Tree photography: it pleases me to take amateur photographs of my garden & it pleases my garden to make my photographs look professional - ROBERT BRAULT. If you ask a nurseryperson to list his/her favourite tasks, tree photographing is unlikely to feature as their No.1! The SAP team have put this book together to provide some of the answers to many of our customers questions over the past 40 years. 4 EVERGREEN NAME:Cedrus Libani Glauca COMMON NAME: Blue Cedar MATURE HEIGHT: METRES SIZES AVAILABLE: 5-7 METRES TALL Description: A very striking tree with glaucous blue-green foliage, which is often planted as a specimen tree in lawns. In a big border, the blue coloration teams especially well with red and orange heather foliage in a garden on acid soil, or with autumn foliage tints or the winter stems of dogwoods 2

5 EVERGREEN NAME:Ilex Golden King COMMON NAME: Golden Holly MATURE HEIGHT: 6-8 METRES SIZES AVAILABLE: 4-6 METRES TALL Description: Large but compact evergreen shrub. Leathery, oblong-ovate leaves, spine-toothed when young, becoming spineless, mottled grey-green in the centre with bright golden-yellow margins. Small white flowers in May-June, followed by reddish-brown berries ripening to red in winter. Tolerant of air pollution. 3

6 EVERGREEN NAME:Taxus Baccata COMMON NAME: Yew MATURE HEIGHT: METRES SIZES AVAILABLE: 1-4 METRES TALL Description: Yew is an ideal low to medium-high conifer hedge-like plant. The needles, which are horizontal branches are bright green and pointed. An evergreen, the yew can grow in all soil types, both in the sun or in partial shade. 4

7 EVERGREEN NAME:Taxus Baccata Fastigiata COMMON NAME: Columnar Irish Yew MATURE HEIGHT: 7-8 METRES SIZES AVAILABLE: 4-7 METRES TALL Description: Taxus Baccata 'Fastigiata' is an extremely useful evergreen conifer for sun or shade. Most commonly used for hedging purposes, it has a naturally upright broadly columnar form and takes shearing well. Its dense form and dark green colour makes a matt-green dramatic backdrop for a perennial or mixed shrub border and a fine support for clematis. 5

8 EVERGREEN NAME:Taxus Baccata Fastigiata Aurea COMMON NAME: Columnar Yellow Irish Yew MATURE HEIGHT: 5-6 METRES SIZES AVAILABLE: 4-7 METRES TALL Description: Taxus Baccata 'Fastigiata' Aurea. This is the golden variety of Irish Yew. Slow-growing and columnar, growing no more than 5 to 6 metres. Wonderful golden foliage in full sun in summer. Grow against a dark backdrop for maximum effect. 6

9 EVERGREEN NAME:Sequoiadendron Giganteum COMMON NAME: Californian Redwood MATURE HEIGHT: 30 METRES SIZES AVAILABLE: 4-12 METRES TALL Description: Particularly impressive conifer that can grow to heights of 30m with a crown diameter of about 8-9m. The oldest Sequoia is estimated to be three thousand years old and is approximately one hundred metres tall. As far as is known, a sequoia has never died from old age. 7

10 MULTI-STEMS NAME:Acer Plat Crimson King Multi-Stem COMMON NAME: Purple Norway Maple Multi-Stem MATURE HEIGHT: METRES SIZES AVAILABLE: 4-8 METRES TALL Description: Acer 'Crimson King is a handsome tree which makes a striking ornamental feature for a medium/large garden. Rapid-growing and tolerant of pollution, it thrives on almost any soil, including clay. It can be useful for disguising unsightly buildings. 8

11 MULTI-STEMS NAME:Betula Nigra Multi-Stem COMMON NAME: River Birch Multi-Stem MATURE HEIGHT: METRES SIZES AVAILABLE: 5-8 METRES TALL Description: Superb as a multi-stem, this medium-sized tree has a statuesque form and will look stunning in any medium or large-sized garden planted in a group or individually as a specimen tree. The pinkish-orange bark peels attractively in papery sheets creating an attractive winter feature. The diamond-shaped, green leaves emerge in the spring and turn rich yellow in the autumn. Looks very effective when planted in groups in a naturalised way with undulating grass or bulb planting. Loves damp conditions and holds leaves longer than many other birch. 9

12 MULTI-STEMS NAME:Betula Utilis Jacquemontii Multi-Stem COMMON NAME: Himalayan Birch Multi-Stem MATURE HEIGHT: METRES SIZES AVAILABLE: 3-8 METRES TALL Description: Dazzling snow white bark is the main feature of this tree. A spotlight under the tree really shows up the colour on dark winter evenings! Widely planted in groups of 3 or 5 in lawns to great effect. Provides screening and shelter. Grows to a mature height of 15m and a spread of 2.5m in 10 years. 10

13 MULTI-STEMS NAME:Laburnum X Watereri Vossi COMMON NAME: Laburnum Multi-Stem MATURE HEIGHT: 7-8 METRES SIZES AVAILABLE: 4-6 METRES TALL Description: Medium-sized deciduous and spreading tree or as here, a large multi-stem shrub, bearing a profusion of spectacular, pendant yellow racemes in late spring and early summer. Full sun. 11

14 SHAPES NAME:Acer Plat Globosum COMMON NAME: Globe/Mophead Maple MATURE HEIGHT: 6-7 METRES SIZES AVAILABLE: CM GIRTH Description: A round headed tree which has a distinctive lollipop outline. Especially useful in confined urban spaces where greenery and shade are in short supply, and there is not the space for a full sized tree. It is drought tolerant and will cope with compaction. 12

15 SHAPES NAME:Box Headed Tilia COMMON NAME: Box Headed Lime MATURE HEIGHT: METRES SIZES AVAILABLE: 30-60CM GIRTH Description: Box Headed Limes are used as hedges or individual pieces to compliment the garden. The trees will have a clear stem of between 1.8 and 2.20 metres. A line of Box Headed Tillias for Dublin s O Connell street was supplied by SAP nurseries in 2004 (BACK COVER PHOTO). 13

16 SHAPES NAME:Buxus Sempervirens COMMON NAME: Box Hedging/Topiary SIZES AVAILABLE: METRES TALL Description: Very dense small leaved evergreen, with dark green glossy, leathery leaves which give off an unusual sweet smell. Small tuffy white flowers appear from late winter. Slow growing and shade tolerant. Box can be used both for hedging and topiary work. 14

17 SHAPES NAME:Tilia Pallida Pleached COMMON NAME: Pleached Lime MATURE HEIGHT: METRES SIZES AVAILABLE: 30-55CM GIRTH Description: Once the preserve of grand estates, pleaching - the art of training trees into stunning shapes - has again become a modern style statement. The ability of this tree to create private enclosed spaces, make it a must for urban dwellers. 15

18 STANDARD NAME:Acer & SEMI MATURE Campestre Elsrijk COMMON NAME: Field Maple MATURE HEIGHT: METRES SIZES AVAILABLE: 8-45CM GIRTH Description: A tough, adaptable tree tolerant of a wide range of site conditions. Excellent for street planting and for urban sites generally. Especially useful for smaller landscaped areas. Selected for its narrow crown. Tolerates a wide range of conditions including both alkaline and acid soils, some dryness, soil compaction, air pollution and light shade. Generally pest and disease free. Also tolerates heavy pruning. 16

19 STANDARD NAME:Acer & SEMI MATURE Plat Emerald Queen COMMON NAME: Norway Maple MATURE HEIGHT: METRES SIZES AVAILABLE: 8-45CM GIRTH Description: The Norway Maple is a fast-growing tree, eventually quite large but easily pruned to confine its spread for many years. It is a handsome species, spreading to make a satisfying rounded crown and sufficiently robust to be grown in exposed positions, even as a windbreak. It bears greenish-yellow flowers in early spring and displays bright yellow colour in the autumn 17

20 STANDARD NAME:Acer & SEMI MATURE Rubrum COMMON NAME: Red Maple MATURE HEIGHT: METRES SIZES AVAILABLE: 8-35CM GIRTH Description: A neat narrow deciduous, conical tree with bright green, feathery leaves turning gold in autumn. Red Maple is one of the most dramatically beautiful of autumn colouring trees. The Red Maple, Acer Rubrum, is not difficult to grow. It thrives in any ordinary soil, ideally deep fertile soil. However, it tends to colour best on acidic soil as many autumn colour trees do. In its native land, it is also known as 'Swamp Maple' because it grows well in wet ground and river flood plains, which is unusual for a maple. 18

21 STANDARD NAME:Betula & SEMI MATURE Utilis Jacquemontii COMMON NAME: Himalayan Birch MATURE HEIGHT: METRES SIZES AVAILABLE: 6-50CM GIRTH Description: This variety has the whitest bark of any birch. An elegant tree suitable for both small and large gardens, brightening up any winter garden with its white bark lit up by the low sun. It can be grown as a specimen in the lawn or in a group to give a woodland effect. Habitat: Large tree with slender, straight leading stem and an open, domed crown, main branches spreading picturesquely. Fast growing. Annual growth 45cm in height, 25cm spread. 19

22 STANDARD NAME:Carpinus & SEMI MATURE Bet Fastigiata COMMON NAME: Upright Hornbeam MATURE HEIGHT: METRES SIZES AVAILABLE: 8-40CM GIRTH Description: The Hornbeam is a dense, columnar tree when young, becoming pyramidal with age. A very good screen, specimen or street tree. A tree that requires little or no pruning. A line of these which were contract grown by SAP nurseries for Dublin City Council, can be seen planted along Dorset Street in Co. Dublin. 20

23 STANDARD NAME:Fagus & SEMI MATURE Sylvatica COMMON NAME: Common Beech MATURE HEIGHT: METRES SIZES AVAILABLE: 6-50CM GIRTH Description: A magnificent specimen tree. These breathtaking beauties can be seen in quite a few parks. For smaller gardens the beech tree is highly appreciated as a hedge. July is the key month for trimming a beech hedge. 21

24 STANDARD NAME:Fagus & SEMI MATURE Sylvatica Purpurea COMMON NAME: Copper Beech MATURE HEIGHT: METRES SIZES AVAILABLE: 18-40CM GIRTH Description: Copper Beech is a variety of European beech with shining purple or copper-colour leaves. Suited to forming a hedge and not suited to damp heavy grounds. Bark is distinctively smooth and grey. 22

25 STANDARD NAME:Prunus & SEMI MATURE Kanzan COMMON NAME: Flowering Cherry MATURE HEIGHT: 8-10 METRES SIZES AVAILABLE: 14-50CM GIRTH Description: Numerous dark pink blossoms appear at the beginning of May. Red-brown bark and bronze autumn foliage are other notable characteristics of this striking tree. 23

26 STANDARD NAME:Quercus & SEMI MATURE Robor COMMON NAME: Oak MATURE HEIGHT: METRES SIZES AVAILABLE: 6-55CM GIRTH Description: A free standing, old specimen oak tree is something of unmatched beauty. All oaks love heavy, deep soil with loam at least in the subsoil. A wonderful choice for large estates, it is also ideal for avenues and wide verges. 24

27 STANDARD NAME:Tilia & SEMI MATURE Europea Pallida COMMON NAME: Common Lime MATURE HEIGHT: METRES SIZES AVAILABLE: 12-50CM GIRTH Description: Tilia X Europaea Pallida is a variety of the seed grown Common Lime, Tilia X Europaea, which is a hybrid of Tilia Cordata and Tilia Platyphyllos. This tree is perfect for avenue planting, forming imposing and statuesque specimens at maturity. It is well suited to traditional parkland planting schemes and like most Limes is a suitable candidate for routine pollarding. 25

28 UNIQUE NAME:Acer Palmatum COMMON NAME: Japanese Maple MATURE HEIGHT: 5-8 METRES SIZES AVAILABLE: 5-6 METRES TALL Description: Acer Palmatum is a deciduous tree growing to 8m (26ft) by 6m (19ft) at a slow rate. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It prefers moist soil. 26

29 UNIQUE NAME:Acer Saccharinum COMMON NAME: Sugar Maple MATURE HEIGHT: METRES SIZES AVAILABLE: CM GIRTH Description: The Sugar Maple is often planted as an ornamental tree because of its rapid growth and ease of propagation and transplanting. It is highly tolerant of urban situations, and is frequently planted next to streets. Although it naturally is found near water, it can grow on drier ground if planted there. In ideal natural conditions, Acer Saccharinum may live up 130 years, but in urban environments often 80 or less. 27

30 UNIQUE NAME:Betula Pendula Tristis COMMON NAME: Silver Birch Tristis MATURE HEIGHT: METRES SIZES AVAILABLE: CM GIRTH Description: This tree has an unusual growth habit, the branches intertwine with each other and grow inwards thus producing an erect habit. The leaves are triangular shape and have a serrated edge. They change from green to butter yellow in autumn. The ornamental white trunk sheds in sheets paper thin. It has deep black fissures in the lower trunk. This tree looks fantastic during its dormant period. 28

31 UNIQUE NAME:Juglans Regia COMMON NAME: Common Walnut MATURE HEIGHT: METRES SIZES AVAILABLE: 30-45CM GIRTH Description: The Common Walnut is a large tree that produces fantastic crops of walnuts year upon year. This tree has medium sized leaves that are bright green, turning to yellow in the autumn time, with the nuts appearing in late summer/autumn. The bark of Juglans Regia is smooth, unlike that of the Black Walnut which takes on a fissured appearance from a young age. 29

32 UNIQUE NAME:Parrotia Persica COMMON NAME: Persian Parrotia MATURE HEIGHT: 6-8 METRES SIZES AVAILABLE: 2-6 METRES TALL Description: A notable feature of this stunning beauty is that specimens are often wider than they are tall. One of the finest small trees for autumn colour, giving a display of crimson, purple red and gold. A splendid choice for gardens, it does well in most soils 30

33 UNIQUE NAME:Quercus Robor Fastigiata COMMON NAME: Upright Oak MATURE HEIGHT: METRES SIZES AVAILABLE: 4-10 METRES TALL Description: A very attractive, columnar selection which is exceptionally well suited to narrow spaces and avenues. In autumn, the dark green leaf turns yellowish brown and often stays on the tree until the following spring. 31
