22 History of FUSION Handel was a frequent visitor to Clontarf Castle during his stay in Dublin for the premiere of Handel s famous Messiah. It was played in 1742, and it is believed that it was recited and practiced at Clontarf Castle. The lady of the house at that time, Dorothy Vernon, (Dolly) was from Hanover and particularly intimate with the composer, who wrote a piece called Forest Music for her, said to combine German and Irish melodies. The neighboring area of Dollymount is traditionally said to be named after this lady. Clontarf Castle was painted by JMW Turner, Turner is regarded as the artist who elevated landscape painting to new heights J. M. W. Turner, although he never visited (it is said to be his only Irish subject). The Castle is referred to by Phil Lynott of the Irish rock group Thin Lizzy in his song The Friendly Ranger at Clontarf Castle, the opening track on their 1971 debut album Thin Lizzy. Oliver Cromwell arrived in Ireland on August 15th 1649 and within two weeks had granted Clontarf Castle and lands to his favourite commander, Captain John Blackwell. It is virtually certain that Cromwell sojourned in the Castle during his Drogheda campaign. Norman Knight, Adam de Phepoe passed the castle and its lands on to the Knights Templars, who were a monastic order, founded in 1119 to protect pilgrims en route to Jerusalem, and had their headquarters on the Temple Mount on the site of the old temple of Solomon. Celtic King Brian Boru fought one of the most famous battles close to the seafront at Clontarf. The historic encounter of Good Friday 1014 entered the annals as the Battle of Clontarf. That morning, the 23rd of April, some 2,000 Vikings had by sunrise landed in longboats at Clontarf. They joined forces with the King of Leinster Mael Mordha, however King Brian Boru was victorious by sunset. A French historical account written at that time tells us that: The victory was won over the strangers and the Leinster people by the force of war, superior exertion and indomitable bravery.
