4 SPIRITS B L E N D E D W H I S K Y Blended whiskies are a mixture of two or more whisky types, often combining single malts with grain whiskies to allow for a smaller price tag. Although this sometimes results in a compromise when it comes to flavour, many master blenders can create finely balanced spirits that can genuinely hold their own against a single malt. 7 V O D K A Taking its name from the Slavic word for water ( voda ), vodka or variants of it emerged across the countries of northern Europe and Scandinavia (the so-called vodka belt ) in the 1400s, likely originating in Poland. Blending ethanol distilled from grains or potatoes with water, it is colourless and largely flavourless which is probably why humanity has found no better mixer drink in the last 600 years. 8 L I Q U E U R S & E X O T I C S The volume and variety of liqueurs available is testament to mankind s ingenuity when it comes to making alcohol. Often developed as traditional herbal remedies and invented in monasteries, liqueurs are made by infusing spirits with fruits, spices, seeds, herbs and other ingredients and adding sugar syrups, resulting in a rainbow of possible flavours from the bitter tang of Campari to the sweetness of Solerno (it s a Scottish blood orange liqueur).
