5 ECHIGO FLYING IPA Region: NIIGATA, JAPAN Beer Type: I.P.A Echigo Beer Company, known as Japan s first microbrewery for being the first brewery licensed after Japan changed its beer licensing laws in 1993, has updated its usual line-up with their Flying IPA. Usually focusing on ales such as red, white, and pale, the Flying IPA is a welcome change and offers more hoppy deliciousness with a semi-sweet barley backbone. ECHIGO FLYING IPA Item# 1587, 24/350ML Echigo s Flying IPA is refreshingly sharp and bitter with a clear, golden body. First starting with heavy citrus and grapefruit aromas, this beer has an almost creamy mouthfeel and a light to medium body. The flavours are simple yet work surprisingly well together; bitter hop and sweet malt characteristics make this solid IPA stand out from other Japanese IPAs. This beer is brewed with 1.3 times more malt in comparison to regular beers. They are also blended with seven different types of malt to complete the process. Gavroche is a character in Victor Hugo s 19th century novel entitled Les Miserables. He is a rebellious yet always generous little urchin living by his wits on the streets of Paris. Gavroche is a strong, red beer in which the deep malt flavour and brisk hoppiness are very well balanced. The whole is accentuated by fruity flavours derived from a special top-fermenting yeast. This is a rare French example of an ale refermented in the bottle. Gavroche must be served with care, leaving behind the fine yeast sediments.
