1 First FBC Volume 11 October 2015 Issue W. 6th St., McGregor, TX Phone: (254) Fax: (254) Web: Sunday School Worship Manor Bible Study KidZone/JAM Time Junior High Kids Youth 180 9:30 a.m. 10:45 a.m. 10:00 a.m. Choir Rehearsal Wednesday nights 7:30 p.m. in the worship center. Everyone is welcome to come and sing. August 2015 Income: $ 11, Expenses: 10, Surplus Year-to-date: $ 7, FROM THE PASTOR, TERRY JOHNSTON The wise in heart are called discerning, And pleasant words promote instruction. Proverbs 16:21 NIV When Audrey was born, we brought her home and began to care for her in the way parents do, much as we had done with her older sister. Kim was a faithful nursing mother, but after a while we needed to supplement our baby s diet with formula. Little did we know that our baby had something wired inside of her where she was allergic to dairy products. We had had friends whose kids suffered from food allergies before, but we ourselves had never been faced with the reality of a potentially life-threatening condition. Instead of traditional formula, Audrey had to be given soy formula and eventually soy milk. When we began to introduce solid foods, after one single noodle of macaroni and cheese, our sweet baby s face got big white whelps and her breathing became labored. This would be our journey to bear until she either learned on her own her food allergies, or she outgrew it. You would not believe how many things you eat have traces of dairy in them seasoning packets, anything with cheese or sour cream, yogurt you name it. We became frantic label-readers, just to make sure we didn t have any problem episodes. We even provided soy milk for her day care to give her instead of regular milk. Thankfully as many children do, by age 3 Audrey had outgrown her dairy allergy, and she hasn t had any major issues since her toddler days. My point in telling you all this is simply this: until we were suddenly introduced to the world of food allergies, I don t think we would ever have known how hard the struggle is. In a similar sense, in our congregation we have the McCulloch family who also deal with some serious allergy issues. Edd and Kathy are faithful members of FBC, but over the past few years, they have developed allergies not to specific foods, but to most flowers, colognes, perfumes, and some cleaning products and deodorants. The allergic reactions cause headaches, watery and burning eyes, increased sinus congestion all of which lead to breathing trouble. Being wise and knowing that in crowds, you cannot expect everyone to be aware of their needs, Edd and Kathy have chosen to sit in the Cry Room during worship to avoid the inadvertent smells that set off the allergic problems. Their sitting in the Cry Room is not for antisocial purposes, but for health reasons. As with well-meaning friends who didn t understand Audrey s food allergy, it may be hard for us to understand their allergy to smells. Ironically, my own mother-in-law suffers from a milder case of allergy to smells, and we have to mom-proof the house before they come to visit! Please be wise and help us help the McCullochs by lessening our use of colognes and perfumes if possible. They have assured me that a friendly smile and wave through the glass is enough to show your welcoming spirit of fellowship with them! My prayer for us at FBC is that we are a family that understands and respects one another and our needs. I am confident that we can assist one another in carrying out what is beneficial for our congregation. Blessings and love, Bro. Terry
