The site contains the complete catalogue in more detail and other products and over 250 photographs. It is regularly updated and includes many items of interest about the Garden Centre and gardening. The site also has features which are not possible to include in the catalogue, and these will make choosing the right plants easier for you. It can work out how many plants you need for any particular length of hedge, and help you select those plants which would be most suitable for the conditions prevailing at the planting site. BUCKINGHAM AQUATICS SHOP AND MAIL ORDER SERVICE For those close enough to make a personal visit, we have an Aquatics Centre, which carries a good range of tropical fish, marine fish and in season cold water fish. Also available are most dry goods necessary for ponds and aquariums, including pumps, pond liners, pre-formed ponds, fish tanks, fish food, treatments, water features, aquatic compost, waterplants for both indoor and outdoor, plus many other goods. We would recommend trying to visit on a week day rather than a week-end as the staff will have more time to give any advice that is needed. We have an Aquatics Mail Order Website for ordering goods for despatch by mail order only. This can be found at Telephone number ABOUT THE GARDEN CENTRE Buckingham Garden Centre is situated approximately one mile west of Buckingham on the A421. The Garden Centre is open seven days a week but with restricted trading hours on Sundays. Plants listed in this catalogue can be inspected or collected during the planting season, as described in the paragraph Availability, page 32, but as the plants are not all grown on the Buckingham Nursery do check before coming to collect. The Garden Centre offers visitors not only the catalogued plants in the correct season, but also a wide range of container grown stock which is available all year. This includes ornamental trees, shrubs, climbers, perennials, heathers, herbs, alpines, ornamental grasses and hardy ferns. For the plant hunter we have some unusual plants which are not generally available at garden centres, and we are always willing to try to obtain special requests for hardy nursery stock for individual customers. We do not have a wholesale department, but for customers needing large quantities of plants we are pleased to quote. Our plant quality is second to none in the area so we would highly recommend a personal visit to inspect our plants. Also, to help you choose your hedge we have samples of many of the hedges planted up on the nursery, although as many are deciduous it would be better to come and see these during the summer months. For other information about plants there is an Information Centre manned by our experienced and knowledgeable staff. Our garden shop contains a good range of chemicals, fertilisers, tools, and many other requisites for your garden. We have the widest range of seeds for miles around and there is always an excellent range of house and conservatory plants to choose from and a superb choice of planted containers for indoors and outside, and set hanging baskets for summer or winter use. Outside we carry a selection of pots and ornaments, a good stock of peats, peat-based and peat-free composts, ornamental bark, gravel, sand, fencing, paving, sheds, greenhouses and garden buildings. A range of good quality garden furniture is available in summer. The Garden Centre has recently been totally upgraded to a very high standard and is now fully accessible to disabled people, and the extended car park offers ample parking for all visitors. THE GARDENER S RETREAT - COFFEE SHOP/RESTAURANT The Gardener s Retreat has now built up a sound reputation for good, wholesome, home-cooked food. The menu varies daily, and includes delicious freshly prepared breakfasts, lunches, home-baked cakes, coffee and tea. Vegetarian dishes are always available. The coffee shop, with both indoor and outdoor seating, is particularly popular with those coming long distances to collect their plants. Party bookings are also welcome, and, like the Garden Centre, we are pleased to say that the coffee shop is also fully accessible to wheelchair users. The restaurant is used in the evening for talks to Gardening Clubs who either have just coffee and biscuits or an evening meal. 4 HEDGING, TREES, SHRUBS AND CONIFERS HARDINESS In very severe winter conditions Berberis darwinii, Escallonia, Griselinia, Common Laurel, Lonicera, Pyracantha, Rosemary and Viburnum tinus can suffer from die-back even when established, but they will recover and the dead wood will need removing. All plants, especially when young, can suffer from severe weather conditions but those already mentioned and Elaeagnus, Holly, Lavender, Osmanthus, Photinia, Santolina and Scots Pine do need extra protection against the cold. Wind is particularly damaging when the ground is frozen and there is no protective snow cover. POSITION All plants listed will grow in a sunny or partially shady position but those which will grow well under other conditions are noted. SIZE Trees and conifers the approximate height and spread in 20 years and the ultimate height. Shrubs the approximate height and spread in 20 years. Hedges the range of heights we recommend. SIZES OFFERED The size we offer for the plants is the height when despatched. As they are young some will not be very bushy yet, especially the 4-5ft trees. However, with correct planting and pruning they will quickly develop into sturdy plants. Planting and pruning instructions will be sent with the plants. SOIL Unless otherwise stated the plants listed will all grow in any reasonable soil. CELL GROWN PLANTS These have the advantage of having been raised in root trainer cells 4cm x 3.5cm x 12cm deep. The cells have been designed to prevent roots spiralling and to promote fibrous root growth. As the roots are not disturbed when planted out, establishment is very rapid. They also have the advantage that they can be planted at any time of the year. Sold only in packs of ten plants. POT GROWN PLANTS These are usually in 9cm square pots and sometimes larger, and can be planted at any time of the year. BARE ROOT AND SEEDLING PLANTS Bare root plants are vegetatively produced and seedlings grown from seed, both being grown in the open ground. TRANSPLANTED A plant, when transplanted, has been lifted from the ground and replanted. In doing so the root structure is broken, which encourages a better fibrous root system and makes the plant stronger and bushier. POISONOUS PLANTS Toxicity of plants is very variable but those notorious for causing skin problems are marked or poisonous marked. EVERGREEN/DECIDUOUS Evergreen plants drop their leaves in small numbers throughout the year so will always look fully clothed with leaves. A fast growing, deciduous native plant with shiny leaves, producing yellow catkins in March and attractive false cones, which provide a good supply of bird food in spring. Ideal for very wet situations, and is useful for preventing soil erosion. This variety is particularly useful where rabbits or stock could damage the bark as it is rarely eaten by them. HEDGE Trim July or August. For hedges 6ft or more. Plant 2ft apart. TREE 30ft x 12ft in 20 years, ultimate height 70ft. ALDER, GREY (Alnus incana). A fast growing deciduous plant, with dark-green leaves grey-white underneath. Yellow-brown catkins appear before the leaves in spring followed in autumn by false cones which are good bird food. Ideal for cold or wet situations, and useful for preventing soil erosion. HEDGE Trim July or August. For hedges 6ft or more. Plant 2ft apart. TREE 40ft x 12ft in 20 years, ultimate height 80ft. ALDER, ITALIAN (Alnus cordata). Dense, fast-growing deciduous plant with glossy bright green heartshaped leaves. Yellow-brown catkins in spring before the leaves appear, followed in autumn by large false cones which are good bird food. Ideal for wet situations and thrives on chalk soils. HEDGE Trim July or August. For hedges 6ft or more. Plant 2ft apart. TREE 45ft x 18ft in 20 years, ultimate height 80ft. AMELANCHIER (A. lamarckii) (Snowy Mespilus) (June Berry). A showy deciduous hedge with leaves opening coppery-red, turning to soft green in summer and then to shades of red, orange and yellow in autumn. The plants are smothered with one inch wide white flowers in spring and these are followed by edible black berries. 4-5ft plants have a clear stem suitable for growing as trees. See also page 18 for Amelanchier Robin Hill. HEDGE Trim after flowering. For hedges 4-6ft. Plant 18ins apart. TREE 10ft x 10ft in 20 years, ultimate height 15ft. AMELANCHIER OBELISK. See page 15. Due to its erect habit this variety of Amelanchier will make a very good, easily maintained hedge if planted 12 to 18ins apart. ASH (Fraxinus excelsior). Fast growing, long-lived native deciduous tree with wide spreading surface roots. Dark green leaves and large pendent fruit clusters in autumn. These provide good bird food in spring. Wind tolerant. Thrives on deep lime-rich soils. It is not advisable to plant Ash in a hedge as it will give rise to gaps forming in the hedge due to the large size of its foliage. Tree guards should be used on Ash as it is prone to stock and rabbit damage. TREE 25ft x 15ft in 20 years, ultimate height 100ft. ASH, CLARET (Fraxinus angustifolia Raywood). Wide spreading deciduous tree with global shape and breathtaking autumn colouring when shoot tips turn royal purple followed by the interior leaves turning orange, pink and gold. In summer, leaflets are glossy rich green above and paler beneath. Pendent fruit clusters in autumn provide good bird food in spring. Tree guards should be used as Ash is prone to stock and rabbit damage. TREE 25ft x 15ft in 20 years, ultimate height 70ft. ASPEN (Populus tremula). Fast growing, long-lived, slender suckering deciduous native tree with toothed, round, long-stemmed leaves that open coppery-green, turning grey-green, and quiver in the slightest breeze and turn butter yellow in autumn. Any soil, prefers moist conditions. TREE 30ft x 15ft in 20 years, ultimate height 50ft. BEECH, GREEN (Fagus sylvatica). Native plant with superb foliage, medium green leaves turning rich copper in autumn. Not suitable for heavy or wet soil where Hornbeam is preferable. Shade tolerant. If a Beech hedge is trimmed in late summer, the leaves remain on better during the winter. Do not plant Beech in a frost pocket as it will get damaged. HEDGE Retains copper foliage throughout the winter. Trim July or August. For hedges 3ft upwards. New foliage tinged red turning green with age. Shade tolerant. HEDGE Trim after flowering. For hedges 4-7ft. Plant 1 /2-2ft apart. SHRUB 8ft x 10ft. BERBERIS DARWINII COMPACTA. A new compact form of Berberis darwinii with a very dense habit. Small, glossy, holly-like, dark green leaves on slightly angled stems. In spring it will be covered with rich orange flowers, then in autumn edible blue barberries. Occasional flowers in autumn in mild weather. New foliage tinged red turning green with age. Shade tolerant, evergreen. HEDGE Trim after flowering. For hedges 2-3ft. Plant 1ft apart. SHRUB 3ft x 3ft. BERBERIS FRIKARTII TELSTAR. Very dense, neat, prickly, vigorous, evergreen hedge with glossy, lance-shaped leaves, dark green above and silver underneath. Clusters of yellow flowers in spring followed in autumn by blue-black edible barberries. Will quickly make an impenetrable low barrier. Shade tolerant. HEDGE Trim if necessary after flowering. Dense, prickly, deciduous hedge with masses of small yellow flowers in spring followed by edible bright red berries in autumn. Green leaves turn an unsurpassable brilliant red in autumn. Dense, upright, fast growing evergreen with long, glossy, heavily spined leaves, dark green above, pale green beneath. Masses of clusters of yellow, or sometimes red-tinged flowers wreath the shoots in spring followed by edible, bloomy, blue-black egg-shaped fruits in autumn. Quickly forms an impenetrable hedge. Compact, deciduous, prickly hedge with rich reddishpurple leaves turning vivid red in autumn. Small yellow flowers in spring followed by some edible red berries in autumn. HEDGE Trim in winter. For hedges 3-5ft. Plant 2ft apart. SHRUB 5ft x 6ft. BERBERIS STENOPHYLLA. Prickly, dense, fast growing evergreen hedge with masses of golden yellow flowers on graceful arching branches April to May, followed by edible blue barberries in autumn. Occasional flowers in autumn in mild weather. Shade tolerant. HEDGE Trim after flowering. For hedges 6-10ft. Plant 2ft apart. SHRUB 9ft x 11ft. BIRCH, PAPER (Betula papyrifera) (Canoe Birch). Striking, graceful, deciduous tree with outstanding gleaming white bark which peels away in large strips on mature trees. Attractive horizontal bands appear on the trunk as the tree ages. Large dark green leaves turn yellow in autumn. TREE 25ft x 12ft in 20 years, ultimate height 90ft. BIRCH, SILVER (Betula pendula, B. verrucosa). Graceful, native, deciduous tree of upright habit but with graceful drooping branchlets. Bark orange-red on young stems, soon changing to silver with distinctive black arrows. BLACKTHORN (Prunus spinosa) (Sloe). Dense, prickly, native, deciduous plant with new shoots finely downy becoming smooth by winter, purple in sun or green in shade. Masses of snow white flowers appear in March before the leaves, and these are followed by sloes which turn from purple to black in autumn. Any soil, but will thrive on quite poor soil. HEDGE Trim as necessary. For hedges 3-10ft. Plant 18ins apart. TREE/SHRUB 13ft x 10ft in 20 years, ultimate height 13ft. BOX, COMMON (Buxus sempervirens). Very dense small-leaved native evergreen, with dark green glossy, leathery leaves which give off an unusual sweet smell. Small tufty yellow flowers appear from late winter. Slow growing and shade tolerant. Box has traditionally been used for topiary work. HEDGE Suitable for formal trimmed hedges. Trim August or September. For hedges 1-9ft. Plant 9-15ins apart. TREE 10ft x 5ft in 20 years, ultimate height 30ft. BOX, DWARF (Buxus sempervirens Suffruticosa). As Common Box above but very slow growing and with slightly smaller leaves. Ideal edging shrub or for knot gardens. HEDGE Trim August or September. For hedges up to 2ft. Plant 4-6ins apart. SHRUB 3ft x 3ft. BOX, FAULKNER (Buxus microphylla Faulkner). Similar to Common Box but even denser habit with larger (1-2cm) very shiny green leaves. Excellent selection which is very frost resistant. HEDGE Suitable for formal trimmed hedges. A new form which grows naturally into a rounded shape, thus giving the appearance of a trimmed plant, but without pruning. Very dense habit with glossy green evergreen foliage. Excellent specimen plant. * Ball rooted or pot grown. SHRUB 2ft tall in 20 years. Approximate 3 1 /2ft tall when fully grown. BOX, VARIEGATED (Buxus sempervirens Elegantissima). A most attractive variegated form of Common Box, having mid-green leaves with irregular creamy-white margins. Makes a very dense compact hedge or a neat specimen evergreen shrub. HEDGE Suitable for formal trimmed hedges. Trim August or September. For hedges 1-4ft. Plant 9-15ins apart. SHRUB 4ft x 3ft. BUCKTHORN, ALDER (Rhamnus frangula). A large, bushy, native, deciduous shrub with glossy, dark green leaves which turn red in autumn. When bearing the half inch wide red fruits, which turn black in autumn, this shrub is very attractive. The fruits provide good food for birds. Any soil but likes marshy ground. SHRUB 13ft x 8ft. BUCKTHORN, COMMON OR PURGING (Rhamnus cathartica). A large, dense, native, deciduous shrub or small tree with spiny branches, which are attractive in autumn when laden with masses of shining red fruits which mature to black. The yellowish-green flowers borne in May attract Brimstone butterflies. Its glossy dark green leaves turn yellow in autumn. Tolerant of chalky soil. SHRUB 15ft x 12ft. BUCKTHORN, SEA (Hippophae rhamnoides). Fast growing, native, thorny, deciduous plant, excellent by the sea. Slender silvery leaves, masses of persistent orange-yellow berries in autumn which stay on the bush all winter. Berries high in vitamin C and can be used in marmalade. Well drained soil. HEDGE Trim in August. For hedges 5-8ft. Plant 2ft apart. SHRUB 8ft x 8ft. CHERRIES, ORNAMENTAL see page 18, CHERRY, PLUM see Plum, Myrobalan, page 9. CHERRY, BIRD (Prunus padus). Attractive, native, deciduous tree which bears masses of five inch long spikes of almond-scented white flowers in May. These are followed by bitter black fruits which birds love, hence the name Bird Cherry. Any well drained soil, and will even thrive on quite poor soil. TREE 25ft x 15ft in 20 years, ultimate height 35ft. CHERRY, WILD (Prunus avium) (Gean). Vigorous, native, deciduous tree with masses of clusters of conspicuous white flowers opening with the leaves in April followed by edible fruit in summer. Leaves crimson in autumn. Any well drained soil. TREE 35ft x 25ft in 20 years, ultimate height 60ft. CHESTNUT, HORSE (Aesculus hippocastanum). Beautiful large, fast growing, flowering, deciduous tree with masses of large candle-like white flowers in May followed by conker fruits in autumn. Sticky terminal winter buds and horseshoe leaf scars are distinctive features. TREE 30ft x 12ft in 20 years, ultimate height 90ft. CHESTNUT, RED HORSE see Ornamental Trees section, Horse Chestnut, Red, page 19. CHESTNUT, SWEET (Castanea sativa). Fast growing, deciduous tree, introduced by the Romans. Large lance-shaped, mid-green leaves and masses of small, heavily scented cream flowers on showy catkins produced on young shoots in July. Edible sweet chestnuts form in favourable years. Good coppice tree. Needs an open sunny position to fruit well. TREE 30ft x 20ft in 20 years, ultimate height 60ft. CHRISTMAS TREE see Spruce, Norway page12 (Caucasian Fir is sometimes used). CORNELIAN CHERRY (Cornus mas). Vigorous, bushy, twiggy deciduous shrub with dark green foliage which turns red-purple in autumn. Many bunches of small yellow flowers on the bare stems in February. These are followed by bright red edible cherry-like fruit. Makes an excellent hedge. HEDGE Trim in spring. For hedges 4-6ft. Plant 2-3ft apart. SHRUB 10ft x 8ft. COTONEASTER FRANCHETII. Forms a large informal hedge which will fill the air with fragrance when in flower, or, as a single specimen, will make an attractive shrub. 16 COLLECTIONS MIXED NATIVE HEDGING Mixed native hedges are a common sight in the British countryside and are part of our rich heritage. Many have been destroyed in recent years to enable larger machinery to be used on farms. This has meant a reduction in habitat for a multitude of wild creatures which are beneficial. Fortunately, some old hedges are being restored and new ones planted, and even if you only have a relatively small garden a native hedge can look very attractive, especially if your garden backs onto open fields. A native hedge can be kept to a formal shape if clipped regularly, or it can be left to have a wilder look. However cared for, the fact that it is a mixture of plants gives it plenty of interest at different times of the year. Adding climbing honeysuckles to a mixed native hedge is very successful and adds wonderful perfume and flower in summer, and if an evergreen variety is used, some foliage in winter. SEEDLINGS. We will select a mixture of native species normally found in established country hedges. About half the mixture will be 2-3ft seedling Quickthorn and the balance selected from 2-3ft seedling Alder Buckthorn, Blackthorn, Field Maple and Spindle and 1 /2-2ft Dog Rose, Dogwood, Guelder Rose, Hazel and Sweet Briar Rose. Occasionally, we may substitute with 2-3ft Common Alder, Common Buckthorn and 1 /2-2ft Wayfaring Tree or other native hedging plants. For every 10 yard length of hedge we recommend 25 plants (10 metres = 27 plants), giving an average planting distance of 14ins between plants, but be guided by the planting distances listed for individual varieties. For a denser or stock-proof hedge we recommend a double row planted 20ins apart, 15ins between rows, that is 36 plants for a 10 yard length (40 plants for a 10 metre length). TRANSPLANTS. Native trees, especially Oak, can make a valuable contribution to wildlife habitat and some will have an economic value as a source of home grown hardwood. It works really well where there is nothing but the hedge, as it makes the hedge colourful without losing its formality. If used with a planted bed in front, the colourful tones in the hedge can be carried down into the planting bed. The basic green plants in the hedge will be Green Beech 2-3ft (page 2), Hornbeam 2-3ft (page 7) and Field Maple 2-3ft (page 8), which should be planted in groups of at least 5. The hedge would be interspersed with 2 Golden Privet 2-3ft (page 10), 2 Purple Beech 2-3ft (page 3) and 1 Cotoneaster franchetii 1 /2-2ft (page 4). The first 20ft of hedge would therefore contain 5 Green Beech, 2 Golden Privet, 5 Hornbeam, 2 Purple Beech, 5 Field Maple and 1 Cotoneaster franchetii. For hedges 3ft upwards plant 1ft apart. We may occasionally substitute with equally suitable plants. Minimum order of 20 plants to cover a distance of 20ft (7m). Number of Plants Price per Plant p p ALL SEASONS INTEREST HEDGES We have made up two carefully selected collections of plants which will give you interest all the year round. Their growth habit is such that planted together at 2ft (60cm) intervals they will develop into a dense screen 4-6ft ( m) high, making it eye-catching all year round. They could be used as a hedge or a background for a flower bed. Alternatively, if planted further apart and allowed to grow to their full size, they would make an attractive mixed shrubbery. Some of the ornamental shrubs listed on page 15 would make interesting additions to these collections. COLLECTION - SOFT HUES A wonderful selection of deciduous plants which give interest with flowers or foliage all year. In late winter into spring, the first flowers to open will be on the Winter Honeysuckle (page 15) with its 3 /4 inch long, scented, creamywhite flowers. Then will follow the snowy-white flowers and attractive spring leaf colouring of the Amelanchier (page 2), followed by the very many clusters of pale-pink flowers of Deutzia Mont Rose (page 15). In the summer the air will be filled with the delicious fragrance of the Mock Orange (see page 9, Philadelphus). In the autumn, the leaves of the Amelanchier will give hues of red, orange and yellow, then all will fall to let the dainty white-tinged-pink heavily-scented flowers of the Viburnum fragrans (page 12) show their beauty throughout the winter days. Soft Hues Collection (5 plants to cover approx. 10ft/3m) 9.75 each 5 or more Collections 8.95 each COLLECTION - EVERGREEN AND EVER-INTERESTING Many evergreen hedges, especially some conifers, have little seasonal change, but this collection gives contrasts and interest throughout the year. In May the Berberis darwinii (page 3) will burst into blossom with its rich orange flowers, closely followed by the large bunches of white flowers on the Cotoneaster franchetii (page 4), and Pyracantha Orange Glow (page 10). Whilst bees continue to buzz and collect nectar from the Cotoneaster, the dainty pink flowers of the Escallonia Donard Seedling (page 5) will start to appear, and these will persist throughout the summer. All the year the Photinia fraseri Red Robin (page 9) will enliven the hedge with its splashes of red on the new foliage. Come autumn, bunches of bright orange berries will be found on the Pyracantha, red berries on the Cotoneaster and blue-black barberries on the Berberis. The barberries you can eat or leave for food for wildlife; and eventually all the other berries will provide more food for birds. During the winter months Viburnum tinus (page 12) will be displaying its flat heads of white flowers which have opened from pink buds. Evergreen Collection (6 plants to cover approx. 12ft/4m) each 5 or more Collections each Occasionally, when stocks of a variety run out, we will substitute with a similar variety to keep the collection equally attractive. At the end of the season, we may substitute a smaller pot grown plant for some of the bare-rooted items. Traditionally countryfolk gathered food for free from woods and hedgerows and there are some fascinating recipes to be found for such fares as Hawthorn Suet Roll made using green hawthorn buds! More usual are sloes from blackthorn, nuts from hazel, rose hips from roses. All the following varieties produce edible fruits:- Amelanchier, Berberis, Blackthorn, Cornelian Cherry, Elder, Elaeagnus ebbingei, Hazel, Japanese Quince, Myrobalan Plum, Quickthorn, Rugosa Roses and Sea Buckthorn. Blackberries can be grown to ramble in existing hedges and raspberries can be planted in a new hedge where they will carry fruit if in a sunny position. Also most fruit trees can be planted in or alongside a hedge, as well as wild cherries and crab apples. An edible hedge can be an informal mix of plants, in which case an interesting and informal hedge will be formed, or a single species such as Berberis darwinii can be planted and clipped to a formal shape. With all species you will attract wildlife. Single species are listed in the catalogue, or we can offer our own special mixed edible hedge. Mixed Edible Hedging The basic hedge is 20 plants for a 30ft length (9m) and will consist of 5 Rugosa Rose and 5 Blackthorn with the balance made up from 2 Amelanchier, 2 Cornelian Cherry, 2 Hazel, 2 Myrobalan Plum and 2 Quickthorn, all 2-3ft transplants except Myrobalan Plum which will be 2-3ft seedlings. This will be an attractive hedge with flower, fruit and some good autumn colouring and will be suitable for hedges 4-6ft high. Minimum order of 20 plants to cover a distance of 30ft (9m). 19 HERBS No garden should be without herbs - they are essential to producing good tasty meals, and many are also very ornamental. They can either be grown in a special herb bed, or scattered amongst ornamental borders, but placed so they can be easily harvested. Listed are a selection from the large number we stock, but for others, especially those only available for a more limited season, refer to our website, All varieties listed below are grown in 11cm pots, and need a sunny position to thrive. The leaves of all the herbs can either used fresh when the flavour is best, dried or frozen for winter use. All Herbs, except Bay, 1.65 each, Collection of 5, mixed or same variety, your choice Bay 2.70 each. BAY (Laurus nobilis). Evergreen shrub or small tree with leathery aromatic mid-green leaves with yellow mid-rib and contrasting reddish-brown new stems. Small, yellow, waxy flowers appear in spring followed by green oval berries which turn black in autumn. Leaves may be used fresh or dried and can be added to stock, soup and stews and are used in bouquet garni. Height up to 26ft, spread to 12ft but can be pruned to keep much smaller. BOX. Graceful yet handsome plant with wonderful feathery foliage which looks beautiful in a sunny border. Gives off a delightful aniseed fragrance in sunny weather. Pick leaves regularly for fish dishes, finely chopped for salads, or they can be used by flower arrangers. Spectacular yellow flowers followed by highly aromatic seeds. Good in a kitchen garden where they attract beneficial insects, but away from beans, tomatoes or kohl rabi. Bronze (Foeniculum vulgare Purpureum). Beautiful, feathery, bronze foliage. Height 4-5ft, spread 3ft. Green (Foeniculum vulgare). Outstanding mid-green foliage. Height 5-6ft, spread 3ft. MARJORAM. Very attractive easy to grow herb with aromatic, slightly hairy leaves and heads of tiny purple-pink flowers in summer. New growth should be cut back to near the ground in winter leaving a mat of foliage. Use leaves fresh in many dishes, or they can be dried or frozen. Flowers can be dried as they open for flower arrangements. Good antiseptic and many medicinal uses. Height and spread 18ins. Pot (Origanum onites). Excellent flavoured soft green leaves. Golden (Origanum vulgare Aureum). Leaves are golden. Gold Tipped (Origanum vulgare Gold Tip). Leaves are gold/green variegated with a milder flavour and flowers are pink. MINT. Very vigorous plant with heavily aromatic leaves which are good for mint sauce, jelly or julep and flavouring vegetables and many dishes. Mint also has many medicinal uses. Keep varieties of mint apart as they readily hybridize. Also, as mint is a rapid spreader, it is best restricted in some way, for example, planted in a large pot sunk into the ground. For preserving, cut leaves before the purple flowers appear in summer. Apple (Mentha suaveolens). Roundish, hairy leaves with a scent of combined mint and apples, so more subtle than some mints and good in cooking. Basil (Mentha piperita f. citrata Basil). Leaves green with reddish tinge. Unique scent, sweet and spicy, excellent with tomato and pasta. Eau-de-cologne (Mentha piperita f. citrata). Purple-tinged, roundish, dark green leaves. Delicious scent, to use in fruit dishes with discretion. Excellent for use in the bath. Hang under the hot water tap to perfume water and room. Moroccan (Mentha spicata crispa Moroccan). Undoubtedly the best mint for making mint tea with its clean flavour. Pineapple (Mentha suaveolens Variegata). Less vigorous form with very pretty variegated cream and green leaves. Good in hanging baskets. Spearmint (Mentha spicata) (Common Mint). The most widely grown mint with dark green pointed leaves with serrated edges. OREGANO (Origanum vulgare) (Wild Marjoram). Dark green leaves with pink tinge underneath, slightly hairy and aromatic. Very decorative pink/mauve flowers in summer. Good with tomato dishes, other vegetables and milkbased desserts. Height and spread 18ins. PARSLEY. Best known of all garnishing herbs. Small cream-white flowers in flat heads in summer. Grow in rich, moist soil in sun or partial shade. Use stalks in stews or add chopped leaves, cooked or raw, at the end of food preparation to keep the flavour. Curled (Petroselinum crispum). Aromatic, fresh-flavoured, brightish green leaves, with curled and toothed edges. Height 12-16ins, spread 12ins. French Flat-Leafed (Petroselinum crispum French) (Broad-Leafed Parsley). Flat, dark-green leaves are stronger in flavour to curled parsley. This variety overwinters better as the flat leaves shed the rain or snow ROSEMARY See page 11. Prostrate (Rosmarinus officinalis Prostrata Group). One of the earliest flowering with masses of light-blue flowers in early spring and summer, then often again in autumn. Arching, spreading branches, excellent for pots, trailing over walls or on sunny banks. Use in sprigs or finely chopped with lamb, oily fishes and stews. Height 12ins, spread to 3ft. SAGE. Hardy evergreen with soft, textured green leaves which are highly aromatic. Attractive purple flowers in hot summers. Sage has good healing properties especially for problems in the mouth and throat, and is a very useful culinary herb if used with discretion. Works as a preservative as well. Common (Salvia officinalis) (Garden or Broad-Leafed Sage or Sawge). The most widely grown, very popular variety. Height and spread 2ft. Golden Variegated (Salvia officinalis Icterina). Less vigorous than Common Sage so useful where space is limited. Very attractive leaves, green with gold edges. Slightly less pungent than other Sages. Height and spread 18ins. Purple (Salvia officinalis Purpurascens). A most ornamental form with unusual dusty-purple foliage and mauve-blue flowers in summer. Very attractive if planted alongside silver-leafed plants. Height and spread 28ins. SAVORY, WINTER (Satureja montana) (Mountain Savory). Dark green, spicy, peppery, linear leaves are excellent in bean dishes, and can be substituted for coriander, basil or oregano when these are not available. Crushed they help to alleviate itching from bites and stings. Small, pinkishwhite flowers in summer. Height 12ins, spread 8ins. SORREL, BROAD-LEAFED (Rumex acetosa) (Common or Garden Sorrel). Mid-green, lance-shaped leaves should be picked regularly when young, and the flower heads removed. Magnificent fern with pale green divided fronds contrasting dramatically to the scaly golden-brown midribs in spring maturing to dark green. Evergreen in sheltered positions. 26 CLIMBERS CLIMBERS trained on walls or fences have two major beneficial effects, firstly to cover an otherwise plain or unsightly area and secondly to soften and give life to an inanimate surface. Some of the climbers listed below can also be used for ground cover. In addition, many fruit trees and bushes can be trained as wall cover plants, along with a few species in the hedging section. A wider range of climbers is available to those who call at the Garden Centre. POSITION All plants listed will grow in a sunny or partially shady position but those which will grow well under other conditions are noted. SIZE The approximate sizes quoted apply to height or spread as appropriate if left unpruned. Many plants can be pruned regularly to restrain their size. Evergreen, but may lose its foliage in very hard winters. Average Growth Per Year. This figure represents the annual increase in height you can expect over the first years. We have tried to give as accurate a figure as possible but plants are not only affected by their response to soil conditions and the weather but also vary considerably in their growth habits. Some are slow in growth for the first years after planting, then grow very rapidly. Others grow rapidly when young and then slow down and others have steady growth habits. Some plants because of their form (i.e. weeping habit) may put on a lot of growth but only increase in height relatively slowly. SUNDRIES ROOTGROW TM Rootgrow enhances a plant s root system so a newly planted plant will find more food and water, need less fertiliser, will establish faster thus reducing losses and will increase tolerance to drought and adverse soil conditions. Rootgrow contains mycorrhizal fungi which attach to the roots and grow very rapidly forming a secondary root system, extending the volume of soil explored by the plant by 700 times. This secondary root system extracts water and nutrients from the soil and exchanges them for waste carbon from the plant. 33 SUNDRIES CONTINUED TREE SHELTERS Tree shelters are ideal for helping to establish young trees. They are used extensively, especially on difficult sites, to protect trees from cold winds and browsing animals. Because of their insulating properties, they also promote faster growth. For example, you can expect up to six times more growth on an oak sapling in the first two years. They encourage good strong stems with fewer side branches and make weed control much easier. The shelters are manufactured from twin-walled polyethylene, and, though flat-packed, they quickly form a circle when erected. A round shelter offers less resistance to wind than a square shelter. Heavy duty shelters have a curved lip top to prevent abrasion of the tree. Most deciduous trees benefit from tree shelters except sweet and horse chestnut and beech but on very hostile sites even these have shown better growth with tree shelters. If a screen of netting is put on the windward side of the plant or, if practical, put right round the plant, the damage will be reduced considerably thus decreasing the risk of failure, and encouraging faster growth and establishment. The main problem is caused by the build up of orders for bare rooted plants in September and October while we are waiting for the plants to become dormant, so if you want your plants in November please order early. As far as possible we despatch orders in the sequence in which we receive them, subject always to availability of the plants. We try to avoid despatching plants when the ground is frozen. We do find that planting in autumn, January and February causes fewest problems. In March and April the plants have often started into growth and are more susceptible to adverse conditions and delays in transit. If an address is supplied we can notify the customer when the goods are despatched from the nursery. Telephone notification is not possible. ALL SIZES. As this catalogue is printed before the end of the growing season all sizes are based on anticipated growth rates. AVAILABILITY. Pot grown and cell grown plants are usually available for despatch or collection all year round. Bare rooted plants can only be despatched or collected when dormant, normally from mid-november until early April, but these dates vary with the weather and with the variety of plant. SUBSTITUTES. In the event of non-availability, we would try to substitute with smaller/younger plants, or similar varieties whenever possible. If you do not wish us to send substitutes please say so on your order. We reserve the right to send available plants and refund for out-of-stock items. BEFORE YOUR PLANTS ARRIVE. Please ensure you are ready for your plants as deliveries are made during week days when you may be unable to plant them, or the ground could be frozen or snow-covered. Plants deteriorate if left in their packing too long, so have an area of cultivated soil in a sheltered site prepared in advance. Do this by digging a trench about 50cm (20 inches) deep and cover the area with polythene to keep it dry and prevent it freezing. When the plants arrive, unwrap them and any bare rooted ones should be soaked for up to one hour in water. Bed the plants into the prepared trench and cover the roots with soil, which should be watered if dry. The plants can remain in this state until you are able to plant into their final place. Any pot grown plants should be watered if necessary then kept in a sheltered position until planted. ALL ROOTS should be soaked for at least one hour (but not longer than three hours) BEFORE planting and kept well watered during dry spells until established. Planting and pruning hints will be enclosed with each order. WARRANTY. All plants are sent out in good condition, but if you are dissatisfied on receipt of goods we shall refund your money for the cost of any goods returned if they are returned properly packed within 3 days of receipt. When plants are newly transplanted they are more susceptible to diseases and adverse conditions. A healthy plant can fail should it become dried out, be planted in unsuitable conditions, be affected by cold whilst not established, or many other like factors and we cannot accept responsibility for failures. Should any failures occur we will consider claims if sent by August with complete details and we would usually offer to replace the plants in the autumn at half-price plus normal carriage charge. This offer does not affect your statutory rights. NON-DELIVERY OR DAMAGE. For orders placed before the beginning of November, advise of non-delivery by the end of November. For orders placed between November and April, advise of non-delivery if order is not received within a month of placing order. In the event of damage to goods in transit please notify us within three days of receipt. We can accept no responsibility for loss or damage if these conditions are not met. EEC BUFFER FREE ZONES. As we are not in a Fireblight Buffer Free Zone, we are unable to supply the following species - Chaenomeles, Cotoneaster, Crataegus, Cydonia, Malus, Mespilus, Pyracantha, Pyrus, Sorbus (other than Sorbus intermedia) and Stransvaesia to the following areas: Northern Ireland, Ireland, Isle of Man and the Channel Islands.
