Most maples are easy to grow, very tolerant of soil and situation, are very hardy and relatively fast-growing. Many of them also provide spectacular autumn colour. Acer campestre A common sight in our hedgerows, this very tough small to medium sized tree is suitable both as an ornamental specimen or as part of a woodland grouping. Forms a round headed tree with quite corky stems, even on young trees. Has 5-lobed, mid green leaves that turn brilliant yellow in the autumn. Grows well in sun or shade, acid or alkaline soil and will tolerate damp areas too. Acer capillipes Considered by many to be the most attractive of the Snake-bark maples - the grey-green bark is very clearly striped with bright white, whilst the new shoots are a lovely dark red. Autumn colour is spectacular - the tree is ablaze with shades of yellow, orange and crimson. Relatively fast-growing, but never getting huge, this is a superb choice for a small garden specimen tree. 9 Acer lobellii Acer negundo A fast growing, deciduous tree with bright light green, pinnate leaves made up of 3-7 leaflets. These turn a superb yellow in the autumn. Fairly insignificant greenish-yellow flowers are borne in pendant clusters. This is an ideal tree for lighting up those dark areas in the garden, it is hardy and tough. Acer pensylvanicum A beautiful tree suitable for smaller spaces. Broadly upright in habit, with large, 3-lobed, bright green leaves that turn a clear yellow in the autumn. The real treat with this tree is in the winter when the leaves have dropped and you can see the green stems that have very conspicuous white stripes. Acer platanoides A very fast growing, tough and hardy tree. Is much more ornamental than most as it bears very conspicuous clusters of lime green flowers in the spring, just before the leaves come out. The leaves are large, pale to bright green with deeply cut edges. In autumn they turn a clear, deep yellow before dropping. The winged fruits often remain on tree right through the winter. Acer pseudoplatanus The native Sycamore, seen in fields and woods up and down the country. Its easy to grow in the most exposed sites, forming an excellent windbreak. Quickly growing into a large tree Acer pseudoplatanus 'Purpureum' A very useful tree, foliage is green on top with a rich purple underneath. It looks very dramatic when blowing in the wind. Acer pseudoplatanus 'Simon Louis Freres' A slow growing maple with most unusual foliage. The leaves open pale pink, becoming heavily mottled with differing shades of green and white. Definitely one to grow to grow if you want an eye catching tree all summer long. Acer pseudoplatanus 'Worley' We think this is the best gold leaved Maple you can get. Has leaves that open yellow and retain their colour through out the summer, the leaf stalks are an attractive red. Acer rubrum Acer saccharinum Formerly named Acer dasycarpum. The 'Silver Maple' forms quite a large tree with stunning silvery foliage caused by the silver undersides to the mid green leaves. In the autumn the leaves turn varying shades of reds and yellows. The bark is smooth and greyish in colour. Acer virginicum rubrum This may not be the correct name for this tree, but nobody has been able to identify it more accurately. In the summer the leaves are large and deep green, turning brilliant shades of red in the autumn. However it is over the winter that the tree really performs as the stems are a brilliant, shiny red. When the light catches it the effect is stunning. 10 Ornamental Trees Alnus If your soil is very wet, then look no further - Alders are superb trees for a damp site, thriving where few other trees would grow. Some species will provide a fast-growing windbreak whilst others make fine ornamental garden specimens with super foliage and large catkins in early spring. Alnus cordata and A. incana will grow equally well on drier sites. A. incana Aurea is one of our favourite trees for a small garden. Alnus cordata A fast growing tree to 20m plus. Conical in shape with striking, bright green, glistening foliage. In early spring it is festooned with yellow catkins and then in autumn bears round, woody fruits that persist well on the tree. Unlike other Alders this one thrives in thin, dry soils. Most dramatic in the spring when it produces large quantities of very pretty, yellow catkins. These are followed by dark green leaves, often sticky when young. Often used for windbreaks. Alnus incana A very tough tree for the most exposed sites, growing quickly up to 20m (70ft) plus. A large crop of yellow-red catkins are produced during February and March, followed by dark green leaves, often grey-white underneath and hairy. In autumn bears small, round, woody fruits. Alnus incana 'Aurea' A much smaller tree than its larger relatives, only reaching 10m (30ft). This is the one to grow if you are wanting a decorative form. Has striking, bright reddishyellow or orange shoots in the winter, followed by bright yellow leaves in the spring. These fade to pale green over the summer. The catkins are conspicuously tinged with red. This a very attractive, slow growing tree, well worth a place in the garden. Alnus rubra pinnatisecta Amelanchier Amelanchier canadensis Popular small tree that gives a wonderful, year round display. In spring it bears masses of small, white flowers, just as the foliage is emerging to provide a beautiful coppery backdrop. Over the summer the leaves change to bright green before turning to yellows and reds in the autumn. Bears bright red berries, much loved by the birds! 11 Ornamental Trees Betula Birches make some of the most valuable trees for any garden - striking catkins, ornamental bark, super autumn colour and a graceful canopy which casts very light shade. These trees are fast-growing and hardy, preferring a light sandy soil in full sun. B. pendula, the Silver Birch, is native to the British Isles, the others mainly originate in either northern Asia or the United States. Betula nigra River Birch Fthd cm RB (W) each per 10 Betula papyrifera An underused yet highly decorative conical tree. When young the stems are reddish-brown, covered in copious lighter dots. As the tree matures the bark becomes white and starts to peel in large layers, revealing the new pale orange-brown skin underneath. As the name suggests the bark really does look like paper as it peels off. Bears yellow catkins in spring and dark green leaves that turn brilliant hues of yellow and orange. Betula pendula This is the variety that you seen in all the woods and fields through out the country, however this should not put you off as it has many uses with in the garden. Has a fairly upright habit with pendulous ends to the branches. The bark becomes white and quite warty with age, often with very clear rings all around the trunk. The leaves are diamond shaped and mid green, turning yellow in the autumn. Makes an excellent windbreak tree. Bears small yellow catkins in spring. Thrives in poor soils and does not take kindly to feeding or mulching. Betula pendula 'Laciniata' A super form of birch with very pretty, deeply cut foliage. A light and graceful tree with semi-pendulous branches that is very decorative and also very tough. Betula pendula 'Purpurea' A purple-leaved form of birch - the leaves make a bold contrast to the silver -grey bark. Superb specimen tree. Betula pendula 'Youngii' A beautiful weeping tree, similar to the above in that the branchlets hang right down to the ground, waterfall fashion, however this ones forms a broader dome shape overall. The bark becomes white and fissured with age. They start to weep when young so you don't have to wait long before you start to really enjoy them. They look wonderful when planted near a pond where the branches can weep into the water. Otherwise a single specimen in the middle of your lawn would be stunning. Betula pubescens This species does well in a wide variety of situations, especially in damp locations. Its habit is more upright than Silver Birch. It's new shoots are covered in down. Bark becomes white with age. 12 Ornamental Trees Betula utilis jaquemontii Probably the most popular Birch of recent years, the dazzling, silvery white bark developing at quite a young age. This is one of the best garden trees available nowadays. Has oval, mid green leaves that turn an attractive golden yellow in the autumn. Bears yellow catkins in spring. Himalayan Birch Fthd cm (Y) each per 10 Fthd cm (B) each per 10 Carpinus The Hornbeam was one of the last trees to enter England before the land-bridge with Continental Europe was eroded by the English Channel some 6000 years ago. It is extremely useful as hedging and as a background tree as it will thrive on almost any reasonable soil. Carpinus betulus At first glance it looks very much like a Beech, but in actual fact is tolerant of a far wider range of soils than Beech. Firstly pyramid shaped, then developing into a much more rounded tree. Has mid-green leaves with highly toothed edges to them. The bark is grey and smooth to the touch. Bears yellow male catkins and greenish-yellow female catkins, up to 12cm (5") long. These are followed by clusters of green, then brown fruits. This is tough tree that tolerates a poor atmosphere so is good for industrial areas. White blossom in the spring are followed by large deep red berries which persist through winter. Huge thorns are very decorative, but be careful! Autumn colour is superb, a mixture of oranges and scarlets. Crataegus laevigata 'Paul's Scarlet' We have the best form of this double flowered Hawthorn. Has striking bright pinky-red flowers in late spring borne in profusion. May produce small red berries in the autumn but unfortunately often does not. Again this is a lovely small tree for where space is tight. Crataegus laevigata 'Plena' Rounded, thorny, deciduous tree with 3-5 lobed, small, dark green leaves. Bears clusters of fragrant, double white flowers that fade to a petty pink, in late spring. These are followed later on by bunches of small, round red fruits. A good choice if you want to encourage birds into the garden. Makes an ideal tree for the smaller garden. Crataegus laevigata 'Punicea' Attractive single red flowers are borne in dense clusters. 13 Crataegus laevigata 'Rosea Flore Pleno' A wonderfully pretty tree. Bears masses of dense clusters of double, pale pink flowers. Plant with C. 'Paul's Scarlet' to make a truly spectacular display. Ornamental Trees Double Pink May Std (Bush) each per 10 Std (Standard) 8-10cm gth (Y) each per 10 Crataegus monogyna The common hedgerow tree seen covered in masses of pretty, fragrant white flowers during May. Is very thorny! Has diamond shaped, deeply lobed, dark green leaves, with paler undersides. In the autumn produces masses of bright red berries that are loved by our native and visiting birds. Height 7m (22ft), responds very well to pruning so may be used as hedging. Crataegus persimilis 'Prunifolia' Rounded, deciduous tree with stout thorns and glossy, dark green leaves, turning red and orange in the autumn. In early summer produces round, flat clusters of white flowers, with pink anthers, followed by bright red fruits. These last a long time on the tree so give a good show through the winter. Crataegus x lavallei 'Carrierei Strong growing, spreading tree with often twisted, spiny branches and dark green leaves that remain long into the winter. They often turn an attractive red. In early summer produces large white flowers in upright clusters, followed by attractive orange fruits. Davidia Davidia involucrata Discovered in Sichuan, China in the mid-1800's, the Handkerchief Tree is a delight - in late spring on mature trees large clear white bracts surround the dark flower centres and make this tree a unique sight. The large leaves are dark green, leathery and serrated at the edge. Grows best on a rich soil that does not dry out too readily, but tolerates lime. The native beech Fagus sylvatica is one of the most valuable trees for large-scale parkland planting, but there are many variations which make fine garden trees - the Dawyck beeches in particular are some of the best foliage trees to be grown. Easily grown in most soils, but especially suited to chalk. Fagus sylvatica A large and noble tree for use either a specimen, in a woodland setting or as hedging. Has oval, wavy edged leaves, silky haired and pale green to begin with, then becoming a glossy, dark green. In the autumn they turn a rich copper colour. Thrives in sun or shade on any soil except very wet. Its dramatic purple foliage really stands out. Excellent for commemorative plantings. It will be there for generations! Fagus sylvatica 'Dawyk' A wonderful fastigiate form of beech, perfect for where space is more limited. Bright mid-green foliage held tightly to the main stem, the Dawyk beeches make superb focal points in a formal garden. 14 Ornamental Trees Fagus sylvatica 'Dawyk Gold' Bright golden foliage, particularly stunning in Spring as the new leaves emerge. Fagus sylvatica 'Dawyk Purple' A dark purple form, with the same narrow columnar growth. Fantastic tree for a small garden, or in a difficult corner position. Fagus sylvatica heterophylla An unusual and extraordinary tree with light green, very finely cut leaves. The result is a very dense yet feathery deciduous tree. Grow it as a specimen tree. Fagus sylvatica 'Pendula' One of the very best large weeping trees - the main branches emerge horizontally and from these the smaller branches descend almost vertically, giving a tent-like appearance. A fine specimen where there is room. Fagus sylvatica 'Purpurea Pendula' Delightful small weeping tree with deep purple-black foliage. Only reaches 3m (9 feet), so makes a perfect lawn specimen for a smaller garden. Fagus sylvatica 'Riversii' Deepest purple foliage. A large tree of very stately habit, requires plenty of room to develop its beautiful canopy. We think this is the best of all the purple leaved forms available. When in full leaf the leaves can appear as if they are glowing. Grow in full sun to get the full benefit. One of our favourites. Golden Beech Fthd cm RB (Y) each per 10 Fthd cm RB (W) each per 10 Fthd cm RB (B) each per 10 Gleditsia A very tough group of trees which will grow in rubble or through paving - ideal for that hot dusty corner! The small leaflets cast a light shade and the colours are bright and remain so throughout the summer. Native to North America. Gleditsia triacanthos A spreading, deciduous tree with feathery, frond-like light green foliage. The stems are covered in large thorns. In the autumn the foliage turns yellow and long, twisted seed pods are formed. This is a particularly good tree for industrial areas where it can cope with the atmosphere. 15 Laburnum x watereri 'Vossii' The best of all the Laburnums, quite a small tree which bears huge, pendent chains of golden yellow flowers in early summer. This looks stunning when under planted with Allium Purple Sensation. Has grey, hairy young shoots to mature to a rich dark green. Liquidamber styraciflua 'Worplesden' Maple-like tree with huge, deeply lobed, glossy midgreen leaves. The young shoots often have curious corky wings to them. In the autumn the leaves turn an amazing range of yellows and oranges. Makes a superb specimen or street tree. Liriodendron Liriodendron tulipifera Vigorous, upright tree, with deciduous, almost square shaped leaves that turn a brilliant yellow. The real joy of this tree is the wonderful green and orange tulipshaped flowers borne in profusion during mid summer. Unfortunately you will have to wait until the tree is fairly mature but it is well worth it as there is nothing quite like these flowers. Sweet Gum Fthd cm RB (B) each per 10 Sweet Gum Fthd cm RB (B) each per 10 Tulip Tree Fthd cm RB (R) each per 10 Malus Crab apples are some of the finest garden trees for year-round interest - spring blossom, super foliage and brightly coloured fruit in autumn make these a must for every small garden. There are a huge number of hybrids with different colours and growth patterns, but do not overlook the species which are highly attractive and deserve to be more widely grown. Very tough and hardy, these will grow on any soil which is not waterlogged. Make a super windbreak or edging to an orchard. Malus floribunda A very popular small flowering tree, with long arching branches. Very beautiful when in flower, crimson buds opening to clusters of pale pink flowers. Fruits are small, red and yellow. Early flowering. 16 Ornamental Trees Malus toringo sargentii Probably one of the best for autumn colours with in this genus. A delightful small tree that is smothered in small white flowers in spring. Bright red cherry-like fruits in autumn. Malus tschonowskii An attractive, strong growing tree of erect conical habit. The flowers are white tinged with pink. The autumn colour is breath-taking, orange, yellow, scarlet and purple. In spring bears pink-flushed white flowers followed by red-flushed green fruit. Malus x moerlandsii 'Liset' A small round compact tree, with purplish young foliage. Flowers are rosy-red and open from crimson buds. These are followed by cherry-like dark purple fruits. Malus x moerlandsii 'Profusion' New leaves are purple. Flowers are produced in great profusion and are deep purplish red, and slightly fragrant. They are followed by deep red fruits. Malus x purpurea 'Aldenhamensis' A small open tree. Leaves purplish becoming bronzegreen in late summer. Flowers are deep wine-red, single or semi-double. They are followed by reddish purple fruits. Malus x purpurea 'Eleyi' Spreading tree with purple-green leaves, opening bronze-purple. Dark red-purple flowers are produced in late spring. These are followed by purple fruits. Malus x schiedeckeri 'Red Jade' Weeping form with single, white and pink flowers, opening from dark red buds, followed by long lasting red fruits. A delightful shape, and quite at home as the centrepiece in a small garden. Easy to grow in most soils, they prefer a position in full sun. Do not grow close to drains or buildings as the roots can become invasive, particularly on heavy clay. Populus alba This spreading, deciduous tree has wonderful silver foliage bought about by the white, hairy undersides to the large, lobed leaves. When the wind catches it the effect is stunning. These leaves turn yellow in autumn. In early spring pendent red male and green female catkins are produced. It does get quite large but if you have the space it's well worth it.
