12 When, Where, and How to install Bee Hotels Some ideas for How: Zip ties On a post In a tree Rope Wire Nails, screws Requirements: 1. Must be between 3 and 6 feet off the ground 2. Must be installed in the correct position: Make sure longer edge of hotel roof is on top, to protect from rain Make sure longer edge of PVC pipe is on top, to protect from rain
13 When, Where, and How to install Bee Hotels Requirements: 1. Must be between 3 and 6 feet off the ground 2. Must be installed in the correct position (see previous slide) 3. Place both Bee Hotels in similar circumstances (e.g., if one is attached to a redbud tree, attach the other one to a redbud tree, too) 4. Once installed, do not alter or touch bee hotels (it can cause females to abandon nest-making!)
14 Weekly Recommendations Inspect your bee hotels every week or so Let us know if you observe activity, examples: Bees going in and out of holes Holes becoming sealed with mud/dirt Take and send pictures, video, writing! Share/send all media and observations weekly to us at: We may share your observations with the whole group through weekly updates

40 Bee Bowls Step 3: Remove any slugs, butterflies/moths/skippers, and crickets/grasshoppers from dip net
41 Step 4: Dump remaining insects into Whirl-Pak You should use one Whirl-Pak bag each week.
42 Step 5: Pour a small PG into Whirl-Pak, only enough to wet the specimens
43 Step 6: After collecting from all 9 bowls, roll and close the Whirl-Pak You should use only one Whirl-Pak bag each week.
44 Step 7: Re-fill any bowls less than half-full up to the halfway point with ONLY PG (no water) If you have bowls full from rain, pour out rain water until ¼ of the cup remains, then fill to halfway with PG
45 Step 8: Put the tied Whirl-Pak bag in a freezer
