2 HARCOURT equine Harcourt Heritage In Victoria s Central Highlands, at the foot of Mount Alexander, is home to a small and spirited rural community. 80 minutes from Melbourne, 9km east of Castlemaine and about 20 minutes south of Bendigo, Harcourt blends a proud heritage with contemporary and cultured character. Hundreds of hectares of apple orchards cover the Harcourt Valley. About 40 percent of Victoria s apples are grown in Harcourt. Harcourt orchards produce crisp, attractive, tasty apples. Varieties grown in Harcourt include; Pink Lady, Royal Gala, Fuji, and Granny Smith along with Packham, William (WBC) and Beurre Bosc Pears. In addition cherries, peaches, plums and nectarines are also grown. History of the Industry The Harcourt valley has long been renowned for growing quality apples and pears. The flavour and crispness of HARCOURT APPLES is derived from the valley s sandy granitic soils, access to irrigation and its cold climate. What is Harcourt Equine Apple Cider Aged Vinegar? 2 APPLE CIDER VINEGAR is made from the juice of apples in a fermentation process involving yeast and bacteria called Acetobacter; both these micro organisms turn the natural sugars from apple juice into acetic acid. Since 5000 BC it has been a tonic and beverage, and was widely used as a wound disinfectant as recently as last century. Try it, it still works. You are probably aware of what a great natural remedy apple cider vinegar is for people, but did you know that it has just as many beneficial properties for horses? Surprisingly enough, apple cider vinegar is one of the most effective natural supplements for horses and is effective for treating a wide array of conditions. Apple cider vinegar can be used to treat urinary tract stones, hoof rot, poor frog growth, bot fly and a number of other common issues. 3 What are the Health Benefits of Harcourt Equine for Horses? The fermentation process used to create apple cider vinegar yields one particularly important compound - acetic acid. This acid generates effective balancing components in your horses regulatory system so that it is all-around healthier. Acetic acid helps balance the ph in your animal s body, which also helps treat issues with infection and inflammation. In addition to acetic acid, apple cider vinegar also contains a number of other beneficial compounds including vitamins, mineral salts, and amino acids. These nutrients, such as vitamin A and phosphorus, is what makes apple cider vinegar a key component for treating hoof rot, skin issues, and other health conditions for your horse. For insect control: When horses ingest apple cider vinegar daily in their feed it causes higher levels of thiamine (vitamin B1) to be extracted through your horse s skin. These B vitamins are a natural repellent to insects including bot flys. For digestion: The main ingredient of apple cider vinegar is acetic acid, as well as some lactic, citric and malic acids. Apple cider vinegar is very effective when combined with nutrient rich foods - as it helps your horse readily assimilate the nutrients. Apple cider vinegar works to acidify the stomach for better digestion and absorption of minerals. This can help protect your horse against harmful bacteria, parasites and water-borne diseases. Mane and tail detangler: Horse hair has a ph level of between 4.5 and 5.5. Many horse shampoos and products disrupt this ph. As already mentioned, apple cider vinegar is naturally high in acetic acid which can help bring your horse s hair closer to it s ideal acidity. It also helps break up residue which makes the hair have less friction. This results in much more manageable hair. For the laminitis prone ponies (and horses): Research has also shown that apple cider vinegar can slow the absorption of sugar into the bloodstream. The acetic acid helps block the absorption of starch, easing that after-meal spike. For ulcers: Apple cider vinegar may help horses with ulcers. To naturally treat pasture toxicity: Forage tests taken from pastures where horses have exhibited head flicking toxicity consistently show high potassium and low sodium (salt). For arthritis: Both horses and humans alike have benefited from apple cider vinegar to help control arthritis pain and stiffness. When fed daily apple cider vinegar works to remove toxins and restore ph which improves joint health. Part of the reason for apple cider vinegar s pain - relieving effects are its high acetic acid content, which can help to negate excessive acidity in the blood that can lead to inflammation and thus, pain. Feeding Apple Cider Vinegar to Horses SUGGESTED FEEDING RATES Regular dosages is essential to obtain best results. IN WATER: Recomended dosage rates for horses vary from: 1 cup (250 ml) of Harcourt Equine for every 100 litres of clean water per day. or 1/4 cup (60 ml) of Harcourt Equine for every 10 litres (bucket) of clean water per day. IN FEED: For a healthy horse, use 1/4 cup (60 ml) of Harcourt Equine on fed grain per day. Dilute the apple cider vinegar 50/50 with clean water before adding to the feed. 4

6 HARCOURT equine How to Make Harcourt Equine Apple Cider Aged Vinegar We start with whole fresh apples, grown in the Harcourt Valley and beyond. 1 The fruit is crushed to a pulp and then cold-pressed to get all the juice out. 2 The juice is open fermented with wild yeast, converting the sugars into alcohol. 3 After fermentation we add the mother, a special bacteria that converts all the alcohol into acetic acid After final testing it is bottled, ready for you to use. We store it carefully and wait for 12 Months (Minimum) until it matures into a delicious and healthy vinegar.
