1 CARROT CULTIVAR TRIAL SEASONAL SUMMARY Air temperatures for most of the summer months were slightly below seasonal to seasonal. Slightly drier conditions were present in May and June with good moisture throughout the rest of the season. The air temperatures were below the long term (10 year) average for May (10.7 C), August (17.9 C), and September (14.7 C), average for July (20.4 C) and above average for June (19.2 C). Monthly rainfall was below the long term (10 year) average for May (48 mm) and June (68 mm), average for September (82 mm) and above average for July (137 mm) and August (63 mm). The carrot trial was seeded on May 22 & 23. Soil moisture levels and temperatures were fair at seeding. Air temperatures fluctuated between 15 o C - 27 C for two weeks after seeding. Two rain showers on May 30 & 31 improved soil moisture levels for germination. Germination was slightly uneven, and stand counts were a little poor. The carrot crop responded positively to the near seasonal air temperatures and the slightly above average rainfall of the summer. Late May rain showers followed by high air temperatures in early June contributed to a high weed pressure in the trial when the carrots were in the bunny ear to first true leaf stage. The high weed pressure and uneven carrot growth meant herbicides had to be carefully applied. Weed control with a pre-emergence application of Gesagard 480 gave only fair control and if irrigation water had been applied the chemical would have been better activated. Groundsel continues to be the most serious problem weed on station. In mid June, split applications of Lorox plus Assist Oil were applied in an attempt to control the weeds with moderate success. Hand weeding was necessary to clean up larger escaped weeds and was needed throughout the season to keep the trial free of weeds. Carrot weevil populations at the Muck Station were at manageable levels and below last year s numbers. Imidan was applied twice to control the weevil population and weevil damage at harvest was virtually nil. Carrot rust fly levels were low compared to previous years. First and second generation rust fly counts just reached threshold levels. The carrot rust fly second generation this year, as in the previous 4 years, was extended over a greater number of days than is typical. The carrot rust fly damage at harvest was low. /continued

2 CARROT CULTIVAR TRIAL SEASONAL SUMMARY continued Alternaria and Cercospora leaf blight appeared in early July and required a regular spray program to keep below economic thresholds during the summer months. To observe cultivar tolerance to both pathogens, regular fungicide sprays were discontinued in early September. Irrigation water was applied once at approximately 1 inch on July 16. On the Grower Field Day in late August, the majority of cultivars had a moderate number of forked and/or split carrots. No insect pest problems were noted. Some cultivars had a little damage from leaf blights. Most carrot cultivars were surprisingly smaller in size than expected considering the higher than average rainfall of the summer months. Harvest conditions in October were slightly dry and temperatures were seasonal. The average to above average rainfall of the summer months did not appear to increase disease pressure from Sclerotinia, but some pockets of disease were found in the trial. Alternaria and Cercospora disease levels were at slightly higher compared to an average year. When yield samples were taken there was a noticeable increase in forked and split carrots. Half the cultivars in the trial had seeders but at very low numbers. All cultivars appeared to have weaker tops compared to an average year. The carrots were placed in the Filacell storage immediately after harvest. At evaluation in November, the majority of the cultivars showed a lot of variability within the various quality categories. The trial as a whole had average yields. This year there was a noticeable spike in cavity spot. The degree of cavity spot was on average a Light to Light Medium sized lesion and a higher percentage of carrots were infected. Most cultivars had a smoother surface compared to last year. Very little marbling of exterior colour was found compared to the last few years. Interior colour blending was poor, with a lot of cultivars having a translucent core. Several cultivars had poor ratings for Uniformity of Shape. Green shoulders were present on a large number of carrots but in most cases was just starting to develop. Insect damage was much lower than the in last couple of years. The number of culls increased significantly compared to the 2007 season. The number of carrots found that were infected with aster yellows was almost zero.

3 CARROT CULTIVAR TRIALS MANAGEMENT PROCEDURES Fertilizer: 60 kg/ha Nitrogen (Ammonium Nitrate ) kg/ha Phosphorous (MAP ) kg/ha Potassium (Potash ) + 50 kg/ha K-Mag (0-0-20) and 3.5 kg/ha of Boron (14%) was worked into the soil. Seeded: All trials were seeded 22 & 23 May using a V-Belt seeder equipped with a 5 cm wide scatter shoe. Germination of 95 to 100%, a target of seeds per foot was desired for Cello type carrots and seeds per foot for Jumbo type carrots. All trials were seeded on beds 86 cm apart. The seeding rate was according to germination. RIDOMIL 1G was applied at 25 kg/ha in the seed furrow. Main Trial was replicated three times. Adaptation Trial was not replicated. Weed Control: Pre-emergence: 1 application: GESAGARD 480 at 5.0 L/ha on 24 May. Post-emergence: 1 application: LOROX DF at 0.5 kg/ha + ASSIST OIL at 1.0 L/ha on 17 June. 1 application: LOROX DF at 0.75 kg/ha + ASSIST OIL at 1.0 L/ha on 20 June. 1 application: LOROX DF at 1.0 kg/ha + ASSIST OIL at 1.0 L/ha on 10 July. Minor Elements: Five foliar sprays: Mag Max on 25 & 31 July (1.0L/ha), 17 July, 6 & 21 Aug (2.0 L/ha). Four foliar sprays: Calimax on 21& 31 July, 12 Aug (1.0 L/ha) & 27 Aug (2.0 L/ha). One foliar spray: Mancozin on 25 July (1.0 L/ha). One foliar spray: on 12 Aug (1.0 kg/ha). Insect and Disease Control: According to IPM recommendations. IMIDAN 50 WP was applied at 2.25 kg/ha on 1 July & 15 July. PRISTINE at kg/ha and Minor Elements on 25 July. DITHANE DG at 2.25 kg/ha + RIPCORD at 175 ml/ha and Minor Elements on 31 July. POLYRAM at 2.25 kg/ha + DIAZINON at 1.1 L/ha and Minor Elements on 6 Aug. CABRIO at 0.84 kg/ha + RIPCORD at 175 ml/ha and Minor Elements on 12 Aug. DITHANE DG at 2.5 kg/ha + DIAZINON at 1.1 L/ha and Minor Elements on 21 Aug. BRAVO at 3.0 L/ha + RIPCORD at 175 ml/ha and Minor Elements on 27 Aug. / continued

4 CARROT CULTIVAR TRIALS continued Harvest: The Main Trial and Adaptation Trial were harvested 14, 15, & 16 October. All trials were immediately placed in a temperature and humidity controlled storage (0 o C, 95 % RH) respectively. Irrigation: Irrigation water was applied once on 16 July (1 ).
