3 FRANK S MARKET REPORT DECEMBER 0 DAIRY Whilst the present market environment does seem more stable than was predicted a month ago, the future could still go one way or the other. UK butter and cream prices have continued to ease back, assisted by Sterling s recent ascension. Large manufacturers are keeping out of the market and hoping for further reductions. Cheese prices remain resilient and SMP prices are increasing, as production is well down on last year s rates. SUGAR The EU sugar market, as well as the world market, has changed a lot over the last few weeks. Due to the disappointing harvest of /, the availability of EU sugar in running / season is greatly reduced. In recent weeks, the predicted / harvest numbers have been downgraded several times. DRIED FRUIT Turkish Sultanas / Raisins Turkish fruit prices are rising by the day as a result of smaller crops, due to various poor weather occurrences, and currency volatility in Turkey. Currants Sultana prices have gone up by about % during October / early November and with the Turkish Lira getting stronger, it is likely that the market will continue firming. With no carry over of stock from last year s crop and another poor yielding crop, Greek packers have stopped offering currants and there is no indication about when they will become available again. It looks like we will experience difficulties in keeping continuity of supply unless we can source alternative material from South Africa. OILS AND FATS Rapeseed Oil Rapeseed Oil moved higher during the previous weeks but the gains in this market were limited. There are some logistical issues that are currently underpinning the market. Low water levels on the Rhine, the lowest in almost a decade, is causing shipments to stall and floating stock hard to come by. This in turn is leading to a drop in the crush figures. News regarding next year s crop still does not look good which supports the market. It is anticipated that the EU crop will only be around million hectares. This is compared to a crop size of closer to million hectares this year. With good biodiesel demand still in the market it can be expected that the carryout will not be big, and this supply issue could make things tight again for next year. FLOUR MARKET REPORT THE EXCHANGE DOWN.% STERLING V DOLLAR EXCHANGE RATE End Sept.0 End Oct. UP 0.% STERLING V EURO EXCHANGE RATE End Sept. End Oct. UP.% BRENT CRUDE OIL $/BARREL End Sept $0. End Oct $.0 CURRENCY Sterling remained fairly stable during October as Brexit negotiations appeared to be progressing reasonably well. As we start November, cracks have started to appear in UK political togetherness regarding the Government proposals. ENERGY This combined with a strengthening Dollar could see some volatility ahead. Crude oil prices have continued to fall in early November from the recent year highs of around $0 per barrel. However, this could be a short-lived bear run as Saudi Energy Minister Khalid al-fahid announces that they need to cut product by 000 barrels per day from October production levels, in order to stabilize the market. The Dutch (Suiker Unie) initial harvest in / was forecast at. million tonnes and the numbers from last week show yet another decline and the expectation of our harvest / has now fallen to. million tons. On the th October, the EU Commission also reported a downward revision of the EU harvest figures 0/0 to. million tonnes (in September the Commission still expected. million tonnes). It is believed that the latest EU forecast of. million tonnes is still positive. This and also the fact that recent market prices are well below cost price, as well as the reporting on the reduction of the acreage in the upcoming /0 season, has ensured that the current sugar prices have increased significantly and have moved in the direction of import parity instead of export parity. In addition, global sugar production is showing a similar trend and it looks like the originally forecasted surplus for the / season has completely disappeared. Due to the ethanol parity, the sugar/ethanol mix in Brazil has changed from % in the / season to % in / years, the Indian crop is suffering from the cane grub and in Thailand, government support for cane sugar farmers has been reduced and according to this development, the farmers switch to Cassava. NUTS Coconut Despite the fact that the rainy season has already arrived at South East Asia, prices for coconut products remain very competitive. Historically, prices firm towards the end of the year as the adverse weather makes it more difficult to harvest the raw material. This year, all origins have been building capacity strongly from the beginning of the year and Sri Lanka came back to the market after almost bad years as a result of the struggles with El Nino phenomenon. OILS AND FATS Palm Oil There is still good product availability and the market has been very dynamic. Exports continue to fall which was to be expected after buyers taking advantage of zero export tax in September. For October, the exports were down in the region of 0%. Palm Oil is now trading at a big discount to Soybean Oil and the spread to Gas Oil has also reached a mark that should attract demand. The drop in Crude Oil levels is causing some weakness in Palm Oil as well as other markets. UK maize imports reached Kt in this season to date (Jul-Sep 0), according to the latest HMRC data. This is the fastest import pace in recent years and is significantly above the five-year average (0-) of 0Kt for these months. Higher imports are likely a result of increased domestic demand for maize, due to imported maize pricing competitively against domestic feed grains. In the first three months of this season (0/), we ve seen increasing inclusions of maize in compound animal feed production Last week, the cost of imported maize (any origin, Nov-,.00/t) was around /t lower than the spot UK average ex-farm price for feed wheat. Should this price discount be maintained throughout the season we are likely to see domestic demand for maize in compound animal feed remain strong. However, if the price gap narrows then we may see domestic demand and maize imports drop as a result. Chicago wheat futures (May-) are up.%. The rise, which recovered much of the decline over the previous week, was in part due to continued concerns around the state of the Argentinian wheat crop. Recent frosts over parts of Buenos Aires have the potential to impact crops during grain-filling stages and may lead to a reduction from current production estimates. *This information is the opinion of Frank Wade with data support from Mintec. 4 THE SALVATION ARMY CELEBRATES 00 YEARS OF THE 'DOUGHNUT LASSIES' In Helen Purviance was one of 0 Salvation Army volunteers to be sent to the front line of the Great War in France. Their mission, to provide comfort, prayer and treats, such as coffee and fudge to the serving soldiers. Working in wooden huts, mere miles from the trenches in Eastern France, the women volunteers were able to collect excess rations and bake pies, pan cakes, cupcakes and other sweet treats to comfort the soldiers and remind them of home. Later, as rations depleted, the women began to make doughnuts from the only ingredients available to them, flour, fat, salt, eggs and sugar. Although simple in flavour, the doughnuts proved a huge success amongst the soldiers, some waiting patiently for hours in the mud and rain to sample these delicious treats. Helen and fellow officer, Margaret Sheldon, worked late into the night and managed to fry 0 doughnuts on that first day. The next day that number doubled until they were producing up to,000 doughnuts per day. The soldiers, cheered by the doughnuts, soon referred to the Salvation Army women as the Doughnut Lassies. This simple doughnut had become a symbol of the Salvations Army s empathy and compassion and of its commitment to ease the hardships of the frontline fighting man during the Great War. And this tradition continues to this day. For the past five years, BAKO North Western have been supporting Wendy Lovatt-Jones from the Bolton Citadel Corps by donating doughnuts to serve at their annual vintage tea party, held each year to commemorate Armistice day. In a recent , Wendy wrote; I can assure you that your kindness in this way is not taken for granted by the team, and we are extremely grateful for your help. It's such a lovely thing to do as the doughnuts represent loving thoughts of home to the men on the front line in war. It's very fitting this year as we celebrate 00 since the Great War." Established in, the Salvation Army assist thousands of people across the world each year, operating in countries. For more information, visit SWEET TREATS WITH LESS SUGAR AND FAT? 5 FEATURE Christmas Celebration BAKO code DO YOU PREFER TRADITIONAL OR MODERN? Winter holidays are all about food! For example, pumpkin spiced soup is a great Halloween themed warmer. Then, of course, there s Christmas, a day that s practically devoted to the cream of the crop of Winter warmers! Much like our humble roast dinner served all year round, but with all the added extras and sides that make it extra special everyone loves pigs in blankets, right? If you don t finish off Christmas feeling full and satisfied, you re doing it wrong! Many prefer to celebrate Christmas in a traditional way, as depicted in films and TV shows. However, there has been a trend towards more unconventional, modern Christmas celebrations as people adapt the holiday to best suit their family and way of life. THE LOCATION Traditional Traditionally, Christmas is always spent in a family home joined with other friends and family. This is a great time for everyone to get together and eat a home-cooked Christmas dinner in a familiar setting that everyone is comfortable with. Modern In the modern era, however, there has been a larger trend for families to go out to eat on Christmas Day. Many restaurants and public houses are staying open on Christmas Day to cater to this newer demand. You can understand why some families prefer this approach! Some families take it even further afield. As the cost of travel becomes more affordable, more and more families are taking to the skies and celebrate Christmas in a foreign country. THE DECORATIONS Traditional First up, the decor! You need to decide whether you re going for classic and traditional or modern and contemporary. Classic Christmas decorations will never go out of style, with your typical red, green, gold and silver popular choices as ever. Modern This year, retailer John Lewis believes it will be...rainbow Christmas trees! It s a much wider colour palette than we re used to seeing during the festive period, but for those into the latest fashions, this could be it! THE FOOD MENU Traditional When it comes to food, you can t really beat a classic Christmas dinner! Turkey, stuffing, mashed and roasted potatoes, cauliflower cheese, lashings of gravy and, of course, pigs in a blanket - an all time favourite! Modern There are always those who want to throw out the rulebook and do away with classics! And why not? In recent years there has been a rise in people eating everything from sushi or steak, through to pizza and Mexican food for their Christmas dinner! As you can see, there are many ways to enjoy Christmas Day, traditional or otherwise. However you choose to celebrate yours, it s important not to lose sight of what really matters, a day spent with those you love most enjoying great food and entertainment!
