5 The JW Marriott Legacy Born in 1900, J. Willard Marriott had the unique opportunity to observe the 20 th century. It was his ability to study the way crowds flocked to ice cream stands during a hot Washington summer that led him to open a root beer stand. The root beer stand was renamed the Hot Shoppe when hot tamales were added to the menu. Soon after, the first Hot Shoppe turned into many and eventually became an expanded hospitality empire with the help of a company that felt more like a family. In the 1980 s, putting everything he d learned from his father into practice, J.W. Bill Marriott, Jr set out to build the single best hotel of his career. To honor his fathers legacy, Bill named the new property after him. Thus, this hotel forged out of love and pride between the father and son took root in 1984, when J. Willard was able to attend the opening of the first hotel bearing his name in Washington, DC the same place it had all started more than 50 years before.
