12 四 行前任务 Q&A About Chinese Folk Arts Brief Introduction to Beijing Beijing is the capital of the People's Republic of China. It is not only the nation's political center, but also the cultural, scientific and educational heart as well as a key transportation hub. Beijing has served as a capital of the country for more than 800 years. The city has many places of historic interest and scenic beauty, including the Forbidden City the largest and best-preserved ancient architectural complex in the world; the Temple of Heaven a place where Ming and Qing emperors performed solemn rituals for bountiful harvests; the Summer Palace the emperors' magnificent garden retreat; the Ming tombs the stately and majestic mausoleums of 13 Ming Dynasty emperors; and the world-renowned and genuinely inspiring Badaling section of the Great Wall. Large-scale constructions have brought great changes to Beijing since the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, adding more and more new attractions to the mysterious old city. During the days in Beijing, you may visit some of the historic interests including the Great Wall, the Forbidden City and Lama Temple. Answer the following questions and do more research on the Internet. The Great Wall 长城 When was it built? When was it listed as a World Heritage? Why did Chinese people build it? Why is it called the Wall of 10,000 km( 万里长城 )? 12

13 The Forbidden City 故宫 What is it used for today? Who initiated the construction? Brief Introduction to Heilongjiang Geographical condition Heilongjiang Province is located in the most northeastern part of China. In shape, it was like a flying swan with its spread wings and its name Heilongjiang was named because of the big river Heilongjiang, one of the four great rivers in China, winding along its northern border. The Heilongjiang River Heilongjiang province covers an area of 46 square kilometers, within the territory of mountains and rivers and rich in resources, is a beautiful and fertile land. The west of Heilongjiang province is plain, the northeast for plain, North and southeast for mountain. Long and cold in winter, summer is short and cool, large temperature gap between north and south. 13

14 Heilongjiang province borders Russia for 3045km to the north and to the east, is an important land access to Russia and Europe in the Asian and Pacific area which makes the province an important window for China s opening-up. Map of China (1) Can you find Heilongjiang province in the map of China? Please mark out the location of Heilongjiang Province in the map of China. (2) Heilongjiang river is one of the four great rivers in China; can you name the other three big ones? Provincial capital- Harbin If we say Heilongjiang province is like a soaring swans, Harbin, the provincial capital, is the pearl inlaid under its neck. Harbin sits at the scenic Songhua River which has a temperate monsoon climate with four distinct seasons, but claims to be best in summer and winter. So you are luc ky to be here in season. In the winter it presents unique snow and ice landscape because of the severe cold. What is more, it is known far and wide because of its fresh summers and fantastic charm. Harbin serving as a key political, economic, scientific, cultural center in the Northeastern China is considered one of China s most beautiful cities. The city is well-known for its unique, Russian and European-influenced architecture. 14

15 Map of Heilongjiang (1) Please mark out the location of Heilongjiang Province in the map of China. (2)What is the weather like in Harbin city? Such as, Central Avenue, the pedestrian street, presents European culture; Gogol Street, presents Russian customs; Confucian Temple, presents Qing dynasty architectural style and the Guandong ancient street, presents the guandong culture(time when people mostly from Shandong province brave to the northeast of China for making a living). During the days in Harbin, you may visit the view-points that present these different cultures. 15

Please match the pictures with the answers below: 1Qing dynasty culture 2European culture 3Guandong culture Food Harbin diet presents characteristics of Qilu(It represents the region of Shandong province) diet culture, the indigenous food culture of Manchuria and part of the native Russian food culture. Three kinds of diet culture convergence, integration, and gradually formed a unique food culture in Heilongjiang province. The special cuisines in Harbin: 1 Harbin Hongchang ( Russian-influenced sausage) 2 Shazhucai(Manchu style cuisine) 3 Dumplings-the most representative dish of Harbin (1)In shape, do you know what is the dumplings like and what it means? 16

Folk arts The unique cultural and regional environment of Heilongjiang province has created the unique folk culture and folk art. Paper-cutting, shadow play and fish skin painting is characteristic of folk art in the province. Paper cut Paper cut is one of the oldest folk arts of Han in China. It is a carving art using scissors or knives to hollow out all kinds of patterns on papers. When it is the spring festival or the wedding, people stick the pretty paper cuts onto the windows, walls, doors and lanterns to make the atmosphere more jubilant. They live in the northeast of Heilongjiang Province and along the river. They live by fishing. They fish, eat fish, build houses and make bouts with fish skin, and make clothing with fish skin. They were famous for Fish Skin Tribe in history. Fish skin art is Hezhen s unique traditional handmade works. Fish skin arts were recorded by words at least 2500 years of history, which could date back to Sui and Tang Dynasties. During the long years of its history, the development of fish skin art runs throughout Hezhen s life, production, art, religion and every aspect. We can say that the fish skin art is the real life epitome of Hezhen s life they once lived, which helps us to be able to understand and perceive this ancient minority. Fish skin art has distinct regionalism and national character. Its production, material, and technology are unique. It is too unique to imitate and copy. And its ornamental value, decorative value and artistry are important parts of pattern arts treasury of the Chinese nation. The first step to make fish skin pictures is to process fish skin. It should include peeling, drying off and scaling, drying off the fish skin, beating cooked, bleaching and many other detailed steps. Fish skin pictures have paste and carve two kinds. During this summer camp, campers will make simple fish skin pictures in person. Please talk about the life style and living environment through the fish paintings below? 18
