Differences in yields of less than 3 % should be treated with reserve. 3 The ratings from normal sowings are applicable for sowing after mid-march in most seasons. 4 Observations taken from inoculated trials not taken to yield. 4 DAPHNA Unbeatable adjusted yield at % of controls * Low early sown bolters CANTONA KWS Top 5 for adjusted yields % of controls * BCN tolerant BCN tolerant NEW Use alongside DAPHNA for BCN tolerance without compromising yield Don t miss out on breeding progress! The best variety for the UK The first BCN-tolerant variety to top the BBRO Recommended List, Daphna outperformed all varieties in trial over three contrasting seasons. More than 6 % higher yielding than the control varieties, DAPHNA has proven potential to improve enterprise gross margins. A low bolter count in the early sown window and with excellent resistance to rust and powdery mildew, DAPHNA is suited to all farm situations and locations. NEW CANTONA the perfect complement to DAPHNA CANTONA KWS still an excellent performer and the outstanding second choice variety for those with positive BCN samples. A high sugar content of 18 % makes it a good choice to those further away from the sugar factory. A solid resistance to both powdery mildew and rust and a noted strong performance against downy mildew in BBRO trials prove CANTONA KWS to be a strong variety for most farming situations. Good early-sown performance further supports its appeal. 5 Beet Cyst Nematode Identify, Act and Protect Yields Beet Cyst Nematode in the UK positive BCN soil samples Common risk factors Warm and moist soils Tight crop rotation What are Beet Cyst Nematodes (BCN)? 1 mm long eelworms that invade and feed from the root cells. Each cyst holds up to 200 eggs and larvae. The first 10 % of yield losses mostly shows no visible symptoms. Host plants e. g. OSR Spread by cultivation & machinery Patches of wilting leaves under midday sun What to do against nematodes? Observation + 1. Soil sampling Crop 2. rotation Choose BCN 3. tolerant varieties Stunted and deformed root growth BCN + 52 t / ha root yield 75 t / ha root yield Roots develop a bearded appearance BCN Non-tolerant variety (under BCN infestation) BCN tolerant variety (under BCN infestation) Visible white or brown cysts on root hairs The effect: % Yield losses Source: BBRO, 2016 Regularly check soil and crop for BCN infestation. Annual soil sampling will indicate population levels. BCN infestation decreases by approx. 40 % per year in non-host plants. A wide crop rotation helps to reduce infestation. There are now no yield penalties for BCN tolerant varieties. Drill BCN tolerant varieties alongside non-tolerant varieties in suspected fields. Monitor for any differences during the season

6 SENADA KWS The best combined disease resistance of any recommended variety * High yields across all seasons DARNELLA KWS Top four adjusted yield %* Excellent sugar yield %* Noted resistance to Downy mildew No. 1 for a healthy canopy The best combined resistance to powdery mil dew and rust of any recommended variety and the second-highest yielding variety on the RL at % of controls makes SEDANA KWS an impressive all-round performer. SENADA KWS delivers its best performances when sown from mid-march which will appeal to growers wanting a range of varieties to spread the drilling workload. NEW Proven performance over five seasons Last year s highest yielding variety, DARNELLA KWS has shown great consistency across four years of trials. Growers can be confident that whatever the season, DARNELLA KWS will perform well. Unsuited to drilling before mid-march, DARNELLA KWS has good resistance to powdery mildew and its resistance to downy mildew was noted in BBRO trials making it an obvious choice for those in this situation. SENADA KWS has the best combined disease resistance of any variety grown in BBRO trials BBRO disease scoring * Downy Mildew Infection x Sugar Yield (Swaffham Bulbeck, 2015) Downy Mildew Infection (%) SENADA KWS SPRINGBOK CAYMAN HAYDN HORNET PASTEUR Rust Powdery mildew * 1 = high leaf infection 9 = very low leaf infection KWS Varieties Other Varieties 0 Sugar Yield (t / ha) Source: BBRO Recommended List of Sugar Beet varieties 2018 Source: BBRO trials SENADA KWS DARNELLA KWS 13

7 SABATINA KWS The UK s most popular variety in 2016 and 2017 High adjusted yields %* Strong resistance to downy mildew ALISHA KWS Exceptional sugar content 18.2 %* High adjusted yield %* Strong against downy mildew A season long performer SABATINA KWS is a proven performer and the most widely sown variety of 2016 and Its continued strong performance in trials places it in the top 10 highest-yielding varieties and comfortably ahead of the control varieties. Its reliable performance and good resistance to the principal foliar diseases means it is expected to be popular with growers again for drilling in spring Reduce your haulage costs A proven performer with a high sugar content of 18.2 % makes ALISHA KWS highly suited to those located far from a sugar factory. While not suitable for drilling before mid-march it performs strongly after this time and is another strong choice for those wanting a range of varieties to cover the drilling window. Good resistance to both rust and powdery mildew combined with noted resistance to downy mildew ensure ALISHA KWS will be another popular variety among growers in SABATINA KWS s impressive yield explains its popularity among growers Adjusted tonnes % of control varieties ALISHA KWS reduces your haulage costs with its exceptional sugar content Sugar content % SABATINA KWS CAYMAN (C) SPRINGBOK (C) HAYDN (C) HORNET (C) PASTEUR (C) ALISHA KWS CAYMAN (C) SPRINGBOK (C) HAYDN (C) HORNET (C) PASTEUR (C) Source: BBRO Recommended List of Sugar Beet varieties 2018 Source: BBRO Recommended List of Sugar Beet varieties SABATINA KWS ALISHA KWS 15
