price reflective of that premium.
Background What is the IFPS PLU? PLU use is expanding with an expectation that many South American countries will be adopting the IFPS PLU system in the near future. PLUs are used on produce sold bulk/loose/variable weight PLU stickers are typically applied in the pack house and travel throughout the supply chain. PLU identifies the type of produce item (e.g. Apple) and, in many cases the variety of the item (e.g. Cripps Pink Apple)
What criteria is used to determine if a PLU will be assigned? The IFPS members consider applications for new PLUs 4 times a year. All applications are considered under the following criteria: Commodity Variety unique (UPOV) and available to more than one marketer Item Size e.g. small/medium/large/extra-large Distribution/Marketing must be available to more than one marketer Production/Sales/Volumes current and 5 year projections Item patents or trademarks varietal name is assigned number Retail Support Letters 3 different retailers with 25 or more stores who utilize the IFPS PLU numbers.
PLU in Use
IFPS PLU Numbers The IFPS PLUs utilize the series of numbers as follows: : Conventionally grown : Reserved for future assignment of both conventionally and organically grown : Organically grown (the conventionally grown 4 digit number with a 9 added in front). Over 1400 PLUs have been assigned 419 of the Codes are Retailer Assigned
Retailer Assigned PLUs
What About the Future? PLU use is expanding across countries but some wonder if it will be replaced by the GS1 DataBar. The GS1 DataBar symbology used for loose/variable measure produce is the Stacked Omni-Directional. Label size and space used for the barcode mean the PLU is the only internationally standardized human readable code that can be included in a produce GS1 DataBar label.
