KUKURU SAND PLAY Kukuru class children love playing in the sand. They are getting use to playing with sand. Younger children enjoy touching the sand, but older children don t just enjoy the feeling, they go for the sandbox tools and different containers to pour sand out over and over again. Sensory play isn't just about touch. It's about engaging all the senses they use to learn about the world around them. In fact, the more senses children use during an activity, the more learning potential it has. Sensory play can even help children meet developmental milestones!
DRAMATIC PLAY IN THE TODDLER CLASS Rooooaaaarrrr I m a dinosaur!,he says loudly. I ll prepare the meal today!, she says with a frying pan in her hand. Children love engaging in dramatic play, in which they pretend to be someone other than themselves. Children are very observative, and they express their observations through dramatic play. We are often surprised by the fine observation skills of children by examining their dramatic play. By engaging in dramatic play, the children increase memory, understanding, imagination, observation skills, vocabulary, and communication skills.
LET'S DANCE It s a well-known fact that fitness is an essential part of children s health. This month, Kafuu and Nuuji classes experienced a mini Zumba session with different CDC teachers trying new music styles and choreographies. Kaori and Aimi sensei, from Kukuru class joined Iraida sensei for a half an hour session filled with fun, fitness and entertainment! Zumba, which literally means moving quickly and having fun is the perfect way to incorporate exercise into kids lives in a fun, easy way with multiple personal and social benefits. The choreographies were broken into kid-friendly routines, giving children an outlet to jump, dance, shake, and swing their hips. We also added age-appropriate games and activities, helping children gain coordination, self-confidence, overcome fears, learn about teamwork, and much more. We can t wait for our new dancing adventure with Kukuru class!
KUGANI CLASS CIRCLE TIME Daily circle time begins with Japanese or English greetings. Calendar time includes; month, date, days of the week and read aloud with children. We have weekly helpers who are in charge of helping teachers at daily circle time. We also have some other helpers in our class and they are lunch helpers, bedding/rest time helpers, and clean up helpers. The circle time helpers help teachers with counting the number of children and teachers. After the counting is done, we do try some simple additions together to see how many children and teachers are at school for the day. When reading the calendar, numbers 1 to 31 in English and Japanese, children are able to read on their own eagerly and confidently. Also, they all love singing the days of the week song. We hear some children singing circle time songs during center time. During the circle time, we have another fun activity called How are you feeling today? This activity is set up so that children can express their own feelings in their own words. First, they will find and pick their own name off the white board and put their name on the picture of the feeling chart that fits their own feelings for the day. The part of circle time is particularly important for us to use as one of our tools to meet the each child s emotional needs daily. Also, children will be able to express their feelings in front of others, and build relationships with their peers as well as teachers. By participating in the circle time every day, children share a wonderful time with friends and teachers. Learning numbers, calendar is great way to start the day and fun activity time for us all.
TANCHA NO OKA KEIROKAI In September, the children of Shinka and Kugani classes participated in the annual Keiroukai event, at the Tancha no Oka day service home. Keiroukai is "the respect for the aged celebration" in Japan. The Shinka and Kugani classes started the event with a traditional Eisa song and dance. After Eisa, the Shinka and Kugani Classes sang an Okinawan children's folk song "Ha-nuhandui", and played "rock, paper, scissors" with the grandmas and grandpas. We were able to see the wonderful smiles of the Grandpas and Grandmas of Tancha no Oka. After the game, the Shinka class children sang the English songs "Five Green and Speckled Frogs" and "The Coconut Song". The grandmas and grandpas joined in on the coconut song, forming the letters of the song with their hands. It was a great hand workout for them! The whole experience was wonderful, in particular, when the children gave the grandparents shoulder massages during one of the songs. It was a very heart warming sight and valuable experience for everyone. We believe that this wonderful experience will benefit the children in many ways, and they will grow up to be caring and respectful big brothers and sisters.
SHINKA CLASS CALENDAR The calendar is one of the first things we do in the Shinka Class everyday. Because the children are a bit older, we do a lot during our calendar time. The children learn the basics, like days of the week, months of the year, seasons, weather, and counting, in both English and Japanese. The kids love doing the "jump, clap, count". We count forwards and backwards during this! Sometimes the teacher leads the circle time and sometimes the circle time helpers lead. The circle time helpers are a group of children whose classroom job is to help with, or lead circle time. The groups rotate weekly, so everyone is able to have a chance being a circle time helper. On our classroom calendar, the teacher also marks the dates and days of special events, field trips, holidays, when new friends will be joining the class, and when old friends will be leaving the class. We also use a numbered paper chain to count down the days until our next field trip. Each day one child will come up and cut one of the rings off the chain, until there are no more left. This is nice because rather than just talking about how many days are left, this gives them a visual as well. It's a great activity for our visual and tactile learners! These days the children have been enjoying when the teacher hides the day of the week or month of the year card. The children will close their eyes and count to a given number, after that they must search the whiteboard for math. The children love singing and moving to the songs. the card. The children learned that the word "hot" means they are close to the card, and the word "cold" means they are far from the card. They get very excited during this calendar activity! Lastly, we love using songs and games with the calendar. We have 3-4 different days of the week and months of the year songs/finger plays that incorporate

HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF SHICHI- GO-SAN? Shichi-go-san literally means seven, five and three and it is a traditional festival in Japan to celebrate the healthy growth and well being of children ages 7, 5 and 3. There are several ways to celebrate this event but most commonly, children dress up in traditional attire such as Kimono for girls and Hakama for boys and they visit a shrine with their family. Many families also go to a photo studio to take commemorative pictures. This annual event was originally designated on November 15 th however, it is common to have the ceremony on the weekends or holidays in October or November. We would like to get the CDC children to experience part of this traditional Japanese event and we will be taking commemorative pictures of Shinka, Kafuu and Nuuji class children on November 8 th. The Shinka class children will be dressing up in traditional Japanese attire and the Kafuu/Nuuji class children will be dressing up in traditional Okinawan attire. We will start the photo shoot at 9:30am with Kafuu and Nuuji class and Shinka class will follow after they finish. We encourage you to comb or tie up your child s hair however you want at home in the morning and please dress your child in a red OIST T-shirt and a pants. Shinka, Kafuu and Nuuji class children are going to love this traditional event for sure and they will have a nice memory to share with friends and family of their time at Tedako Preschool. Pictured Right: a commemorative Shichi-Go-San picture of Mami-sensei (age 7) in a Kimono and her younger brother.
